St. John's/Rutgers Game Thread

Just back from game...Very frustrating as this was an infintely winnable game...

I thought the team was very lackadaisical...I did not see consistent energy...almost liked they had booked this game in the "W" column before it started...coasting back on defense is an all too common occurence...

I just don't understand what Lavin is doing with Branch. I will take his turnovers along with the energy and offensive opportunities he creates (as well as his ability to get to the basket) over PG who is killing any offense we have ...hopefully there is a legitimate reason for his lack of PT...

And of course, free throws, missed layups, and poor shot selection...

Ugh...forget it and move on to Saturday...Serenity Now!!!

Well, tonight feels like a good night for venting..
Good point '72... it's worth pointing out the most obvious weakness on this team that pretty much never gets spoken of on the boards: we are an awful shooting team outside of D'angelo.

Jakarr and Chris threw up airballs from 12ft away tonight. And I'm pretty sure that Dom has been told never to take a jump shot again.. either that or he has lost all confidence. Either way that's a sad state of affairs for a player who was ranked in the top25 of his class by some people coming out of HS.

Again - it's never as bad as it appears after a loss, and this is admittedly mostly just venting, but '72 isn't lying with those percentages. We can't shoot.
And we shouldn't act like that doesn't have any effect on our ball movement. it does. we can't spread anybody out. who on this team do you have to guard close besides D'lo?

That is the thing. Lavin needs to see that and start taking adavantage of Marco's shooting abilities. Also Jamal can take people off the dribble. Jakarr has that mid range. All we need is a post scorer and getting Sanchez would makes us much better

all the more reason we need our one and only PG in the game -- who at least gives us the opportunity to get some easy shots...unfathomable why he isn't playing more...

1. Yes anything can happen. That doesn't mean us beating the other big boys is likely though. There are still odds for and against.
2. I'm looking ahead because this year is almost lost, and D'Lo likely plays his last year next year. If we can't get it together with a player of his caliber here, we wasted his time here at SJ.
3. How you can still be optimistic after being 9-6 good for 1 spot above the basement....and that's before we even play ND and G'Town which we have a chance against but a slim one. That would put us at 9-8 and 1-4 and all but cement us as among the worst Big East teams and the most underachieving school in America when you take into account the talent.

It's not wrong to have expectations, but this season really does seem like 1 big coin flip for each game.

Harrison is a great player but it seems like he's running the team not the coach. he consistently takes shots that should earn him a seat on the bench. But I dont care anymore I'm done with this team.

Tux1, should we hold a wake for you?

Yes. in Lieu of another OLBS Sacred Heart CYO halftime game we can hold a wake at halftime.

Is the knit cap included in the wake? Just move down here with us old timers. We got Northwood and FAU so you can remember the old Big East.

I've read this board for a while and have just started to post- I like reading anything about St. John's. I understand people's frustration with the team cause i want to see us win too....but a lot of you have a false sense of who this team is. Do we have talented players? yes. Is Mullin/Sealy/Jackson/Artest/Thorton/Glover walking out on that floor...? hell no. St Johns has had one decent season since we won the Big East title in 2000, and that was the yr after our best player-Artest-left....a lot of your responses seem like we should be near the top of the conf with an unblemished record.

Guys we havent been good in a long time...that run in 2011 was a team of veterans that finally got "IT." I know a lot of you are tired of hearing the whole "youngest team in America" line, but guess what...Its true! We have been competitive in every single game this year- and in the 3 Big East games at the end of regulation- there has been a spread of 3 pts! Frankly I'm impressed. It be one thing if we went out there and it was evident we werent trying, but these kids are hustling! Cant even count last years recruiting class as "ranked"- 3 players werent eligible and 1 left (garrett ended up coming mid year, which allowed us to sub one player.) This year Jakarr and Chris seem to be having the most impact, but we are not bringing in 5-star studs, nor do i expect us to. We are playing well for what we have (missing the 15th pick of the NBA draft doesnt help either)

Was I dissappointed Harrison pulled up for down 2 and didnt drive when we were getting EVERY call towards the end- Yes. Am i surprised- No. Would I have liked to have seen jakarr(6'9 athletic as hell) take it all the way down 2 with 6 seconds left after that missed free throw instead of panicking and throwing up a prayer- Yes. am i surprised- No. this is a young team that is going to make mistakes. If these were Jrs and Srs making the same decisions, ya, the season would look bleak- but we have another couple years outta these guys. Even Anthony Davis and MKG had some veteran guidance/help.

