St. John's/Rutgers Game Thread

This team makes the same mistakes as they did early in the season.. terrible fundamentals , schoolyard free throw
percentages and poor shot selection..

Not playing Branch, who looked awful, suggests Lavin has little confidence in him. So Steve better put a PG, on his recruiting list. I 'd like to see a traditional home grown NYC Pg in the lineup next year..

Branch looked awful? I can only recall one play where he actually looked awful. Otherwise, he was the lighting matcH

Who was playing PG at Crunch time down the stretch? I saw Branch being a cheerleader on the sidelines? And, i saw no lightning on the court at all . I only saw the 2nd half but, he wasn't a factor in a 2 pt homecourt game.

This is all you need to know:
Green - 0 assists
Branch - 3 assists *** in 8 minutes

Optimism is actually hope in my eyes. Hope and belief

Thats forbidden for St Johns fans

Well it shouldn't be. We have improved vastly and have an NBA player in our starting lineup. That is why I am optimistic, and believe when can still make some noise.

I'm with you, its some kind of twisted humor reading these boards after losses though

Which NBA player is in our starting lineup?

I see a Euro player, a D-Leaguer and a summer camp invite.

Hopefully guys here can stop looking 5 games ahead on the schedule.

bingo. not sure how anyone could predict more than a game in advance. every game is gonna be a challenge

If you guys think it's funny, get your head checked. We are 9-6 and have the 2nd to last WORST record in the conference overall only to Providence who played Cuse today...this is with 6 top 100's, a likely Big East ROY, the top Big East scorer, and the best shot blocker in the nation. Soon, we will take their spot in the basement because we cannot win against our conference dunces. The only way to offset such a disgusting loss like this is to go win the next 2 vs. G'Town and ND, and that very likely will not happen. We will be a .500 team (includes all the early cupcakes) within a few weeks. Next year is our only hope. D'Lo's last year likely and if we really don't make the tourney then, we are just a crap team. If we aren't much better next year then I can't wait to get rid of all the guys from the 2011 class i.e. Pointer, Garrett, Greene, etc. We might be the lowest performing team in the nation in terms of our talent level. 9-6 what a joke. Go out and beat the big boys now or else the season ends early and all prayers are on a miracle Big East Tourney win.

Obekpa missed free throws hurt. One reckless turnover by branch really put him in the dog house. We didn't come out strong to start the 2nd half. Despite D Lo's misses down the stretch, there is no one else I wanted on the line. Jakarr played well, last play he should have kept his head up for options... I'm bummed

We can't beat cupcakes? So everybody listen up, Joe3 says that we are gonna lose to Depual twice, Seton Hall, and Providence because we can't beat cupcakes. Unreal a dude who last night posted that anything can happen is now jumping of the ledge because we lost to Rutgers. Oh yea and he also said 30 mins ago that he's tired of people saying "wait till next year" and now he goes ahead looks to 3 years from now

wow what a disgusting post.
If not winning much the rest of the season gets rid of you. It might be worth it.

And I wish I could really mean that.

This would be a tough loss if getting to the dance was on the line. When you go down to the wire with Villanova and Rutgers, with one a home game, then you get a good gauge for where the team stands. Which will be watching March madness on TV.

Too much a one man show on offense. The refs blew the whistle an awful lot for us, and still we come up short. Every team that plays us seems to be better coached in the sense that they have a plan, and follow it. For Rutgers, ball fake, dribble penetration, dish, and go up strong. For other teams, it's take Harrison out of the game. For us, it's give Harrison the ball and hope the ref blows the whistle. A lot. And that is still our best game plan. If Harrison gets the flu, we will be lucky to score on a safety.

i am an optimist but since st. john's lost some questionable games in their non conference schedule, there is very little margin for error.

Spot on. At what point is it okay to keep losing in a season? This will be another season of lesson's learned. The obvious key will be Harrison and Sampson coming back. If they leave we will be set back another 3 years, mark my words.

I don't know where you came from, but I know you weren't on this board 7-8 years ago when a Frosh Anthony Mason and Showtime Hill were the only positive things about this team. Now THAT was bad. Or 2003 when we had walk-on Andre Stanley in the starting lineup by the end of the year. To cast off the list of guys you noted is despicable. Fine, be upset. Don't be irrational.

Separately, I believe the issue this year is the loss of Dunlap. We have phenoms who are great in transition (e.g. D'Lo's no look pass to Sampson that put us up 18-17.), but we are unproductive and simple in our half court sets. That's coaching and can improve relatively quickly. Have the faith for crying out loud.

I wish some of our fans would stop looking down on other programs as if we are in some other elite upper echelon. Calling other teams "conference dunces" when we are the ones who are at the bottom of the standings is kind of crazy.

Reality has to start setting in.

Sorry. Obekpa is 5-21 from the line this year. What did you expect? He needs to get better from there, but he'll never be Reggie Miller from there. You know what you're gonna get with him.

The guy to kill from the FT line tonight is D'angelo Harrison. His percentage has been going down steadily for over a month now. I think he missed 4 tonight. Can't have that. Quite frankly, he needs to be around 90% for us to have a chance.

The other guys, the Pointer's , the Garrett's, the Greene's, the Sampson's, are all upper 50s/lower 60s percentage shooters, and quite frankly, since they've been that there entire career's here, don't expect it to change. With work, they can up that a little bit, but only so much. I don't believe a 55% foul shooter can become 80%. He could probably get to 65% or so, maybe 70%.

Harrison needs to get back to showing his early season form for the free throws to change.

Exactly, that is what is wrong. joe3 looks at teams as if we are Cuse. We aren't just gonna beat these teams. It is tough for us we aren't a top tier team.

Im done with this team. Fold the program, get rid of sports altogether, I just dont care anymore. Nobody goes to these games and Im tired of shleping home on the railroad after another miserable loss after drinking watered down piss water disguised as Bud Light for $10 a bottle. There is no joy in rooting for this team, just pain agony and aggravation. They finally broke me down tonight. Northshore, Ohiofan and all you others that dont go anymore I'm coming to join ya. I wish the team well but I'm done. Ray John dont call me about Big East tourny tix sell my GTown tix and all the rest of them. I AM DONE.

It doesnt matter, we'll do whatever it takes to lose

1. Yes anything can happen. That doesn't mean us beating the other big boys is likely though. There are still odds for and against.
2. I'm looking ahead because this year is almost lost, and D'Lo likely plays his last year next year. If we can't get it together with a player of his caliber here, we wasted his time here at SJ.
3. How you can still be optimistic after being 9-6 good for 1 spot above the basement....and that's before we even play ND and G'Town which we have a chance against but a slim one. That would put us at 9-8 and 1-4 and all but cement us as among the worst Big East teams and the most underachieving school in America when you take into account the talent.

It's not wrong to have expectations, but this season really does seem like 1 big coin flip for each game.

Harrison is a great player but it seems like he's running the team not the coach. he consistently takes shots that should earn him a seat on the bench. But I dont care anymore I'm done with this team.
