This place is funny. People still are mad at Fran for doing half of what Rice did but now for reasons that totally escape me Rice is being thought of as some kind of cure all so all is forgiven and forgotten. Look I don't care if they hire him but they won't. Just think it is pretty funny that people are getting all worked up because school won't hire someone no one is hiring.
Hey hire Fran he was a good coach and good recruiter. In fact put me down for that!
When UConn or some other rival picks him up, just remember the fans who begged for him to come. He is a good recruiter and his players love him. He also happens to be in NJ which is one of the most fertile recruiting grounds in the country right now. It makes too much sense. People do stupid things, you have to give them a chance to live it down. Obviously if the players are not afraid of him and speak highly of him he has changed for the better. He didn't kill anyone, he threw basketballs at players and cursed them out. Stupid, yes but unforgivable? Far from it.
Seriously doubt Danny Hurley will add him to his staff.
As far as I'm concerned, Rice is on his best behavior because he was a lunatic who destroyed his career by being a violent madman to his players. Just about any one of them would have kicked his ass all over the gym if they didn't know that he was holding their futures in his hands. Any coach, at any level, who would do that to kids deserves never to be around them again.
There is a lunatic who coached at St. John the Baptist HS in West Islip, Ted Oberg. I was around him for 2 seasons. He is certifiably crazy, and when he would snap would bellow at refs till he got tossed, and at 6'7 or so was a bully and an imposing figure. He also poached girls from public schools and eventually won some state federation titles. He knows basketball for certain, but as long as he is coaching is a powder keg. He eventually got fired for an incident where he stormed onto the court after receiving a technical and made contact with a referee. The school had enough and he was fired. When he is calm, he is normal,
With Rice it wasn't that he lost his temper once, and that was it. He had a pattern of doing this, not in public like the crazy Oberg, but in the confines of private practices. So he knew enough to control himself in games. Now trying to rebuild his rep, he controls himself in the lower pressure AAU circuit.
You want a qualified assistant, advocate for one. Rice should not be the guy. There are others to choose from, and if he is on the scrap heap it's his own doing.
My daughter was on Oberg’s last team at St. John the Baptist.
