St. John's/Rutgers Game Thread

Red Johnnies...said very well.

I was more frustrated then ever last night because I truly felt like they needed this game. With the next two games being Gtown and ND a 1-4 record is highly likely.

That being said, anyone who questions where this program is compared to where it was prior to Lavin needs to have their head examined. If they get Jordan and Lawrence Lavin will finally have talent spread across three years and there will be no turning back. Hopefully the fan base will rally and we can get more than 6k at MSG! Not an excuse, but maybe if there were 12k of rabid fans there last night the Johnnies would have had a little more energy.

"If".
Who cares about Jordan and Lawrence right now? This team has enough talent to beat a Nova on the road and enough talent to beat a Rutgers at MSG of all places.

What incentive do fans have to come out? At least our excuse last year was that there were only 6 players and you knew everyone would play hard and give it their all.

This team has 2 set plays in its offensive Playbook from what I have seen watching closely this year:
1. Horns- which is a curl play for D'Angelo which is always called on out of bounds plays
2. Some play call (I don't know the name) to get Jakarr a 16-18 foot jumper

That's it. Everything else is just a pray & chuck from D'Angelo or Phil. That is unacceptable.

Guys like Mike Rice can't hold a candle to Steve Lavin's legacy. So why are we being so severely out coached? Why does Marco get a token 2 minutes then yanked for no apparent reason? Why does the offense look more fluid when Branch is out there and he gets yanked? Why does Lavin call (re: bur) timeouts just to talk to the players and not draw anything up?

This is so frustrating. It doesn't take much game tape for another team to watch to figure us out.

We watched D'Angelo repeatedly split the double team, get in the lane and dish it or easy baskets against Rutgers. Phil Greene hasn't done tat once this year. Why does he have the keys to the car?

You can't give an alumnus, a student or a curious tourist reason enough to pay to watch this team play. Sorry.

This is why I would care about Jordan and Lawrence right now. If nothing is going to change then we just need to hope we can throw enough talent on the court in the future to win despite the lack of coaching. If we're going to play like an AAU showcase team, might as well want the best players.

I understand your point. But that is a scary mentality to have.

If what you're saying is actually the case, then Baron Davis was right on the money. Is this prideful fan base ready to admit that?

You mean the same Baron Davis who still comes to practice with SJU and keeps a close friendship with Lavin? I know what you are speaking about, but he has back tracked on that comment about Lavin.

He was also sitting behind the bench last night.

I absolutely cannot believe how Branch got put on the bench for a) the bulk of the 2nd half after committing just ONE turnover and b) got taken out of the first half so quickly AS HE WAS PLAYING SO WELL.

Jamal does everything this offense needs offensively. He knows how to get into the lane in the half court, how to create for others and get the offense moving OUTSIDE of the 15 second mark on the shot clock, call for ball screens and he looks for the next-pass-ahead IMMEDIATELY after catching the outlet. We were a +6 with him in the game in the first half and I have no idea why he got taken out after only 5 minutes in that half. Branch isn't as good a defender as Greene (don't know why Branch stands straight up when defending on the ball) but his positives far outweigh the negatives.

Meanwhile, when was the last time Phil Greene had a play at or near the rim?? All he can seemingly do as a PG is go east and west. It seems like he hasn't been able to heart a defender off the bounce in forever. And BTW, I really like Phil's game, just not as a PG. I like our look when we go Branch, D'Lo, Greene, Jakarr and Obekpa. Greene has a spot in this rotation and that's as a wing. And when teams go man to man on us, Phil has a much better chance of beating a guy off the bounce when a SF is defending him as opposed to a PG, which we've seen he can't blow by.

Why because we lost a close game does it mean Lavin can't coach? Not every game is going to be a blowout. We didn't make free throws...man our coach stinks. Sampson took some stupid shots, man Lavin sucks.. Cmon people... It's getting absurd already.

I was pissed just as much as everyone else here after last night's debacle. But I agree with you, thsiplace should be the next setting for "American Horror Story -- Redmen.com."

It is nuts.

I was pissed about losing too. We would have won easily if we had one more guy who could score. We really do need another scorer or two. Regardless, the ball didn't roll our way, but I don't think it was related to our strategy. Gotta make shots to win.

100% agree. Branch needs lion's share of minutes at the PG spot. I don't care about a few bad decisions. He's quite good and I think we might have won if he played more. He gets the offense moving.

