St. John's-Georgetown, Game II Game Thread

Well for one, Branch coming in makes Greene come off the bench. Considering some of the games he's had, that's pretty good for a sixth or seventh action.

I also think you are selling Garrett short. He was behind already and has shown some flashes. Bu the start of the next season, I think he can either be an effective starter or a major part of the rotation based on what's added.

you could be right about Garrett...i said it earlier in this thread that he shows flashes out there.

I know nothing about Branch except that he was a top 50 recruit and i don't think too many people here know much about him. I'm taking the wait and see approach...who knows, maybe greene turns out to be better than branch?

People don't realize the herculean task it is to beat a top Big East team with 5 freshmen and no bench at all. We should be losing all these games by 30+ on paper. The fact that we threatened til the end is a testament to good coaching and ALL of these kids. No Pointer isn't an offensive superstar, but we have zero upperclassmen to fall back on while these kids develop. We have no bench. People criticizing our play here have lost their minds and doesn't have a clue how woefully overmatched we are depth and experience-wise. We're playing at a level that is waaaay better than a team with only 5 freshmen should play.

whose fault is it that we have no bench at all?

When you're 10-15, no matter the circumstances, criticism is fair.

Two guys quit on the team mid season, two guys didn't qualify right before the season. In addition we had to replace 12 guys which is real difficult. To say "no matter the circumstances" is silly. Circumstances certainly do matter. That's like me saying "a guy with one leg didn't win the 400M hurdles in the Olympic, but no matter the circumstances, criticism is fair". Our circumstances losing the ENTIRE team entering this season is the biggest reason we're in this spot. Sme unfortunate events with our payers recruits didn't help.

we had three players transfer and two kids academically ineligible. the circumstances were tough, but lavin gets paid millions to handle the tough circumstances and execute. He is ultimately responsible for the transfers and ineligible players. I love Lavin, but let's be fair.

Illwill, IMHO it is you who is not being fair based on the circumstances. Rebuilding is a process and not instantaneous. Lavin is really not responsible for transfers. That is between a kid and his family for their own reasons. Lavin can not force a kid to stay. When a new staff comes on board, often kids transfer. Two kids didn't qualify which was a surprise to the staff. They had the grades. NCAA just didn't believe them and for no reason except distrust said they couldnt clear our 3 kids. They all had the passing grades, but NCAA just said...nah, we're not approving them.

I'm being completely fair...Lavin gets paid to recruit and make tough decisions. Rebuilding is a process but i wouldn't be complaining (ok, maybe i would :) ) if we were losing with a full deck. My biggest issue with this team the whole season has been the lack of bodies.

You wouldn't complain, if the team had a full deck, but you're gonna constantly complain about a team that is shorthanded? Yeah, that makes sense. How many of you on this board actually believe this?

Besides, why constantly complain about something that can't even be rectified until the offseason?

we couldn't get over the hump all second half...we need another option besides moe and deangelo. for those who think we will automatically be a good team next year, where is that other scoring option going to come from?
Branch could be one. More players means more defense like last year which was a lot of trapping and mixing it up which means more points in transition.

Pointer and Garrett can thrive in that type of environment.

Branch is not a given...all he is is a highly rated recruit. he's not proven anything.

What were the scoring averages of our players last year after Hardy ? Take a guess

huh?
You are saying we need another scoring option next year. We have Moe and Harrison ( I think Moe will be back ) and I'm asking you a simple question.

Looking at last years team what was our scoring for the players after Hardy last year

we don't need another major scoring option...a guy who can consistently hit jumpers and score in crunch time will help tho. Last year we had DJ and Paris Horne who were clutch players and guys we could count on outside of hardy. Right now we have nobody to count on outside of moe and deangelo...and im asking, who does everyone think will assume that DJ/Paris role next season to make us into a good team?

Paris averaged 7.9 ppg last year as a senior. Phil is averaging 7.7 before todays game. Who is to say Phil won't develop further. I'd like another scorer also.

But I also think with more bodies and definitely needing some more height that we are going to be a lot better once we don't have to start worrying about fouls and can start playing baseline to baseline defense without worrying about burning the kids out or fouling out

We also had a rejuvinated sean evans and the other big guy (drawing another blank...not burrell, but u know who im talking about.)

We had many options outside of hardy...im hoping amir develops into a kennedy type player altho i don't think he'll ever have a good outside shot.

Bottom line is that guys like John15, illwill and a few others are really killing this board. The constant whining and complaining is almost too much to bear for most reasonable fans of this program. I hope it ends soon.Trust me, I'm not ready to go rah, rah yet. I just think we need anger season or two to rebuild before ripping the job being done by staff and players..

Either there is no coaching going on or these kids are just not thinking. End game time management is horrendous. Dont think its the coaching........ and Pointer should either work on his shot in the off season or transfer to Michigan. It kills a team when the defense plays so far off a player that they are almost doubling everyone else.

We're packing in the defense on purpose. We have to shut down interior. Can't chase shooters with only 5 guys. You really don't have a clue.

Ha ha ha, why dont you try reading a post before you comment, you really look stupid here. I was referring to the other team's defense on Pointer. :p

We're all FANS? Right? Do we have to call each other stupid? Everyone needs to take a few pints together....

Agree, but if you look at where these attacks come from and to who. On this site, if you are not in a constant Rah Rah state and criticize anything at all, you are verbally abused. Hell if I wanted verbal abuse, I would hang out more with my kids. :) The problem is that any form of "nasty" should be addressed by those in charge regardless of who it is. As you stated earlier, we are all fans here right?

