SJU Transfer Targets/Possibilities

So, from going on twitter and reading this thread, here's an updated list of current targets that staff has made contact with.  If I left anyone off or if anyone knows of any new targets let me know and I'll edit the post.  Figured it would be nice to have one post so everyone knows who the current targets are.

Jack Nolan - Washington U (D3) 6'1 CG (1 Year eligibility) 18.5 PPG / 2.7 RPG / 2.3 APG
John Michael Wright - High Point - 6'1 CG (3 Years eligibility) - 20.7 PPG / 5.2 RPG / 3.2 APG
Te'Jon Lucas - Milwaukee - 6'2 CG (1 Year eligibility) - 14.9 PPG / 4.6 RPG / 5.8 APG
Deng Dut - Southern Idaho (JUCO) - 6'4 CG - (3 Years eligibility) 14.8 PPG / 5.5 RPG / 5.2 APG
Shane Dezonie - Brewster Academy (HS) - 6'4 SG - (4 Years eligibility)

It seems like they're all guys who outplayed the level of competition they were up against.  The problem is that none of them were playing against remotely Big-East level competition.

Something of a contrast with the incoming players, who did play against high-major competition (with the exception of Stef Smith, who's a known quantity).

I'd think they're all back-up plans if a difference-making guard who's a known quantity cannot be had.

If you made me pick blindly, I'd go with 6'4 and 3 years or 4 years of eligibility, though.

Staff clearly kicking a lot of tires astutely, biding time, but obviously have their preferences. Hopefully one of them comes to fruition as conditions evolve. As Panther noted, no sense at jumping on a player who does not move the team betterment needle.

Unrelated, Penn State transfer Izaiah Brockington committed to Iowa State.

He doesn't have the stats of the guys above but fwiw, Aaron Estrada, 6'4" CG is followed by DeMeo and returns the favor. Transferred originally from St. Peters; played 12mpg at Oregon last year; modest #s.

Oops. Thanks Paultz. I 'knew' that but had forgotten./media/kunena/emoticons/smile.png

To me we need a high level role player coming off the bench to give Posh some mins and most importantly someone to come in here that is comfortable with that role. High level, high intensity kid who WANTS to be part of this program. These targets seem to fill that mold, although don't know much about them besides the stats.

Interesting that they think he is a lock to go to Kentucky if he enters the portal
Kentucky station, so yeah. Ky has been however been mentioned in rumor mill before for Alvarado. Hopefully they sign someone else soon. Articles like this support notion he may go portal though, despite taking his time.

DeZonie committed this morning to Vanderbilt.   Dont think we ever were really in play for him anyway but we can cross him off the list.

Never like to see a key target linked to Kentucky.  $limball Calapari can $ell ice to an E$kimo.  The good news however is Davion Mintz, their starting PG is likely to return from what I was reading.  He's mid-way through the grad program and isn't on any draft boards and rumor is he wants to get his masters.  Also, Kentucky fans seem to think they got a legit shot with Tyty Washington.  And they are on a host of other guard transfers.

Time may actually be on our side the longer Alvarado holds out on the portal.  Jose is without a doubt the biggest realistic get for St. John's so we can hold out for him, and he'd still come in and be a starter.  Kentucky, has bigger or equivalent options so as soon as they land a 5-star or another big time guard transfer they are more than likely done and have their main guys set, as Cal is only going to play around 7 guys.

I agree......the longer this plays out, the less likely Alvarado ends up at Kentucky.

It's interesting to see Calipari looking at different types of players this year.  After years of loading the roster, almost exclusively, with 5-Star high school recruits, he will now have some more experienced transfers (i.e. CJ Fredrick).  In the end, it may make them more dangerous.

We need a combo guard that can back up posh and could shoot.Alvarado would be perfect. But I think the odds are against us.

unless he wants to go back home.

Kentucky is Kentucky. Just gotta hope he misses home.

Paultz, I know you and others “in the know” have speculated that Alvarado would be in play for us should he decide to transfer.  Is that speculation based on the fact that Alvarado is a local kid with local ties whose handlers have said nice things about us or something more?

Initial rumor was that if he entered portal,  SJU was possible, but Kentucky would be a challenge. Coming home to finish career here was a plus for SJU obviously, as well as solid relationship this regime has with people Alvarado respects. As I have often said, step one is Jose entering portal and I would be surprised if he doesn’t. Then, landing spots will be clearer IMO. For now, I’ll remain modestly hopeful, but realistic.

Got it, thanks

I may be in the minority but I don't think Jose to St. John's is likely to happen as it is not in his best interests,  He and Posh are two peas in a pod (look a their stats as a comparison) and they are both point guards.  Jose has been playing an average of 35 minutes per game for 4 years.  It is more beneficial for Jose to be lead PG for his pro ambitions and I don't believe CMA can guarantee such as Posh is our PG.

CMA played a lesser PG next to posh for 30 minutes a game last year.