Well, our resident midget porn enthusiast FUN currently doing soliloquies over on Big East Boards gave me a very l o n g......shot-out over on BEB this morning. For those that don't read his fortune-cookie day-after x-rated drivel, here are my film credits:
FUN:
"If you guessed me, you'd be wrong. It is in fact some fuckhead called Class of 72 who posts over on Redmen dot com. That's right, some shitbrain comes to this website, reads my carefully crafted jokes, copies them down, and then goes over to RM and presents them as if they were his own. This morning he’s even written a game recap suspiciously like this one wherein he refers to TGAPL as "the great and powerful one." I have in the past had occasion to bury my foot deep in Class of 72's ass, because he knows fuck-all about basketball and is not very smrat ® besides, but I never thought he’d stoop to plagiarism. Among writers at least plagiarists are the lowest form of human scum. Sure, Class of 72 isn’t a writer, I’m surprised he can turn his computer on with breaking a bone, but at least we can all agree that his theft is reprehensible and that he’s a repulsive fuckstain."

Yes, I must admit I enjoy FUN's witty Midget porn analyses very much. Since I am not an attorney who specialized in defending Child porn abusers and can barely walk and use my new IPhone at the same time, he is correct about my computer skills.
Yes, I make fun of him here and do so intentionally. But I never thought he would take it the point of making his audience on BEB....RealFan, PMG and 6 other members, think I copied his Al Goldstein Screw Magazine style here on RM and using his gifted post-game thoughts as my own!!
Quite the contrary! You see, you FUN non-followers, I write my shit within an hour after I leave the game while Mr. Goldstein writes his shit the day after! He seems to be shitstain copying my comments about Branch and Philley Green at the PG postion and using them the DAY AFTER on BEB!!!
Now I have been known to use and abuse 4-letter words to the point my wife has duct-taped soap to my mouth but when he says "we can all agree that his theft is reprehensible" ........well, is like saying it would be safe to leave your dogs, sheep and horses with FUN at his stable knowing he has his Brazialian girlfriend lubricated for another 20 minutes of animal husbandry! F U you perverted POS!

I am sure his Georgetown game analysis will be posted on BEB within the first 2 hours post-game now that he sees none of my posts follow his.....quite the opposite.
As the one-eyed hooker said to the sailor..........I'll keep an eye out for ya' Mr. FUN!

Don't worry I'm sure one of the ever so scrupulous moderators like Tom in Simsbury who spent so many of his golden years monitoring my writings here on RM will delete the above post, which is libelous, containing as is does false statements of fact which are damaging to my reputation, such as it is.

Meanwhile, thanks to all for the warm thoughts and PMs regarding this horrible calumny. If there were a God I'd keep you in my prayers.

Why because we lost a close game does it mean Lavin can't coach? Not every game is going to be a blowout. We didn't make free throws...man our coach stinks. Sampson took some stupid shots, man Lavin sucks.. Cmon people... It's getting absurd already.

What was wrong with the strategy yesterday? Nothing.. We defended pretty well and it the glass. We just didn't make shots at times only have one guy why can score which is Harrison. My only real criticism yesterday is that Branch didn't play nearly enough because he's a lot better PG than Phil Greene. Greene is best off the ball.

We score the majority of our points from wing it and pray type shots. Who gets credit for that?

We lost a close game. And we also just happened to possibly play the ugliest game of the year against Cincy and won a close game. D'Angelo threw up a prayer against Cincy near the end that went in. Again, who gets credit for that?

It's not the loss that bothers me. It is the lack of a gameplan, head scratching player rotations and what I see as a complete lack of accountability on the floor.

I was at the game and didn't even know that. Do you think Davis was keeping tabs of Lavin's coaching decisions last night?

In fact, Davis may be using his close ties to Lavin and hang around the program as a ruse, because he really is going to write a tell all book about the dificiencies of Lavin's coaching.

No that is not besides the point. If Davis was immature when he said Lavin's coaching kept them from winning a title, (and we don't know what he said exactly, except for the drivel from lemmings at the UCLA boards), but now has ammended that and respects his coaching, what does that say? I think it means Davis respects Lavin's coaching.

That says a lot, and is the point.

I hadn't been on BEB in a while until about 20 minutes ago, but your game recaps are freakin HILARIOUS (in a good way). Keep giving us a good laugh.

