So an assistant to the assistant....Dwight Shcrute?
Too late. He took the Georgia job.

Paultzman gets a +1 in the Karma department for the most optimistic topic of the week. If we get both a surprise transfer Big and a new staff member I'm good until October. Unfortunately I'm not optimistic that will happen.

Rumor is this could happen with one minor change, as well as infusion of college experience, but apparently not Rice. We’ll see.
Minor change, Matic and Richmond switch roles. Matic does have experience as an assistant coach and in recruiting for 2 or 3 years before coming here. Would give us someone else with experience recruiting who could hit the road. Using "infusion" the way you did though could involve bringing someone else in and moving Richmond back to the advisor role.
"Minor"? As RedmenNorth would say "plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose".
C’est la vie.

Let's hope if we get a staff change it isn't the secretary to the intern of the assistant to the assistant coach. Still have no clue why we can't bring Rice on board. We'd instantly be in play for the two 5 star recruits as well and he seems to build great relationships in the hotbed of NJ hoops. Can't compare him to the Tiny situation because he's a solid coach in his own right and he wouldn't be here just to get a major recruit.

wrong thread but apparently Trey McGowens is selecting his school today and we are in the Final 5. Haven't seen his name in a while so I assume we are firmly in the Friend Zone on this one. Pitt and Clemson apparently in the lead.

Either one, but guessing Pitt

Yeah I mean Mike Rice has clearly been beating away offers with a stick the last 5 years or whatever since he got fired for acting like an ass.

This place is funny. People still are mad at Fran for doing half of what Rice did but now for reasons that totally escape me Rice is being thought of as some kind of cure all so all is forgiven and forgotten. Look I don't care if they hire him but they won't. Just think it is pretty funny that people are getting all worked up because school won't hire someone no one is hiring.
Hey hire Fran he was a good coach and good recruiter. In fact put me down for that!

When UConn or some other rival picks him up, just remember the fans who begged for him to come. He is a good recruiter and his players love him. He also happens to be in NJ which is one of the most fertile recruiting grounds in the country right now. It makes too much sense. People do stupid things, you have to give them a chance to live it down. Obviously if the players are not afraid of him and speak highly of him he has changed for the better. He didn't kill anyone, he threw basketballs at players and cursed them out. Stupid, yes but unforgivable? Far from it.

Possible reasons why Mike Rice might not wind up at St. John's in no particular order:

1. The Head Coach, who usually is the one who picks his staff, doesn't want to make changes to it and will roll with what he has.

2. The Head Coach, might want to make changes to his staff and will, but those changes won't include Rice as the Head Coach doesn't want to bring him on board for his own reasons.

3.The Head Coach would like to make changes to his staff but the St. John's Administration will not let him bring in Rice because of Rice's history at RU.

4. Rice would like to get back into college coaching, but not here.

While I said in no particular order, I believe No. 4 is the least likely reason.

Fran, good recruiter, yes.

Good coach, not so much.

And what exactly makes Rice a good coach? His Rutgers stint?

Not my point. My point is if he is such a no brainer then how come no one has hired him? Listen if it guaranteed we would make the tourney I would be ok with Son of Sam, Mike Jarvis, Mike Rice or Hillary Clinton being hired. Realistically St John's is not going to sign up for the first stop on the Mike Rice redemption tour. They are just not. And since no one else has hired him you can't kill the school for it. Some of you just get your head stuck on something that honestly isn't even that important and just wont let it go.
If you want to obsess on something obsess about Ponds coming back because that is what everyone SHOULD be worrying about!

Seems to me, it's irrefutable that we need a solid AC with college hoops experience who is a good recruiter and ideally adept at developing big guys.
Whether that's Rice or not, I don't know, but I do know we need 'him'.

Def another recruiter BUT by all accounts Matt does not play well with others so how will that work out?

It’s probably because Fran did it here as opposed to another school. And secondly because when Fran went to NEw Mexico there was rumours that he was a lunatic there as well as opposed to Rice who had to sit out and learn from his mistake.

Dunno, but thinking and hoping it was that Slice doesn't play well with 'others' when he thought he'd be 'the guy' at SJU and Matt was stealing his thunder?
That's a guess from reading pieces back when their 'war' was roiling the Staff.
Regardless, at this point, let's hope Matt can co-exist with a solid and professional AC.

Coaching staff like any other staff have to work as a team. The ability to play well with others is essential skill for any team member. I have no reason to think Matt doesn't play well with others; if it were true, would be troublesome to his long-term viability.

Couple of things with regards to Rice:

1)Is Rice is qualified to be an assistant? Yes his 3 years at RU were not sparkling but no one's 3years at RU are good LOL! I mean is Pikiel not qualified to be an assistant if he is fired today by RU, of course he is. You don't hold the same standard for an assistant that you do a HC hiring. Not even close. Rice was an assistant at St. Joe's, Pitt under Jamie Dixon and then a successful stint as a HC at Robert Morris in addition to his 3 years at RU as a high major coach. Chances are if there was no "incident" at RU he would have been picked up by now. That is not to excuse his behavior just to suggest his qualifications to be an assistant are pretty good.

2)But Rice is NOT the only qualified assistant available. Especially in the off season when you have coaching dismissals staff members become available. And many are very good and talented. Don't dismiss them simply because they were on staffs that were not ultimately successful. See Mike Dunlap and Kenny Payne circa 2010 at Oregon. See Dwayne Killings UCONN 2018, just hired by WOJO at Marquette.

3)Matt was on board last year with Rice so I don't see Matt being an issue getting a top recrutiing/coaching assistant. In fact I think he would welcome the help.

4)All moot . Rice is not coming to SJU assuming there is an opening. You can say that is a good thing, you can say that is a bad thing. But move on. There are other fish in the sea.
