SJU Transfer Targets/Possibilities

Per John Fanta: “Yes. I firmly maintain the Red Storm will still be adding another key piece.”

Tick, tick, tick .....

I would think this week should be the week he enters the portal, just graduated, now can really focus 100% on basketball decisions.

On a side note, I love John Fanta, the Big East is lucky to have him, it's very few people that cover CBB/College sports and show their love for it  as much as he does, Jon Rothstein may be the only person that has him beat.  He knows every team's roster inside and out in the Big East, he's very well researched.  A lot of people outside St. John's fans wouldn't even mention Wheeler as a key pick-up, but Fanta just mentioned him in a tweet, just shows he knows CMA's system and researched Wheeler enough to know he's a perfect fit, despite low numbers at Purdue.

amazing news, the key words being “ another key piece”. Over the last few years we have added many pieces but almost never key pieces. If we can add another proven scorer to the puzzle and go into the season with three proven offensive commodities we should be in an excellent position with Wusu, Wheeler, Smith, Soriano, Mathis rounding out the top 8, all of whom have various degrees of experience and 3 of the 5 having played in power conferences, with Pinzon, Traoré, Nywie and Stanley all adding nice size and toughness.
very excited to see who we add.

Alvarodo left Atlanta this morning to spend the next month training in Arizona. At this point he is focused on showing NBA teams that he deserves to be drafted. His goal at the present time, is to play in the League, not overseas or in college.

This seems like a pipe dream.

This Board doesn't need a 'pipe' to dream. /media/kunena/emoticons/smile.png

JA still not entering portal at this point and his NBA strategy, noted by Sterling, certainly precludes optimism for SJU. Hopefully staff finds the quality combo guard they need to optimize roster.

SJU never recruited him as noted, but Junior College All-American Rivaldo Soares committed to Oregon

Maybe the key piece that Fanta is talking about isn’t Alvarado?
Possibly.  Zach also hinted at someone last month as well, I assumed they both meant Alvarado.

Also, I think that list we had of combo guards they were recruiting last week all but 1 of them has committed somewhere else.  The staff moves quietly so I'm sure they are on other players that we just don't know about yet.

Jacob Young’s name was also out there a month ago as SJU possibility , but most thought he would go pro somewhere

If we are in the market for a short point guard, which I don't think we are, Glen Anderson from Brooklyn Collegiate and Maryland Eastern Shore entered portal. Numbers are paltry, but I will add that I was hoping for him over McGriff.

That would be pretty disappointing.  We don’t need a replacement fir McGriff, we need a replacement for Dunn.

You don't think some combination of Smith, Mathis, Pinzon, and Wusu aren't filling what Dunn gave us?

He's a good kid and I'm rooting for him, but I haven't thought of him since he left.

Dunn averaged 4 assists. Smith and Mathis had more TO’s than assists. We need another playmaker IMO.

Putting Champs' return aside (that is obviously huge) we definitely need a combo guard who can run the point w/o turning the ball over a bunch when Posh sits and shoot the three. I don't see anyone we have currently filling that dual role. Granted Dunn couldn't shoot the three but he could run the point and we lost three of our better three point shooters in Greg, Duke & Cole. We are still short one key guy to make some noise imho.

Even more, when Posh is on the court he loves to give the ball up early and has no issue playing off others. Harassing opponent PGs full length of the court is also a full time job in itself. Posh will need a break even when he’s not actually off the floor getting a break. That’s what a combo/playmaker can bring.

I might be one of the few who would actually be fine with wusu getting some minutes at the point. But him being the primary backup there isn’t best case entering the season. Staff will take care of it I’m sure.

I'm usually a numbers doesn't tell the whole story type of guy... but his numbers are horrible for a starting PG.  He played in 26.6 MPG and only averaged 3.7 PPG and 2.1 APG.  And he's a 55% free throw shooter.  He's probably dropping down to D2.
