South Fl Transfer

Paultz the last thing that's needed is another small, score first guard. If one of the small guys leave they should try and replace him with a guy in the 6'3"-6'6" range that can play guard not small forward. Rim protection, while important, does not compensate for the absence of length on the perimeter. And at a time in basketball where defenders can't put their hands on the guys they're guarding length becomes critical. It's one of the reasons Justin Simon is important but they need another guard that brings length to the table.

Agree John, but if Lovett should depart who plays PG?
Shamorie and Simon can hold down the fort at PG fine. Based on a brief look at Simon playing for Brewster Academy his floor game and passing are very good. He will need to,e tp shake rust off but he's a good all around guard with nice size. Until help arrives from the really talented 2018 class those two will do a good job

I admittedly have no idea how this stuff works. But assuming it is lovett who may not back I can't imagine what he or his camp would possibly be saying at this point to put the staff on alert. I mean Lovett is getting unlimited playing time and taking plenty of shots so that can't be a concern. Expressing unhappiness would only serve to jeapordize his current playing time which is against his interest. I don't get it.

Some guys sometimes want to get paid no matter the locale. We'll see.

What's the going rate for D-1 guards ?

this whole transfer thing is driving me nuts. What if Simon transfers? can he just play for another team or does he have to sit again? Maybe he doesn't see a fit here? Either way i hate all the transfer talk

The only conclusion I can come up w is that Lovett thinks he won't make the NBA, Since transferring doesn't make sense. He may not be a fan of school and may want to start making money in Europe. I hope my theory is wrong and he stays. But the reality of the situation is the staff is not pursuing this kid for no reason.(didn't see Paultzmans previous post).

The kid has played less than 10 d-1 games and he's willing to give up on his NBA dream? And he and his camp is conveying this to the staff? It's all very strange to me.

I was very excited about Lovett. The thought of him leaving after only one year is depressing. We are Saint John's!

No one likes it, but it's a reality of life in college ball nowadays.

The staff wouldn't be pursuing this guy to replace Mussini. It would be a starter they're worried is leaving.
And my completely uninformed opinion suggests that can only be Lovett.

Won't know for awhile. And I wouldn't lose sleep over it anyway. Simon will be the starting PG next year.

Simon is a wing, but agree with your initial thought. They will go all out on McMurray.

I know he has size, but I thought Simon was really a primary ball handler with less than stellar shooting, but good handle and court vision. Is that not accurate or is it just that our staff views his role as a wing?

I always assumed Justin came here to be a lead guard.

We'll see, but my impression is he is classic combo guard capable of running point at times, but not primarily. Guys who saw him practice say he runs like a deer btw.

Check your PMs Desco.

Mussini may not run like a deer and on defense he is more of a deer in headlights but his American cousin has done a great job training him and unlike last year, he is in great shape.

Some set of hooters. Definitely a candidate for the Mansiere.

I can definitely see Lovett, Ponds, Simon, and Ahmed on the floor at the same time. I'd actually give every other person taller than 6'5" a shot at center with that lineup in the preseason just to see what sticks.

Thanks LJSA
the good Christmas news is.......
We have options and possibilities and a growing bench - unlike the ghost of St. John's past

If all our guards are healthy. I could see a lineup of Lovett, Ponds,Ellison, Bash, Yakwe/Owens this year.

Didn't we just see that lineup last game? Unless freudenberg, Ali, or mussini get the start -- highly unlikely short of disciplinary action or injuries -- that's our starting lineup

This recruitment as I understand it is all about the staff doing the due diligence they should. If there is even a remote possibility of someone leaving, for whatever reason, the staff should have multiple backup plans. That was a big part of the undoing of the prior regime.

This may be a little more than due diligence. They may know that a particular player has other aspirations. Otherwise they could not guarantee a mid year all conference starter like this kid a possible starting job. If you had to clone one of our two current starting guards, this kid is him. That said, I don't like players that have been disruptive at their previous school.
Hopefully Matt and company are doing appropriate research and staying on top of the recruitment process better than the previous staff.

Obviously we would all prefer kids who did not have issues at their prior school(s), but the staff made the right call on Durand Johnson and I trust they're doing the same due diligence with this kid. No guarantees, but hoping for the best with this kid(if he commits) and with Zack.

Lovett does not want to sit out another year if he transfers.

I hope there is no suggestion that Lovett is seeking to transfer before the start of the second semester.

Well that's good. A lot can change in a few months. Everything seems to be very fluid with these kids. I'm going to stop stressing and enjoy the season. Hopefully the kids will continue to play better, pull a few upsets, and we'll catch a little luck going into next year.
