South Fl Transfer

The only conclusion I can come up w is that Lovett thinks he won't make the NBA, Since transferring doesn't make sense. He may not be a fan of school and may want to start making money in Europe. I hope my theory is wrong and he stays. But the reality of the situation is the staff is not pursuing this kid for no reason.(didn't see Paultzmans previous post).

Lovett does not want to sit out another year if he transfers.[/quote ] My theory is not that he transfers. It is that if he is too small for the NBA, 22 years old, and don't like school, that he leaves after this year for Europe. But as others have questioned, how does the staff know this now?

Maybe telltale signs are there, or maybe he told them

Certainly wouldn't be the first time a kid acted irrationally, but I don't see the logic in marcus telling the staff he plans to go pro after playing less than ten games. I would think that would negatively affect the staff's perception of his commitment to the team and potentially jeapordize his playing time.

I hope there aren't any issues with academics. Like Rysheed, that could be a telltale sign that the kid is not committed to hanging around next year. Reports from last year, however, suggested that Marcus worked very hard to get eligible.

With the exception of those in this Board who are "in the know", I think it's all speculation at this point. I definitely agree with the sentiment expressed by others that the staff wouldn't be recruiting the South Florida kid unless they believed there would be substantial minutes available at the pg spot next year.

Meant that he may have told them that he is contemplating turning pro after this year. Lots of connecting dots/speculation at this point . But let's face facts, around here where there's smoke, there is almost always fire.

I still think the priority has to be a bruiser, PF. Even if Lovett leaves we are covered at both guard spots w Ponds,Simon,Ellison and Mussini, and at the 3 w Clark and Bash. Don't know how you can tell this kid he would be getting plenty of minutes, unless he is better then I think. I did read an article saying he is a gym rat, hard worker, and a good 3 pt shooter. He was a 2 , but wasn't getting looks because of his size and switched to PG, Never can have too much depth and trust the staff . And I agree, when there's smoke there's fire at SJU.

I love ponds, but I suppose the thought is that without Lovett we don't have a true pg. For my part, I think ponds is more than capable of playing the point. Not sure if Simon Can fill in at the point. Paultz mentioned he's more of a combo guard. I would not feel comfortable with either mussini or Ellison running the point for any substantial period of time.

I hate the idea of bringing a guy in who won't play until second semester. Makes it very difficult to develop chemistry.

fingers crossed this is all false....if not Batman & Robin didn't last long. I was looking forward to all the college hoops mags next year showing the johnnies as a top backcourt. A nice winning streak could change a lot of things

It is amazing to read the baseless hunches and idle speculation by some in this thread.

Best holiday wishes to all.

I greatly appreciate the fact expressed on this thread that we are after a high level transfer. I however hate conjecture and the wild thoughts that are expressed on this thread. I greatly appreciate the staffs effort in attempting to cover all bases. You can't win in college ball without a good pg. we did not have 1 throughout the entire Norm 6 seasons. We did not have a true pg during Lavins 5 seasons, other than Branch who was relegated to the dog house, and did not have 1 during Coach Mullins first season. Now we finally have a very talented pg who many believe would never stay 4 years , we have Mussini who many believe would never stay 4 years, we have Malik who many believe would be better suited at a lower level or a school where he could get more pt. I believe any one or more of those 3 may not be here for all 4 seasons. All off the assumptions raised in respect of those 3 are valid. So I think the staff is doing the right thing in targeting a high level pg transfer irrespective of the reasons for same. Smart, smart , smart.

Otis and RN I respect both of you immensely, but this is not wild speculation. This is putting 2 and 2 together and coming up with 4. The staff is not going hard after yet another 6' guard(who can play next year) when we already have 3 who are getting significant minutes, unless they feel strongly that one or more of those 3 won't be here next year. At least that's the way I see it.

I did not realize Lovett was 22 years old. That's probably giving him a sense of urgency, rightly or wrongly. There has been some "smoke" around him-- I forget which game it was, but Mullin left him out of the starting lineup and he did not come off the bench for a good while. Never a good sign, but still nothing in the disciplinary league of Rysheed Jordan. And he's had bad luck with injuries. Add it all up and not hard to see him being less than ecstatic. Hope it works out for him and he stays, but the staff is obviously being prudent and proactive.

He's 20 years old

Yup, 21 in March.

On another note, Ponds didnt turn 18 until he graduated HS. Could maybe get another inch out of him

After having read through this thread, I would like to offer my perspective on how this transfer process works. When I was involved in AAU basketball and a situation came up where a young man wanted to transfer, I would call 4 or 5 coaches and let them know. The coaches would say that they would keep an eye on the young man and get back to me after the season. This "did not" mean that they were truly interested in the young man, only that as a way of keeping a good relationship that they would keep an eye on him. Now once the word was out, one of the coaches I spoke to may have heard from a coach at a different school that he is looking for a player like the one I have and he would let me know. I would then call that coach and see what could be worked out.
What is believe happened in this situation is that the player's AAU or high school coach reached out to the schools listed and informed them of his desire to transfer. The schools will reply that they will look into the situation. Then in today's Digital world, they will list these schools on Twitter, Instagram or wherever. This also alerts other schools to the situation and the player ends up with offers from schools not listed.
All I am saying is let's not get too carried away with this situation.

I stand corrected. Someone else in this thread posted that he was 22. Last time I listen to anyone on these boards! :)

Appreciate info on process Panther. Could be wrong, but I sense Matt really likes this kid. We'll see. In any event, let's upset Butler this week.

Per Evan Daniels

USF transfer Jahmal McMurray is expected to visit St. John's later this week, per a source. Baylor, Texas, Va Tech, WKU, ASU & others in mix

As part of the visit, maybe there will be a one-on-one between Lovett and McMurtry in which Lovett will Linley swear that he will go pro after this year.

In all seriousness, while I'm not necessarily faulting the staff for being proactive, one would have to think that this is a distraction for the current team.
