best guess is Slice can't get a job this year because too late in the cycle so no need to shorten negotiations. Unless he did something detrimental to the team which I'm told he did not other than what some might quantify as work ethic which in his case in not really quantifiable my best guesstimate is he finally decides to settle for 75-80% of what is owed and won't take less than that since legally he won't need to and that roughly 150k extra yearly goes to Mitch plus he will get another 50-100k on top of that and I think the reason why no one is hired yet for the spot is because they are hoping to use slice savings to add to Mitch salary. If they give Slice lump sum then he would definitely take a small hair cut
I wouldn't be surprised if SJU wants to keep him unemployed for whatever amount they settle with him for. I believe that is their leverage. They likely can say, "If we pay you for 5 years, you can't work for 5 years", which would be unacceptable to Slice. That could mean it's at an impasse, and neither party would want to go to court, SJU not wanting to be on the hook for the entire amount, and Slice not wanting to risk being sidelined for 5 years. I say Advantage St. John's because they can spend $3 million (although they don't want to), but Slice wouldn't want to be out of action for 5 years.
