Transfer Portal 2022

We have things to sell.  Starting with Champ coming in as a kid every major D-I school wanted to prep and blossoming in a short period into a legitimate NBA prospect (and there aren't that many in the Big East).  I'd even argue Wheeler gives you something to sell - his game and numbers jumped significantly from his time at Purdue.  You can say that's because he played more, but by year-end he became a pretty darn good BE player and didn't look like the kid who was at Purdue.  It isn't like CMA doesn't have a history with developing kids or winning games.  He's probably coached as many or more NBA guys than some of the schools he's recruiting up against.  It is all how you sell it.  I wasn't the biggest Matt A. fan -- and certainly not the biggest fan of Mullin the coach even though he can basically do no wrong in my eyes because of how he was as a player -- but it's not long ago that Matt A. was able to sell a number of highly rated 4/5 star kids and transfers to come here.  And if I'm a player, despite my Mullin idol worship, I'd much prefer the Anderson/Macon combo than Mully and Matt A.

I love creative, pass first point guards so I shall stand in the Curbelo camp even if he doesn’t fill an obvious need.

If Curbelo is going to come here and Posh is going to play off the ball then he going to have to significantly improve his three point shooting for that to work. Defensively they eould be amazing together in CMA’s system but you have to score.

Posh becoming a better shooter will help everything, but we saw us play better with two small guards who couldn’t shoot from deep with Dunn and him. So we know it can work.
I don’t think it can work at all. If you have watched Curbelo play these past two years, tge word hit dog comes to mind. What should be a simple pass to a team mate never seemed to be at the detriment to the team. In terms of shooting, Curbelo can’t. In terms of playing together, both “need” the ball to be effective and there is only one. I see no value in bringing him on board when there is Kolby King coming in who I believe most will like, and a great need for scoring at the 3 and 4 spots. There are greater needs elsewhere, they don’t need to be 4 deep at tge PG position.

I’ll admit I’ve never seen him play, but the suggestion that we should pass on Curbelo bc we have Kolby King strikes me as absurd.

Forget concussed Curbelo and watch what he did as a freshman there. Or his senior year at LuHI. He disrupts the other team so much. Now pair that with Posh. We would be an absolute nightmare to bring the ball up against. I think their defense would create enough offense that we could mask our long distance deficiencies. We've had them in plenty of seasons anyway, so it's not like this would be a new thing for us. It would be a new thing for us to actually close out on the other team's shooters, though, and I think Curbelo would help a lot.

Aside from that, just want to refresh people's memories about Toussaint:

Finalist for 2019 Mr. Basketball in the state of New York… Cardinal Hayes HS all-time leading scorer… averaged 22.5 points, 5.3 assists, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.7 steals helping lead Cardinal Hayes High School to a 21-8 record and a berth in the 2018 Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) semifinals… helped lead Cardinal Hayes HS to its first CHSAA city championship on the “AA” level since 1990 in 2017, earning MVP honors as a sophomore.

........................

I think he's better than his stats at Iowa. And we want to make coaches at Hayes, Stepinac, and LuHi happy and keep them that way so when they produce studs like they often do, we won't get turned away at the door.

I am a big fan of CMA but if he and staff are not attacking the portal like it is do or die for him, that is on him and Cragg both.  Have to say I am running out of patience.
I think if there's one positive for CMA it's that laziness is not the issue. There have been legitimate gripes about that with the past 2 staffs but not this one. I have no doubt CMA is putting the time and effort in. The downside is he just might not be good enough to reel in the big fish needed to replace the production we're losing. That, and he's not willing to do what's needed to get those difference making players

It doesn't matter how many 2 and 3 star kids we pick up from those schools, the Cole Anthonys, AJ Griffins, RJ Davis' of the world are never even considering playing here when they have Duke, UNC and Kansas knocking on their door.

Personally, Toussaint doesn't move the needle for me.  I did like what his coaches had to say about him, but I don't anticipate he would be a high impact addition.

Found a nice video of Pinzon, Curbelo, and Traore working out last summer.

Curbelo shot looks really good in this workout, quick release, good form, a lot of confidence in it.  With him it may just be a matter of never fully recovering from the concussion during the season and losing his confidence.  A familiar scenery and comfort around former teammates may be just what the doctor ordered for him.  Him and Pinzon seem to be really close.

Looks like they are working out in Elmont, famous for being the hometown of notable studs Vinny Testaverde and LJSA.

There is a feeling that some people believe all players are made equal.

So for example, Champ leaves but Touissant say commits.  Great we have a replacement for Champagnie.  Uh no that is not how it works.

Again SJU is losing it's 1st and 3rd leading scorers, it's leading rebounder and likely it's 5th leading scorer in Mathis.  They went 8-11 in the conference with those players and did not make either NCAA or NIT and do not have a top 20 National class coming in.

They need two proven scorers who can step in and start and make a difference immediately.

Toussaint & Curbelo are each high major contributing guards. Each would help.

I’d think staff could sell the success of Wheeler this past year compared to previous production, and Champ’s career relative to recruiting ranking to a big time wing scorer. The minutes and opportunity are there.

Not remotely sold on Curbelo and fine with Toussaint as a complimentary piece. But bottom line if CMA doesn't reel in two legit scorers as in shooters, it will be at best a repeat of this year.

Be honest, have you seen anyone make this ridiculous claim?

Curbelo and Posh would be the 2 best players on our team. You don’t pass up on a borderline all American when healthy. Sorry.

regarding why would talent come here? Bc they could start at the 2 or 3 in the big East at MSG. That’s the selling point. Always been

why would someone who is talented but maybe didn’t play as much or have as much success at their last school come here? Look at Wheeler Julian and Soriano? Improved immensely under Anderson.

believe it or not in this world but Coach selling the family on how he runs his program and mentors kids works in some cases.

people are rightfully pissed (me included) after the season but Im not letting Zach stoke the fire bc he’s not getting the info from the team he has in thr past

The staff knows what they need. They’re doing what they can to get it.

Besides players, my kids, 96 year young mom and I love
King Umberto which is a great Elmont Italian place to dine!

I am in on Curbelo. If for no other reason, we do not have to hear about all the new players needing time to adapt to Anderson’s system.

What they need to start getting are the Kyle Cuffe Jrs. of the world who is now being recruited over by Kansas.

Schools that have reached out to Mizzou transfer @durugordon :

Seton Hall, Ok state, UCF, South Florida, Tulsa, Arkansas and WVU.

how do you know they aren't and we just havent heard about it- those kids haven't released a statement yet? Honestly asking- still unclear here how many posters have inside info - lol have you heard they are on vacation or something? lol
Don't run out of patience.  The NCAA's are not over yet.  As noted there are now over 1,000 in the portal; how many have "committed".  It may be that things will start to pop after the Final Four.  I am thankful Wheeler was prompt to reveal that he was leaving as this could swing a "recruit's" decision as there is now more playing time which is probably a prime mover for these desires to transfer.  I am as anxious as others to know but kick back with some Guinness and enjoy that.  Let's give CMA and staff the time they need to sell the program; I can't imagine they are on their Lazy Boy chairs but are out beating the bushes.

Good advice BR. I think I was suffering from temporary Wheeler separation psychosis yesterday. I agree way too early to draw conclusions on SJU's success restocking. Hopefully two weeks from now things will look a lot brighter.

If Curbelo comes and does not start strong, I assure you that you'll not only  hear that  excuse, but you'll hear a slew of others as well.

KU would be even better if they had parking. Car dodging a popular sport for restaurant customers.

While I have always understood that the constant negative posters are tiring and usually not entertaining, I am starting to question the sanity of the All is well posters after all these years.
