Transfer Portal 2022

I take it back with regards to the Horizon League, austour is right.  I was thinking of a Mid American.

But by all accounts a terrific player and a finalist for the Lou Henson award (best mid major player).

You have to feel bad for some of these schools, they groom these kids and they even have success with them and then they bolt.

Look how many players on that list are in the Portal.

Those midwest mid-major conferences all look the same.  ;)

Holden was a 6-6 guard/forward who averaged 20 pts/7.1 reb and shot almost 50% (49.7).

And the Horizon League is a good league.  Not Power 6 but much higher then America East or MAAC.  Much higher.

As a 6’6 freshmen taking 7 shots a game he was 61% from the field! That’s almost more impressive than his numbers last year.

Yes but of course each year as his shot attempts go up his shooting percentages go down.  He's not a 3pt shooter.  Never averaged even 2 attempts per game.

One recurring thing about a lot of these mid major transfers is they're taking 15-20 shots per game (holden was just short of 14 on a more balanced team), At the lower levels some are close to 40-50% of their teams attempts.  They're not going to do that at the next level so you can't build expectations based on their gross production.  That's why I was hopeful for Tareq last year. YHe was scoring 15 on just 10 shots per game at Hofstra.  That's the kind of efficiency I look for, otherwise you try and get those 40%+ 3pt guys that USGuard wants.

PS Horizon ranked well below MAAC and below America East in RPI and NET, and also below MAAC in Sagarin.  Let's just say it ain't all that.

It is extremely impressive to shoot 60%+ from the field if your a 6’6 wing. Regardless of level and especially for a freshmen. It shows he has a feel for finishing and he played his role as a freshmen. 50% on 20 points a game with good rebounding and assist #s is just as impressive and far and away exceeds anything any of our transfers accomplished. I too was excited by Coburns efficiency, but that wasn’t as a primary option. And I know you’re not implying he’d be a bad get, I’m just saying those are some incredible #s.

Yeah, but at this point that 60% ancient history.  And of course he'll also be playing against better competition and defense then he did even as a frosh, and I'm not talking MAC level competition either.

Re assists, I'm not processing this stuff like STJ is looking for a starting PG, I hope they are looking for scoring wings with range.  And I will tell you, that while there are a lot of volume shooting scoring wings passing through this thread, few have exhibited the kind of range at the lower level that would make them high priority for me.  I am sure Holden's size/wingspan intrigues CMA's defensive sensibilities though.

I have no doubt Holden could be a good role player at a high major level.  Team is already filled with role players.  I guess that's where I'm at.

We're losing our two best (actually three best) shooters now. Need to get some scorers. Imho, we need at least two, maybe three difference maker level guys (i.e. can score and play significant minutes) not role players from the portal now if we want to have a good chance to dance.

Don't really see how Toussaint fits here. Always good to have extra ballhandlers but would assume he'd be looking for an increase in minutes and him and Posh on the floor together would be brutal for the half court offense.

I understand it with Curbelo because if he returns to form he's a borderline All American but Toussaint doesn't have that ceiling. Would assume there's no chance both Curbelo and Toussaint are brought in so staff pursuing Toussaint may mean Curbelo isn't a realistic option but who knows.

Bet he’s the one we get. He’s better than those numbers.  Hits free throws. Plays D. Tough. Seems like he’s what MA wants. Don’t think it’s what we need.

Easy to get nervous about our position which could be better.  That said, I would guess Van Macon has a few irons in the fire.   The back channeling works both ways and I am sure Van, particularly, has been engaged in those types of conversations throughout the season.  I am also sure Wheeler's decision was not a shock the the staff.  Van will do the heavy lifting, but you never know, Shoes or TJ could hit on something.

Personally, I am going to try to ride this out and evaluate the roster when it is a finished product.
.

Again was never a huge retention guy to begin with for 2 big reasons:

1) Not realistic in this day to expect everyone back. Even on good teams there is attrition and I don't blame Coach for it and..

2) This team was not that good and needed upgrades in talent if they are to move up.  They have 1 difference maker coming back, Posh, everyone else was either likely gone like Champ and Wheeler or quite frankly replaceable.

Assume Posh comes back they need to roll a 7 in the Portal Market. They need 2 guys who can step in and start on day one.  Maybe 1 or 2 others as solid rotation guys.

We need two home runs, not singles to compete next year, perhaps triples :)

I agree with you.

But if this is the case (and it’s very likely we don’t get any difference makers) why are we bringing Anderson back for a 4th year?

Mind numbingly dumb.

I'm hoping that Posh does not view this as the cabinet is becoming emptier, and he decides this is not for him any longer.

Because he deserves the opportunity to try to accomplish that.  It won't be easy but the Portal is Portaling and there are a lot of really good players that will be available.

He needs to roll 7s no doubt, but let's see if he can do it.