In thinking about young freshman on the floor..I remember several games when Mark Jackson was a freshman. I had season tickets right in back of the bench and every time Lou would put him in the game, the fans in our section would all blurt out variations of: "here we go again...a good asset and good shot and three charging fouls coming up". Sure enough, Mark would demonstrate some great emerging talent and offset that with a stubborn mindset that compelled him to drive through the lane no matter who was in front of him. It took the better part of part time freshman action to work it out of him. By the time he was a sophomore, he was much better. After that, he was excellent.
We've seen it over and over during years before and after him. Super talented high school stars who have to adapt to the pace of the college game, the physical size of the players, and refined skills beyond there own. It's obvious but many young players but on a lot of muscle between 16 or 17 until they are 20 or 21 year old seniors. And when they have continuity with each other, teamwork becomes not just affinity for, but natural corrdination with, each other.
To criticize posteres that remind us of "context' by saying they offer the same old excuse, sounds to me like the verbal version of Mark Jackson's charging fouls as a freshman. " I know what I want. So this is what I'm going to do or say, irrespective of what the reality around me requires of me to accept."
In fact, according to the announcers, this is the youngest team at this level. That doesn't excuse the coaching decision on who's playing point guard the most. It doesn't excuse the lack of practice discipline that appears on the surface from the inability to hit an average number of foul shots. It doesn't excuse the lack of intensity a player should feel from having a deeper bench that threatens their playing time. And it may not excuse the decision to chase high ranking but questionably eligible candidates. I understand those as rational criticisms, though I think circumstances excuse the last criticism.
But personal attacks on either players or posters as dreamers or apologists or blind men, who aren't enlightened enough to trash the team and coach, are much more redundant and boring and useless as the team play that is the subject of the frustration.
While venting about this set of players' inadequacies, at this point in time, may relieve our individual and collective frustration with the past ten or fifteen years, it is not grounded in any realism about the product that is emerging.
I'm sure I would be less patient if I were a student or recent graduate. We want our teams to succeed when we are living the college experience, not at some distant point. When you get as old as me, instead you can appreciate shifts in direction, trends that are emerging, and key signs that reveal a different dynamic emerging.
And from them, you can take comfort. I am finally emerging from the disgust and dismay and absence of hope I have had as an alumnus for decades because i'm seeing the tide slowly turning and I'm sure we are within reach of respectability finally. I
It's not here yet. I complain during the game in my posts too. But I am moving from "hope", a virtue as I said in an earlier post, to "optimism" a sincere belief, even a logical prediction, that there is finally a rational basis for expecting improvement and success...probably next year with one or two keepers and one or two adds.

Now that you are back posting, does it mean I must dust off my ever so scrupulous moderator's handbook?

Or should I just sit back, be entertained, and attempt to become a genyous (see what I did there) by reading your posts?

Great post.

Even with all this frustration there is alot of hope. Prior years there was no light at the end of the tunnel.

I'm not back posting, so you can do whatever you like. As you know I no longer post here because I grew tired of having my prose evicerated by clerks on the ground of petty personal animus. Not you obviously, the other clerks.

What you might consider is whether a website about a Catholic institution - especially a Catholic institution - should countenance unfounded allegations of bestiality, child abuse and child pornography; perhaps you should wonder whether a more litigous indiviudal than myself would sue the site owner and his 10 children into the poor house on the basis of such loathesome allegations. Of course I'd never do that to my boon companion Paul, to whom I contributed generously during his recent troubles, for all the good will it garnered me. But its been my experience that not everyone has the same bounteousness of spirit as do I. As usual, YMMV.

No there isn't. We are doomed!

Haven't you heard of the redmayan.com calendar, which is what we use here? It is predicting the end of our college basketball existence 3-13-13 (see all of the unlucky # 13's?)

That same calendar is also predicting death by noxious gas. The kind that keeps being passed around here under the guise of forum posts.

Now that you are back posting, does it mean I must dust off my ever so scrupulous moderator's handbook?

Or should I just sit back, be entertained, and attempt to become a genyous (see what I did there) by reading your posts?

Well look at who soiled his little undies when his foul mouth irreverant self gets a little taste (not the TGAPL semen he accuses others of gargling of course) and who so proudly mentions his affinity for midget porn, of his own medicine!?!?

Why, having mentioned bestialty, CP, rape and other unmentionables here on many infamous occasions, one would think you very familiar with the subjects. As you can see, your Screw Magazine sports Anal ASIs is very easily mimicked by even Brooklyn street urchins like me.

Now, the funniest things you say here are things like "litigious" and allegations when, in fact, you are a witness to your own misdeeds and accusatory ramblings disguised, of course, as a Mass Murderer and child molester. That your other profile on BEB is that of a psychopath reveals a little Hannibal Lechter "wanna-be" in you. I suspect you also enjoy torturing other people's pets but that is for a different discussion.

As for trying to buy Paul's "goodwill" with some she$kles, I think he has more moral fiber than that.
I am very glad to finally see you were driven to return from under your BEB rock and finally give all your fans a "Maurice Chevalier-like" cameo appearance here. I am glad we have so many things in common....about the program.....but I enjoy walking my dog and picking up after it ...... So next time you visit, pick up some of the shit you left behind here and stop being such a whinning little twit.
All the best!
