Slice Sighting

Is it possible that Slice has been coasting on his reputation recently? He really didn't have to do the heavy lifting at UK as Kenny Payne was the lead recruiter. He came here and expected that through all his contacts he'd have the handlers falling all over each other to send their kids here. He loved living the good life in NYC and maybe a combination of things caused him to fall off the pace. Add in Matt coming in and outworking him and Slice's ego was injured and he just went through the
motions.

Maybe it's just me but (a) I never trusted a man who goes to church Sunday for photo ops (b) marries a very young wanna be celebrity, (c) wears expensive suits. It's like having Steve Lavin as our associate head coach! ;)

They're not married.

Sorry, substitute "marries" with "shacks up with". BTW, my gut tells me that indirectly, Blondie may be part of the problem. ;)

So now we are attacking girlfriends/wifes or significant others. What's next?[/quote]

You may see an attack but I see a legitimate observation. Miss "significant other" was with Slice at Pittsburgh for his one year stint in 2013. She was with Slice at UK for his one year stint in 2014. She returns to NYC with Slice in 2015 and VOILA, he is moving on after one year. Of course this is pure speculation and conjecture but it is a slow week and I love conspiracy theories.

What influence once here I have no clue but you have to admit that Pitt to Kentucky was step up professionally and Kentucky to here was step up financially.

Virtually every one of us here would have done the same thing. Now once here if she had influence over anything I have no clue but those other moves we all would have made I'd think

What I pointed out about the one year "career" moves may be purely coincidental but I think it is 4 years in a row with one year career moves and I sincerely doubt virtually every one of us would have made those moves who were married with children and fairly settled. Now, if you are a 52 year old with a 29 year old gorgeous girlfriend I would be eager to escape Idaho for Pittsburgh and maybe even share my BBN experience with her but damn if even being home in NYC with a fat, guaranteed paycheck would be security enough for a 56 year old finally home with dear old mom. BTW, most reports had Slice earning well over $300K at Kentucky. Hopefully some day he will settle down but personally I hope it is as far from NYC as possible for everyone's sake.

500K is such an incredible amount to spend for an assistant, even more so for penny piching st. Johns. No question this was a mistake, but was it bad judgment, blind loyalty to an old friend, or even a good decision gone horribly wrong. If it's either of the first 2, would question whether burning money on Richmond makes sense. Lavin set a precedent with a highly paid special assistant, but even Keady was a 6 time national coach of the year.

At Slice's salary should have been a slam dunk, home run of a hire. Some of the SJU brass is pretty upset.

This thread is going in so many weird directions that i am afraid if this process drags out any longer that Slice will be implicated for killing the girl in The Night of on HBO ( great show btw for those who haven't seen it)... but one thing that has to happen is a resolution and quick. This is now amateur hour with the way it is dragging out and while i am at it the fact that we are operating without a bonafied athletic director. For those who are speculating as to who will take the assistant coach job .. the answer is ... there is no job to take as Slice is still employed by the university. It also put us at a disadvantage with recruiting this summer . If you liked the hire or hated it we all have to agree that this has to end.

Surely some of our esteemed law school grads can sue him for breach of contract. And while you're at it pin him for 1st degree of that poor girl from "The Night Of!"

If we're been operating at a recruiting disadvantage this summer, can't wait to see what the staff will be doing at full capacity!!!!!

Probably all 3, but at the time Slice seemed like a slam dunk and no one had a clue that Matt was going to turn out to be the dynamo that he is. In hindsight, the 500K salary would have been much better spent on ex-coach who could mentor Chris, but you know what they say about hindsight.

Think we all should just leave this alone .It was a job that did not work out we all have had IT HAPPEN. Wish him good luck

Until the situation is resolved, both sides have parted, and we've hired an experienced associate head coach, there is nothing to move on from. It's at least a little more interesting than talking about an arena that won't be built, or games that haven't been played yet.

Yeah, only Lavin's wife is fair game.

She wasn't fair game either nor was Norm's.

You must have been on a six year vacation during Steve Lavin's tenure! Mary Ann started her St. John's career on the front page of the Daily News. Connie Jarvis was "deeply" involved in everything Jar head did and you are underestimating this situation.

How about the general idea that no one really wants to come to SJU when you can go play at non-commuter schools, schools with pristine campuses and state of the art facilities. Oh, and schools where students, faculty and administration actually give a damn about athletics and supporting their players.

You are brilliant Chris.
Lovett top 100
Yakwe top 100
Owens borderline 100
Richard top 40
Ahmed JC AA
Ponds top 35
Simon top 25 (2017)
Clark top 50 ( 2017)
Brown top 25 ( prior to arrest ) (2017)
Diakite top 25 (2018)

Not sure what team you follow Chris but it isn't SJU as in 1 year , I repeat 1 year , our short handed staff has done an absolutely remarkable job in recruiting.
Maybe time you find another team to root for.

This is a killer list and the question is: did Matt A reel in most, or even all, of these recruits? If so, and there is a $300k (or more) disparity in his pay vs Slice's then I think we know where the problem lies.

BTW, I really feel bad for Lou in this situation. Here is a man and legend who worked on basically a hand shake with St. John's and he now has to witness protracted legal maneuvers from people who think they are celebrities.

Why is Looie posing with Bo Dietl ?

IMHO even if things didn't work out, the original hiring of Slice was a great move. A coup. If a new head coach's salary was say $300k more we wouldn't have thought twice about it. Instead that extra $300k to a recognizable name that most considered one of the very best and from the marque program in recruiting the last several years, It helped make the statement that the new regime was serious and intent upon big time success. In a similar way that those that knew Lavin lacked certain skills bringing in certain assistants seemed to shore up areas where he was lacking and made the hire more palatable.
The FACT that we've had a superior recruiter during the same time who has kicked butt right out of the gate makes it all a net gain and all things considered WGAC about Slice now? Time to move on. Good move by Mullin to hire him. Good move to drop him when he wasn't going by Mullin's playbook despite any personal history.

What's your point? I have been a poster here since the original site. A business arrangement didn't work out. It happens but as usual when things don't go our way we get the "we stopped recruiting him", "we didn't need him anyway" "he really isn't that good", "so and so hates us", "it's his wife's/girlfriend's fault","the other team cheated", "he used us", etc.

How about Barry's role didn't turn out as he envisioned and was not happy about it . How about maybe Chris wasn't happy about a few things. Chris has it set-up the way he wants and the parties decided to part ways. As with any contract, negotiations are being done for the separation.

When he was hired everyone thought it was a great move and no one complained about the Contract. To lure him from one of the top programs in the country with a virtual unlimited budget you were going to have to pay if not overpay. It just didn't work out. It happens.

His replacement is already here and we are recruiting with the same number of people on the road as everyone else since the NCAA is allowing the DOB to recruit as he has the required certification and we are short one coach.
