St. John's/Rutgers Game Thread

The good news is not for this year unless you enjoy excitement irrespective of outcome.
This is really an exciting team to me. I hate the losing too, but I continue to see progress.
We are now rebounding, the rotation is more limited and defensively we are playing the zone better.
Add foul shots, some consistency from Sampson, more use of our only point guard and we will be NIT capable this year, irrespective of Getting the invite.
With another big, we are NCAA next year For sure in my mind. Thats not just hope, that's a prediction I'd back with even money, assuming we get a big and Harrison stays.

I'm just surprised we went to the three both times
Harrison could have gotten a lot closer when we needed two to win
And Sampson never looked to see if there were any options beyond himself once he had the rebound
But we lost it not on those plays, we lost it many times from the foul line....all game long

i can understand sampson panicking but harrisons 3 was stupid

This isn't on Harrison's 3 or Sampson's 3. This is 100% FAILURE of free throw shooting. 100%. Most teams that go to the line that many times and are in the bonus in the last 3 minutes will win these games 95% of the time. We neutralized their fouling by not making the shots. We helped them stay in it. I swear to god every time there is a GOLDEN opportunity knocking, we revert to same old St. John's bottom feeder. Is it so much to ask to string a few wins together especially after a huge win with momentum? We always seem to disappoint, then win a big game, then have a trap game after that where we can really get over the big hump and be considered a real threat which we lose. St. John's in close games is like Mark Sanchez with the football on 3rd and 20...it ain't gunna happen. I haven't checked but I believe that's like 4-5 games now we took it right down to the wire only to lose. Against worse competition too. If we don't take out G'Town or ND the season goes downhill fast.

Unlike everybody else, I'm going to stay optimistic, mostly because I think we can beat Georgetown. It is getting to the point where I might have to stop reading this board, because you guys act like our season is over in January. I wanna cheer on until the season ends and some of you make it very hard. everyone take a deep breath and realize we can have so many oppurtunities to make up for this one.

Yes Jack Williams
Also one factor is not an excuse but a reality - we are soooo young - and we can learn - an hopefully recruit free throw shooters

and people fail to realize we are learning. We stunk at rebounding, now two games in a row we outrebounded. Earlier the opposing teams top guard were having career nights against us. Now in two games, we've shut down Kilpatrick and Carter

Where have I heard this song before? Oh, right. Every year. Just wait til next year! Just wait! Next year this team will be great. I swear next year we will turn the corner! Ehh, the year after next I promise we will be good!

Don't get me wrong, I think if we get Lawrence and D'Lo stays next yr, anything less than the NCAA's are a total bust and we will have a good mix. But until it actually happens, it won't happen. No more if, no more maybe, no more could. This team next year will either do or not do. At some point the conversation turns from "maybe next year" to "wow SJ is terrible". We are very close to the latter.

i am an optimist but since st. john's lost some questionable games in their non conference schedule, there is very little margin for error.

You can keep all these so called athletes, give me 5 guys who can shoot the fu--kn ball.[

WE COULD NEVER SHOOT SO WHATS NEW What is amazing is that he can not correct poor foul shooting we could finish last in the big east ts not that far fetched

This team makes the same mistakes as they did early in the season.. terrible fundamentals , schoolyard free throw
percentages and poor shot selection..

Not playing Branch, who looked awful, suggests Lavin has little confidence in him. So Steve better put a PG, on his recruiting list. I 'd like to see a traditional home grown NYC Pg in the lineup next year..

If this is all we're going to get from Lavin as a Coach, it's downright ugly BB TO WATCH.. other than Harrison, who did not come thru tonite at the finish with the foul shots, etc, this team has no offense with any direction or purpose.

Agree. Harrison was fouled on almost every drive late in the second half; down one you have to go to the basket. Look how many times he drove and handed off for a dunk. Please tell me Lavin didn't set up that three pointer. Just goes to show you, if you don't have shooters, not going to shoot foul shots consistently. What did announcer Valvano say, " The Red Storm is ranked 13th in foul shooting in the B.E."

Branch looked awful? I can only recall one play where he actually looked awful. Otherwise, he was the lighting match that ignited our run in the first half. He also had 3 assists to one turnover.

Our FT shooting isn't just bottom in the Big East...it's something like 320th out of like 350 or 360 schools nationally. Yeah. That bad. And to think I was scolded for suggesting our team sucked at FT's early in the year.

I disagree about Branch. He made a poor decision to drive through a crowded middle thus losing the ball. But Lavin made a mistake pulling him out for the rest of the game. Afterall, Greene wasn't that effective running the offense.

No more..
That was the problem all these too many years.
We aren't close to terrible any more, I was at the niagara nightmare. I drove down for the Maryland humiliation. And I know TERRIBLE
We are now frustrating but you can see the parts coming together.
There are lots of parts that don't fit without re-molding.
One more year with a big and no major fit loss, like the loss of Harkless last year.
Optimism is a prediction, hope is a virtue.
In the past, wait till next year was hope.
With this team and the one add, it is a prediction..but with justification this time.

Who was playing PG at Crunch time down the stretch? I saw Branch being a cheerleader on the sidelines? And, i saw no lightning on the court at all . I only saw the 2nd half but, he wasn't a factor in a 2 pt homecourt game.

Yeah.... Is he supposed to just insert himself into the game? No one can be a factor sitting on the bench. What kinda foolishness you're posting?!

Go watch the first half.

You only saw the second half, therefore you have no right to deny that he started a run the FIRST half.

Optimism is actually hope in my eyes. Hope and belief

Thats forbidden for St Johns fans

Well it shouldn't be. We have improved vastly and have an NBA player in our starting lineup. That is why I am optimistic, and believe when can still make some noise.