"fans" like you claim to be don't start new threads calling out the head coach to cause trouble. In message board lingo, that is referred to as "flaming, which is inciting trouble. It was obvious your intent. If you don't want to draw ire from actual fans of the program, the best way is to not be a "Richard".

Hey my post re. Lavin's claim of a top 10 class was not sarcastic. I figured if the guy has the nuts to state that claim publicly over and over then he must know something we don't, And to that I give him credit. Didn't Rex Ryan hear allot of crap after he proclaimed the Jets were Super Bowl bound where all they made it to was the toilet bowl? I think that Lavin is too smart to make such a comment unless he can back it up.

In terms of yourself. You were so anxious to put down what I had to say re. Pointer, you didnt even read the post and was completely out of whack on your comment. There are several posters on here that you may not agree with yet do have much to offer, but your narrow minded sentiment puts them (me included) in a category of not being fans. What true fan is not critical on occasion when it comes to the teams they root for?

Bottom line is that guys like John15, illwill and a few others are really killing this board. The constant whining and complaining is almost too much to bear for most reasonable fans of this program.

...brings me back to my post from a few minutes ago regarding posters not being capable of reading criticism.

I'm doing everything you're doing...giving opinions. nobody is whining, some of us are just not happy with what's going on with this program right now. I could easily say that what's killing this board is the blind optimism and thought that we will be a sweet-16 team next season. It's tough to read...even for the most reasonable fans of this program like John and myself.

It's very possible. But he was a top 50 recruit, scout named him a top defender, and he was playing pretty well off the bench for a coach and a system that he wasn't brought in for. At worst, he's an above-average guard that can come off the bench, which means he's better than Stith and Lindsey, since neither one is here.

After Hardy our leading scorers

Approx..

Brownlee 12
DJ 10
Paris under 8
Burrell 6

It wasn't clear you were referring to Pointer at first. I read it several times and put it together. I don't believe for a second you aren't here to just cause trouble. You just called people "wishful thinkers" who are providing good info on recruits on the thread about Young. You know that little karma thing next to your profile? Yours is negative 25. A little bit of introspection would lead you to believe that 25 people took the time to check the box agreeing with my postulating that you're just here to cause trouble or are just generally disagreeable.

The staff sendtthose kids to that school (drawing a blank on the name) which from my understand (i couild be wrong) hhad a reputation for being shady in terms of grades. It's tough to recruit 10 great players...but it's not that hard to recruit 10 players (or so) that qualify academically. I haven't even mentioned the kids who have decommitted from our program. But i'll give lavin a pass on gathers cause i think his health had a play with that.

Yep...we all wish we were in better shape. We have been playing with half a team in the Big East. Coach is out recruiting...hopefully a top 10 class...I'll take top 25 though.....at the end of the day this is a tough year, but we are probably set for a more balanced recruiting class going forward if coach can complete his mission. Again, let's wait until May. Until then, let's use the board and support the kids. Also, I'll take the credentials of the current staff versus most school's out there.

Once again, a mod spoke on it. It has nothing to do with me. I'm not a mod. Quite frankly, it has far more to do with you having a different opinion. If you can't see where I'm coming from then so be it.

I think most folks would agree that you're generally a troublemaker of sorts and an instigator.

This is by far your most amazing post....... I guess the translation here would be............ you can't have a rational argument based on the facts and since your crude and irrational responses cant cut it, get rid of those who disagree with you, otherwise " we are killing this board".

As ILLWILL stated before, its posters like yourself who are not fans at all, that are killing this site. True fans understand the passion of all fans and while they may not agree, they respect their right to voice their opinion as they recognize that we are all out for the betterment of the program.

Good game plan on Dunlap's part today and we stayed competiitve until the end against the #11 team..

Hard to get over the hump when you've got only two good shooters and have to back off on the other team for fear of fouling out and leaving the team short-handed.

GG tries as hard as a man can but is lacking in athleticism and coordination.

Harrison is one of those rare players whose willpower can keep you in a game.

Again, let's wait until May. Until then, let's use the board and support the kids. Also, I'll take the credentials of the current staff versus most school's out there.

fair points all around...and i agree.

I am just a regular fan, born and raised in NYC my whole life. I implore everyone to be patient. We have all been through tough times as fans, tougher times in real life these days...let's stay positive in the one forum we come to enjoy St John's basketball. Let's stop the back and forth for now .... It's so easy to keep going ..on and on...so easy to get offended over the written word. I sense that everyone has a FIRE inside to see the team do well. I think we're going in the right direction...for those who have been super critical because of the build up of disappoints, let's wait until May. I hope to be happily surprised. I have no inside ties, just a huge fan.

If you wasn't being a troublemaker of some sort, then otis wouldn't have spoken in this thread. Keep believing that what you're doing is no different than what most others are doing.

lol troublemaker? why, cause i have a different opinion than you? Am i calling other posters names or cursing? Am I forcefully attacking other posters? No...

Once again, a mod spoke on it. It has nothing to do with me. I'm not a mod. Quite frankly, it has far more to do with you having a different opinion. If you can't see where I'm coming from then so be it.

I think most folks would agree that you're generally a troublemaker of sorts and an instigator.

the only troublemakers on this board are posters like you an MCPNA who are actively trying to get posters banned for a difference of opinion. While the rest of us are posting critiques and opinions of the team, you're wasting your time calling posters instigators and trouble-makers and probably sending PM's to moderators like you did on the other board.

A mod (otis) said my posts were repetitive, and when i called him out on that he had no further explanation. My posts are not any more repetitive than the many cheerleaders here who sling around nothing but praise for a 10-15 team.

Let's get back to talking about the team...as you can ssee, I have convo's with other posters here (della) where they are capable of going back n forth without resorting to the nonsense that you spew.