I'm excited to see what this team can do this year and look forward to watching the potential blossom. As long as we play hard and tough- ill enjoy watching this team. For those of you who pronounce this season as "dead" or vow that you wont post and watch anymore...good- it makes room for new people like me on this board.

Nice post Brian. Good reality check. I think a lot of us wear our hearts on our sleeves, and take to the boards to vent after a bad losses. Inside though, most of us know that what you say is true..they are quite young (even tho we may not want to hear it) and have quite a bit of potential. Plus, they're fun to watch.

But - that doesn't mean there might not be some fundamental changes necessary (a change in point guards for example?)

The good news is not for this year unless you enjoy excitement irrespective of outcome.
This is really an exciting team to me. I hate the losing too, but I continue to see progress.
We are now rebounding, the rotation is more limited and defensively we are playing the zone better.
Add foul shots, some consistency from Sampson, more use of our only point guard and we will be NIT capable this year, irrespective of Getting the invite.
With another big, we are NCAA next year For sure in my mind. Thats not just hope, that's a prediction I'd back with even money, assuming we get a big and Harrison stays.

Where have I heard this song before? Oh, right. Every year. Just wait til next year! Just wait! Next year this team will be great. I swear next year we will turn the corner! Ehh, the year after next I promise we will be good!

Don't get me wrong, I think if we get Lawrence and D'Lo stays next yr, anything less than the NCAA's are a total bust and we will have a good mix. But until it actually happens, it won't happen. No more if, no more maybe, no more could. This team next year will either do or not do. At some point the conversation turns from "maybe next year" to "wow SJ is terrible". We are very close to the

I wish some of our fans would stop looking down on other programs as if we are in some other elite upper echelon. Calling other teams "conference dunces" when we are the ones who are at the bottom of the standings is kind of crazy.

Reality has to start setting in.

AMEN...probably the best post I've read.

i guess sometimes have d'angelo harrison's personality once a while on this board. :)

You can be optimistic because every game is winnable. Every single one. Don't give me odds or that crap every game can be won. I din't even lose hope last year until the end of the Pitt game. It is the way I am. To me being a fan is sticking with them through the entire thing. Not just throwing my arms up in beginning of January and saying "well that'll do it for this season." That isn't me. And that is not what being a fan is all about IMO. Why not be optimistic? Sure we could be 1-4 by mid next week. We could be 4-4 two weeks later because we get a rematch with Rutgers and play Depaul twice. So far every team we've played in BE play, we have shown we capable of beating, that is something to be optimistic about

Well done.
We were picked to finish last this year.
What's wrong with people here?
This team has improved quite a bit in just a few days, defensively and rebounding.
Next year will be the year, top 20 team.

how do you KNOW we'll be a top 20 team next year. harrison and sampson could go pro...garret could pursue his baseball career in earnest. i'd like to think we'll be top 20, and we may. if we don't bring in or play people who can hit free throws, we're not going anywhere.

other than harrison and sampson, this is the softest johnny team i've seen in 50 years.

Couldn't agree more, TIS, but last night's loss was maddening just the same.

Wow how old are you?

They make their free throws and most of us are way happier this morning. That's how it goes sometimes.

I was extremely frustrated last night, as you just can't lose to Rutgers at home. Not acceptable, but what can you do?

Time to move on to Saturday. I will be there hoping for an enjoyable win.
