South Fl Transfer

The one thing I'd think even with our record not being where we would like it is if you are a guard who wants to score this is a great destination. It would be nuts to transfer and sit when you can get all the playing time you want especially if you don't intend on playing 4 years

That being said nothing pretty much surprises me anymore with our program
I get the feeling your upcoming trip and internet ban is going to be good for you. :) If half these rumors are true about our players transferring, its enough to get you sick.
Haaaa. Nathalie said to me yesterday what will be worse for you having no internet but being able to drink Cuban rum and cigars or complaining about your St Johns team when you read bad news.:)

Being off the grid will be good for my health although I'm going to try and find 1 place in Cuba that has internet for Nat's Ipad just to check in to this site to make sure the world didn't end

So Lovett is leaving and we're getting this chucker/malcontent?

I understand that many of the kids playing college basketball, including perhaps Mr. LoVett, face financial challenges while seeing non players around them getting rich, however my fear is that if LoVett bolts college for the glitter of the NBA that as a 6 footer his fate will end up similar to Omar Cook and God Shamgod.

Granted that Omar has had a long career playing in Spain, Italy, Lithuania and Montenegro but I would be surprised if he did not see himself in the NBA after being drafted by Orlando in the 2001 NBA draft.

I think it would be in Ponds best interests to spend the next 2-3 seasons hitting the weight room and asking to play the point. Best chance at a solid pro career. Maybe even some NBA in his future.

I was thinking the exact same thing. If Lovett leaves I don't know why he wouldn't want to play the point w his size , giving him best shot at NBA.

The kid from S. Fl switched from the 2 to the 1. Have to figure if Lovett leaves and he comes he would want to be the PG. But your right who knows. I think Ponds would make an excellent pg.

Everyone wants to play in the NBA. But some of these kids would just be satisfied to get paid to play basketball. Anywhere. Some kids also don't like school. Also there is no guarantee that staying in school gets you any closer to the NBA. Some kids might just want to start the journey sooner and get paid while they are trying to get where they want to go.
Honestly no one on here cares about Lovett's future, they just want him to stay in school so ST John's basketball will be better. I understand that and feel the same way, I am just honest about it.

I would soften that sentiment a bit. I agree that most here, myself included, care more about the program than an individual kid's career path. But most of us root for the kids to do well after they leave -- even if they transfer. For example, I find myself looking at the UNLV box scores after every game to see how Christian Jones did.

There are times when I am admittedly less than objective when hoping a kid will not leave early. It is so frustrating to get a very good kid to build the program around and achieve some continuity and stability. That said, many of the kids need to make some money to help their families out so who am I to question their motives or challenge their decision? To me, it is just part of the nature of the game.

The Xaviers of the world lose some kids, but prosper with a nucleus of experienced players, not originally elite recruits. Obviously we will never be Duke, Kentucky, etc.,so the Xavier model seems appropriate for SJU. In my opinion we can't afford to lose potentially good four year kids like Sima in the face of losing any elite kids we get early. Sima had his warts, but so did Ochefu of Nova at a similar stage if I recall correctly.

Our merry go round just spins too often. Hopefully by 2018 we will see a balanced roster & basis for continuity and success as SJU 15 references often.

Lastly, most of the kids who leave I care about & enjoy seeing how they are doing.

If Lovett leaves, more posts of "Good luck" or "He is stupid and we are better off w/o him"?
And again, I want him to stay because we are better with him. Not going to get mad him for leaving though. And honestly as good as he is and as much as I like him, 2 or 3 more years here is not helping him make the NBA. If he ever finds his way into the league it will probably be the overseas, NBDL route that gets him there.

Great post. I agree with the Sima example. While it is not a huge blow at this very moment, I do regret losing the anticipated junior and senior version of him.

To that point, we should not lose sight of how valuable it is that we can have kids like Yakwe and Owens for two more years.

Is your analysis any different for Ponds? If so, I'm curious to hear the difference between he and Lovett in terms of their path to the NBA.

Rumor is Lovett, which is why I used him.
Lovett leaving actually helps Ponds individually. If Ponds can show he is a point guard over the next 3 seasons he might have a more direct route to the pros. Still way too small but I think he is more skilled than Lovett.

If the question is would there would be same animosity toward Ponds leaving as there would for Lovett? SLIGHTLY LESS. Lovett's nomadic ways would make it a little worse for him.

Frankly I wouldn't be surprised if either of these kids leaves. They are not in college to earn degrees. Both may not be ready for the pros but their parents and handlers have set these kids goal of becoming a professional basketball player and in today's world the opportunity to that are available more than ever. Tyler Ulis is only 5'9 and got drafted. There is money to be made in China now that hungry are for basketball. The only way to get players to stay 4 years is to be lucky enough to find talented "student-athletes" in that 3 or 4 star class whose parents did not hand them over to brokers at a young age. We have 4 or 5 kids on this team handled by brokers. One is gone and those who remain will always cause concern to upset the equilibrium. Unfortunately for St. John's they are not the 5* players Kentucky replaces easily every year. And, even Kentucky's case, although those players position UK to be Final Four material it rarely guarantees winning a championship. Hence, the greatest recruiter of this generation, has won only ONE national championship.

Agree, but for every Moe Harkless there is a D'Lo, Sir Dom, PG VI, Branch, etc The top 100 kids who will stay in school for 4 years. Since we're still so early in the rebuilding process, we don't have the benefit of continuity on the roster. So the defections are magnified. Hopefully within the next few years things will change. Having said that, I hate this system where kids are forced to either go to college for one year(usually less since they leave after the final game) and feign being a student, or go overseas. It's always been bad, it's never been worse.

I think the players, and the fans, just can't accept how incredibly good, and big, and strong, and fast you have to be to make it to the NBA. We have all seen players that met the criteria listed above, yet, never make it to the NBA, or maybe get a series of 10 day contracts. While teams will use draft picks on undeveloped potential, or take flyers on pure athletes that fit their size requirements, 6'0 guards are not what they are looking for unless they are truly exceptional at making those around them better. There is no one on this roster that will likely be able to make a career out of playing in the NBA. It's like a 5'6 inch girl making it as a high fashion model.

I liked the old days where a kid had time to develop and get an education before going pro. With the whole world an option, any talented player can make a nice living for a long time even if they leave school early. If that want Lovett wants, he is entitled to it. He is not going to grow any taller, so further seasoning may not matter.
