Transfer Portal

Of concern though is the possibility that in the short run, Rick can’t lift St John’s image to his level, but instead is
impaired by ours. Hopefully, he can redefine St John’s not as a perennial also-ran, but rather as himself, MSG, NYC, and the Big East challenge. It just may take longer than sprinkling some Pitino charm around in his first month.

We live in a world of instant gratification these days and it is amped up here because we have been a 2nd division team for the majority of the last 3 decades.

Here some want Pitino to build the Roman Coliseum in 3 weeks. No doubt he will get it done, so I am not quite sure why some who have had to watch 6 of the worst head coaching hires over the last 30 years can't at least wait until June 1st at the bare minimum to start throwing daggers. It is borderline laughable in my opinion.

Agree 100%, let's stop the speculation and give Coach Pitino the opportunity to put together next season's team.

Having stated this, I also think it was inherently unfair to speculate on why some of last year's players are no longer here. I don't think Coach Pitino spoke with any of us and let us know why and how come he decided to overhaul the entire roster, including recruits. The derogatory comments about Posh, Wusu, Storr, Gardner, and Gardner's Mom, etc, were all pure speculation. I can't begin to think how many posters had the audacity to claim in their posts what Coach Pitino was thinking as he made his decisions. The difference between myself and some posters, is that some of y'all look at them as just players who are being discarded because they are no longer useful. I view them as young men whose lives have been disrupted and are presently in the process of trying to figure out what comes next.

Just a lil something to think about.
Agreed! This site is starting to sound like a bunch of old ladies at a Mah Jong gathering! ;)

The actual facts as I know of it is that numerous players decided to transfer. I'm not aware of any scholarships that were not renewed. It is now Pitinos job to replace those that decided to leave. Whatever reasons were behind players transferring out, I do not know, but they entered the portal of their own free will. Good luck to them, but none of them are victims. If any of them had great interest in continuing their education at SJU and they truly were told the school would not honor or continue their scholarship, that is plain wrong. If instead they believe they can make more money somewhere else as the professional basketball players they now are - good luck to them, maybe they will.

I have no interest in trashing the former players but also could care less what happens to them from here. I wish them no ill will, same as any human being. If they prosper by deciding to transfer good for them. If they do not, it is up to them to learn from that as they have long lives ahead of them.

I don't think that is a harsh view at all. These athletes have great skill and that accords them benefits (including a salary) that they earn. We the customers pay for those benefits and receive the right to watch them perform. This is a business and that is the business transaction. None of the coaches or players care about me or my family. Why should they? That works both ways.

Most of us had hoped that Rick would retain a handful of players from last season, and build around them. When that didn't happen, most of us expected that Rick would quickly start stocking the roster with new talent. So far, that hasn't happened. I'm sure that Rick is somewhat disappointed that kids haven't yet started commiting here, so it's fine for the fan base to express disappointment as well. Doesn't mean Rick has given up and it certainly doesn't mean that we've given up on him. It ok to be disappointed with where we are right now, but still have faith that we're headed in the right direction under Rick's leadership.

Hard to understand why anyone would voluntarily choose to live in the political climate that currently exists in Florida.
Dude. This is a silly take (to be kind). First off, he is from Florida.

Secondly (I am a lifelong NYer and I live in the city), life here in NYC isn’t exactly a bed of roses, with out of control crime.

This is the last comment on this, or we will be deleting posts.

Thank you for your understanding.

Yes, but their lives were disrupted by a coach who came in and said, I see 6-8 new players on this team.

He spoke to all of us when he made that statement.

It think it’s fair to expect if your the new CEO and you say I’m going to lay of 75% of the staff that they should have a plan in place to get your company back into the black. So far he’s been more Elon Musk at Twitter than Peter Cuneo at Marvel.

RSR you are implying that RP doesn't have a plan. Not only am I confident that he has a plan, I'm sure he has a Plan A, a Plan B, a Plan C and so on. Maybe Plan A didn't work out as he expected, so now he's on to Plan B. You continue to express some very valid concerns, but let's give Rick some time to implement a plan before accusing him of not having one.

My concern is that he’s a smarmy fellow and he’s old recruiting methods may not work because everyone has access to them now. And now he’s going against the best in the game in the Big East. Not only that, but in a ‘new world’ as this board put it. Most thought that was a positive, an opportunity to rebuild faster. But Pitino hasn’t run a big time program in this new world and it sure seems like it’s more difficult than he thought.

And I know that last part about ‘Pitino charm’ was said in a tongue in cheek fashion to say be patient. But if he is relying on the charm and good will around his name to get recruits to knock down his door, I don’t see it happening.

I am in agreement with your post, however the correct English term is "couldn't care less". If you could care less then that means that you actually care. Just one of my pet peeves about the English language and "lazy English". ;)

im sure he has a plan. In fact, I think he has already accomplished the first two steps. First step he signed a huge contract (step 1), second he gutted the team, like he promised (step 2). I didn’t care for the first two steps. Plus, recruiting plan A hasn’t worked so far. So I’m wondering if Pitino plan C at 5 Mill a year is going to be better than other options, which I think is a fair but hopefully unfounded concern.

But I’m am a cynic who has been using Mahers post as therapy, with the promise I’ll be nothing but supportive when we have a team again in November. I just gotta get all my angst and bad juju out before then and hope that the flood gets open soon.

Not really a transfer but also a NJ kid:

Interesting this is announced now. Looks like a playing time issue. Filipowski, one of Duke's freshmen this past year, was supposed to enter the draft but decided to come back for his sophomore year. They both kinda play that stretch 4 type role. Looks like Mgbako didn't think he'd be able to get a lot of playing time and backed out.

If playing time is something hes looking for, time for us to pick up the phone
