I am leaning minimum 38%

Then unless you're dealing with an NBA prospect (and there will likely be no NBA prospects in the transfer portal), you're going to be getting a player with a hole (or several) in his game.

To put it in SJU transfer perspective: For every Reggie Carter out there, there are 20 John Hempels.

Guys who can shoot, but can't create their own shot. (see Sergio Luyk)
Guys who can shoot, but have no foot speed to defend. (See Max Hooper)
Guys who can shoot, but can't handle the ball. (See Larry Wright, Avery Paterson or Tareq Coburn)
Or guys who can shoot well at a lower level, but can't up here (See Stef Smith, Vince Cole, John Hempel)

this! this is a good take. This is why i asked my question- for all those that want a shooter.... what's your definition of a shooter?

A great percentage at a lower level- might not translate with better defense the BE level. Wheeler.... who never averaged more than 5 pts at Purdue and shot under 30% from 3.... ended up being what i thought was our most reliable option from long range at season end.

Will be interesting to see what the staff finds.

Like a wise (or maybe unwise, I don't know) man once said, I don't know that I can define what it is but I'll know it when I see it.

Great Shooter= JJ Redick

I know it when I see it

The phrase "I know it when I see it" is a colloquial expression by which a speaker attempts to categorize an observable fact or event, although the category is subjective or lacks clearly defined parameters. The phrase was used in 1964 by United States Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart to describe his threshold test for obscenity in … In explaining why the material at issue in the case was not obscene …could not be censored, Stewart wrote…I know it when I see it…

all the best

Larry Wright was great
Norm refused to play him

Seems like a reasonable get.

Curbelo contacted per Goodie:

Gonzaga, SJU, G-Tech, Pitt, Kansas St, St. Mary's, Clemson and Texas A&M.

Heard from someone today that he is likely to take a SJU visit soon.

Who needs other transfers when we can rollout our LUHI-OSL starting lineup.

While our facilities certainly don't compare to the Illini's, hopefully his relationship with Pinzon is strong enough to have him seriously consider us.

With all this pg chatter I hope all is good on the Posh front.  Paultz, we good here?

We have a lot of needs heading into 2022-23 but I think we need one thing more than anything else - SHOOTERS!!!!!! We don't have a single person on our roster who is a reliable outside shooter.

Another big issue is roster continuity. Last year, we had to incorporate 9 new guys into CMA's system. We all saw how that worked out. If everyone still on the roster comes back (and that's not a certainty), we will have 6 or 7 scholarship players who have never played a minute in a St John's uniform. That is a major area of concern IMO.

We still have 3 schollies open for next year. Our staff needs to make prudent use of the transfer portal to bring in some guys who can shoot the ball and blend into the system. Here's hoping they can make that happen.

Exactly.  Bringing in any guard who cant shoot is complete insanity.  If hes a C+ or B- defender, thats fine.  We cant keep doing the same thing over and over.  We know what those results are.
The problem this year wasn't shooting.  The biggest problem I seen was missed free throws and late game stops on the defensive end.  I can think of 4 games off the top of my head that was lost by simply shooting under 60% from the free throw line.  That's never acceptable.  If you're going to be a good basketball team and expect to win close games in a high major conference you can't shoot 67% from the free throw line as a team.

For example at Arkansas, JD Notae, shot 29% from 3 point and attempted 249 threes.  In comparison Julian who is a high volume 3 point shooter attempted 193.  Arkansas as a team 30% from 3, without a single player shooting over 39%.  And this Arkansas team went to the elite 8.  And how does that happen with a team that shoots so poorly?  They got to the free throw line ALOT and shot 75% from the free throw line as a team.  There wasn't a single guy in the rotation that shot below 70% from the line.

So, when I'm looking at the transfers this year.  I'm looking at how good they were defensively, how good they are at attacking the rim on offense, and if they shoot at least 70% from the free throw line.  I don't care if they shoot 1% from the 3.  3 pointers is fool's gold, Georgetown was a decent 3 point shooting team and didn't win a single conference game. Every team is going to be hot and cold from the 3 point line.  Being good defensively and making free throws is something a team can do well every single game.
Agree. The 3 keys for Nova and their ilk….they make offenses uncomfortable, their offensive movement tests your will and discipline on defense and they hit FTs….St Petes, operating with less talent than many, did the same things and it is why they beat teams that they might never beat again

Staff knows we need somebody who can run the show. Pinzon isn’t there yet. And

Posh isn’t a pg. He wants no part of the late game management. Posh is a good cutter that can slip behind defense, an above avg off rebounder, and he will thrive in an off ball role with a guy like Belo.

Him, and a couple of long wings th at can space the floor.

I just can’t see them both on the floor together for long stretches and I can’t imagine either being happy not dominating the ball.

Here is what I will say about Curbelo.  When he is right, which he clearly was not most of this past year, he is a legit stud guard.  Remember he was a pre-season first team All-B10.

Having said that not sure where the fit is here even if he is 100%.  Because he is not coming here to sit and come off the bench.  Can either him or Posh play off the ball?

And still need another proven scorer to step in and play a wing/forward position.

No worries, from what I've read Posh is moving over to the 4.
