According to you, Pitino is a “smarmy fellow” with “old recruiting methods that may not work.”My concern is that he’s a smarmy fellow and he’s old recruiting methods may not work because everyone has access to them now. And now he’s going against the best in the game in the Big East. Not only that, but in a ‘new world’ as this board put it. Most thought that was a positive, an opportunity to rebuild faster. But Pitino hasn’t run a big time program in this new world and it sure seems like it’s more difficult than he thought.
And I know that last part about ‘Pitino charm’ was said in a tongue in cheek fashion to say be patient. But if he is relying on the charm and good will around his name to get recruits to knock down his door, I don’t see it happening.
Like paragraphs are to me.I am in agreement with your post, however the correct English term is "couldn't care less". If you could care less then that means that you actually care. Just one of my pet peeves about the English language and "lazy English".![]()
As opposed to the crime infested NYC?Hard to understand why anyone would voluntarily choose to live in the political climate that currently exists in Florida.
Stop. See my earlier post. Thank you.As opposed to the crime infested NYC?
I get you caring about #2, but why would you care about #1? And to clarify, he signed a big contract. Not much bigger then his predecessor. Cal, for example, signed a huge contractim sure he has a plan. In fact, I think he has already accomplished the first two steps. First step he signed a huge contract (step 1), second he gutted the team, like he promised (step 2). I didn’t care for the first two steps. Plus, recruiting plan A hasn’t worked so far. So I’m wondering if Pitino plan C at 5 Mill a year is going to be better than other options, which I think is a fair but hopefully unfounded concern.
But I’m am a cynic who has been using Mahers post as therapy, with the promise I’ll be nothing but supportive when we have a team again in November. I just gotta get all my angst and bad juju out before then and hope that the flood gets open soon.
It’s not Karma it’s bad facilities and decades of a mom and pop approach. We just got our clocks cleaned here because of small time v. big time approach. This needs to be the catalyst for serious and immediate changes. When I was a kid we called it Karma.
1) You fire the coach and refuse to pay him.
2) You hire a new coach, certifiably great but also certifiably morally dubious and past his prime.
3) He begins with an arrogant press conference at which he announces he’s firing 3/4 of the team.
4) A couple of weeks later he’s recruited no-one, including his own recent players.
5) Our beloved program is mired in shit again.
Actually, we called it INSTANT karma…
For 30 million, I would have made Billy Donovan say no to a 5 yr 6 million per. Trust me I don’t want either Hurley on our sidelines they are tough to like.According to you, Pitino is a “smarmy fellow” with “old recruiting methods that may not work.”
Should the school have hired a younger smarmy fellow?
I guess SJU could have gone with a younger smarmy fellow like Danny Hurley, when he was available. Unless you believe his story that no UConn player has benefited from the NIL.
Besides, Kelvin Sampson and Bruce Pearl for example are not the youngest coaches, and they have had their share of recruiting violations doing it the “old way”. Yet they continue to win.
Great coaches do not become great coaches by accident. If you think Pitino lost something on his fastball, that’s fine.
I on the other hand think once the roster is set, and next season rolls in, we will be happy with the results.
When I was a kid I knew karma didn't exist. When I was a kid we called it Karma.

absolutely don’t care how much we pay our coach it’s not my money. I just think for the amount we are paying we could have tried for better value. When I thought we were playing in the CMA range, I thought Speedy would have been a home run hire. If the 30 million number is true, I think I would have made some other guys say no first. As some one who is a worker and not an owner, I’m all for employers getting all the $$$ they can get.I get you caring about #2, but why would you care about #1? You should see some folks on Twitter. Idiots galore. I'm sure a few of 'em inhabit this site. I'd gladly call 'em out if I knew their pseudonyms. Ain't that's right, TIS?We live in a world of instant gratification these days and it is amped up here because we have been a 2nd division team for the majority of the last 3 decades.
Here some want Pitino to build the Roman Coliseum in 3 weeks. No doubt he will get it done, so I am not quite sure why some who have had to watch 6 of the worst head coaching hires over the last 30 years can't at least wait until June 1st at the bare minimum to start throwing daggers. It is borderline laughable in my opinion.
Fair points. The actual facts as I know of it is that numerous players decided to transfer. I'm not aware of any scholarships that were not renewed. It is now Pitinos job to replace those that decided to leave. Whatever reasons were behind players transferring out, I do not know, but they entered the portal of their own free will. Good luck to them, but none of them are victims. If any of them had great interest in continuing their education at SJU and they truly were told the school would not honor or continue their scholarship, that is plain wrong. If instead they believe they can make more money somewhere else as the professional basketball players they now are - good luck to them, maybe they will.
I have no interest in trashing the former players but also could care less what happens to them from here. I wish them no ill will, same as any human being. If they prosper by deciding to transfer good for them. If they do not, it is up to them to learn from that as they have long lives ahead of them.
I don't think that is a harsh view at all. These athletes have great skill and that accords them benefits (including a salary) that they earn. We the customers pay for those benefits and receive the right to watch them perform. This is a business and that is the business transaction. None of the coaches or players care about me or my family. Why should they? That works both ways.
