SJU Transfer Targets/Possibilities

High Point sophomore guard John-Michael Wright has been receiving tons of interest since entering the transfer portal. Wright averaged 20.7 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.2 assists this season. As of now he has heard from Georgia, Oklahoma, Florida Gulf Coast, Northwestern, College of Charleston, St. Johns, Utah State, and Stanford while having in depth conversations with Georgia and Northwestern. As of now he plans on making a list and making a decision within a couple of weeks.

From the article...

"I don't want any handouts but I think I deserve some type of commitment from them as well based on the season I just had.”

I've never heard a kid actually say that in an interview before, sounds like he's being up front and honest on wanting a coach to commit to him starting or playing a lot.  I don't see that flying with CMA, only type of commitment he's going to give him is if he plays hard and is one of the better players he'll be on the court.  Of course, with interviews things can get taken out of context sometime, so maybe he didn't mean it like that.

Jacob Young, formerly of Rutgers and in the portal, would be very solid addition if he chooses not to earn money somewhere.

Any idea why he's leaving Rutgers, team seemed like a perfect fit for him.  He was like the heart and soul of that team, I loved his energy.

At the present time, we have 11 scholarship players. I believe that the staff will take their time before offering the last one or two scholarships. Unless a player who would be considered a difference maker becomes available, they would be taking a player just for the sake of taking him. Even in Coach Anderson's system, probably only 9 players will be in the rotation.

Now, if Jose Alvarado wanted to come here, that would be different. Looking forward to seeing how it plays out.

Any vibe as to Alvarado's lean? Got excited when he was a fleeting avatar.   Given that team is still reaching out to multiple guard candidates leads me to believe maybe he is focused elsewhere.  Feel that team needs Champ and another ball handler to enter upper echelon of division

I am going to interpret the phrase "not earn money" liberally to apply to Young electing to transfer to certain universities in addition to pursuing professional opportunities.

Don't overcomplicate it

I was half joking, but recruiting is seldom “uncomplicated” in this day and age.

When is the deadline to enter the portal?

It is July 1st for this year.

However, moving forward, it will be May 1st for all Fall and Winter sports.

Guys the portal is all year round.  Anyone at anytime can decide to transfer.  It is not like after 7/1 no one is allowed to transfer.

The issue is who can qualify for the one time transfer without a sit year penalty.  And that is when 7/1 and then going forward 5/1 comes into play.

But the portal itself has no date limits.
