Slice Sighting

Is it possible that Slice has been coasting on his reputation recently? He really didn't have to do the heavy lifting at UK as Kenny Payne was the lead recruiter. He came here and expected that through all his contacts he'd have the handlers falling all over each other to send their kids here. He loved living the good life in NYC and maybe a combination of things caused him to fall off the pace. Add in Matt coming in and outworking him and Slice's ego was injured and he just went through the motions.

How about the general idea that no one really wants to come to SJU when you can go play at non-commuter schools, schools with pristine campuses and state of the art facilities. Oh, and schools where students, faculty and administration actually give a damn about athletics and supporting their players.

Maybe it's just me but (a) I never trusted a man who goes to church Sunday for photo ops (b) marries a very young wanna be celebrity, (c) wears expensive suits. It's like having Steve Lavin as our associate head coach! ;)

Matt is getting players to come to SJU and the 18nd 19 classes have the potential to be excellent. Furthermore we have 2 HOF coaches.

Slice was a bust. I saw little contribution to the program. Who did he recruit? Xs & Os? I would not give him a generous package. If he balks, let him scout/recruit in Brazil, etc.

Every disagreement has 2 sides to it for certain, but it was up to Mullin to manage his staff, especially since he took on role role of delegator of authorities. We probably won't hear Slice's side of it, at least until there is a settlement. It's more likely he takes his $$ and keeps quiet lest he give himself a black eye for future employment. In the end, who knows, maybe this is all on Slice and Mullin did precisiely what he should have, which is banish him at all costs.[/quote]

good assumption Beast, no one ever heard the full story on Frachilla. Once this is over it will probably be whitewashed.

Can we all at least agree that Chris should have known his pal was a thin-skinned prima donna whose recruiting prowess amounted to feasting on Xaverian talent during a historic low point in St. John's history?

Or is that too hot a take?

SJU and almost all posters were guilty of under estimating the power of Ky/Calipari in college basketball recruiting. I posted a few weeks ago that Slice is the most overpaid assistant in history but when he was hired I felt it was a tremendous move. WHY?
A mediocre coaching career at Manhattan, a couple of decent signings at Pitt. and Slice parlays that and his friendship with Cal to get the Ky job and a few years later the most sought after asst. in college bb.
Whatever he gets from SJU he should send half of it to Cal.

I'm not against that logic, but if it is applied universally to SJU lore, then Bill Self deserves a piece of a past pie, as would the estate of John Wooden.

Thanks for stating the obvious, I guess we're "doomed".

Did, not to mention designing the three piece pinstriped away uniforms.

He was at Kentucky for one year and wasn't the lead recruiter on Briscoe so what exactly did he do at Kentucky? His rep was formed recruiting NY for Pitt and he did that pretty well. If NY has changed in the way an earlier poster intimated and he could not adapt then that explains a lot.

He isn't as good as some made him out to be when we had him, and he's not as bad as some are making him out to be now that he's gone. I still think he would have done a decent job over time, but there is no doubt he was/is being paid based on an inflated reputation.

There have been times when it sure seemed that way. Now is not one of those times.

Sorry, substitute "marries" with "shacks up with". BTW, my gut tells me that indirectly, Blondie may be part of the problem. ;)

You are brilliant Chris.
Lovett top 100
Yakwe top 100
Owens borderline 100
Richard top 40
Ahmed JC AA
Ponds top 35
Simon top 25 (2017)
Clark top 50 ( 2017)
Brown top 25 ( prior to arrest ) (2017)
Diakite top 25 (2018)

Not sure what team you follow Chris but it isn't SJU as in 1 year , I repeat 1 year , our short handed staff has done an absolutely remarkable job in recruiting.
Maybe time you find another team to root for.

So now we are attacking girlfriends/wifes or significant others. What's next?
