SJU Transfer Targets/Possibilities

We should all realize that this team is not bringing in someone to play the same position as Pinzon.

Vince Cole

Vince just was not a good fit here. In my opinion his role at this level is "spot up shooter."

There were a few problems with that here. One is that we do not run a halfcourt offense that lends itself to swinging the ball or kicking it out to spot up shooters (and in my view that's a deficiency in our offense). Another is that either because he thought he could or because he understood that the system demanded it, Vince tried to put the ball on the floor and create for himself which perhaps he could do in JUCO but did not have the physical skills to do at this level.

All of which should be instructive in terms of the skill set of whoever we add

JPM114 tells me to disregard Oregon #s and Estrada could help Johnnies

He dropped 18 against St. John's a couple years ago, including shooting 67% from the field and 50% from 3 that night.   Former MAAC FOY.

And looks JPM114 is correct, he basically didn't even play for Oregon, only appeared in 9 games, didn't appear in any games the entire months of February and March.  Oregon only plays 7-8 guys and their starters were upperclassmen who all play 30+ MPG.  Oregon had some really good players that would start on other high major teams, that didn't have a big role on that team, like Amuri Hardy, Chandler Lawson, and Franck Kepnang, they all had similar numbers as Estrada.

Edit:  Also his decision is coming tomorrow.

Estrada put up decent numbers for St. Peters as a frosh in 20 mpg, averaging 8 ppg and shooting 34% from three and 87% from the line while second on the team in assists. Good height at 6'4".

Looks like would be an excellent pickup for us.  From a high level D1 program, has a few years left and is local NJ kid.  Would be very good signing.  Kid can play.

Big jump from St. Peter's to Oregon.  #'s not impressive at either stop. Mikey Dixon was FOY in MAAC too.

Seems like he might help, but I wonder if he's wary of high-major PT gridlock, and would he be eligible under the new NCAA rules to play immediately since he already transferred 1x and looks like did not sit out?

Wouldn’t be 100% with new rule but seems likely this year it won’t matter.

Final three in hunt for Estrada after freshman year were Creighton, Syracuse & Oregon. Kid was playing somewhat regularly in games between 12/17 to  1/23 when Oregon had second COVID pause, then stopped playing completely.

It'd be fine if he sat out & learned the system, but then we'd still need a combo guard for '21 - '22...or are you saying the NCAA will be free with waivers due to Covid?

Seems like Estrada would be a useful addition from a depth standpoint but not the difference-maker we were hoping for

Chicago, would most likely be cleared to play but not already guaranteed like 1st time transfers.

Agreed, I could see Estrada making the rotation and being a contributor.  However, if they add him and that's it and they hold the last scholarship, it'll be a little disappointing.  Zach commented on twitter and just simply said "They talked to him" sounds like it may not be anything serious, a lot of guys are going to start putting out final lists, doesn't necessarily means staff is still actively recruiting them.

Hard pass for me.

That's another thing that makes this pick-up a little less attractive as well, you never know with the NCAA, we were told Nyiwe was likely to get waiver to be immediately eligible at the mid-term and it never happened.  Rasheem Dunn was suppose to get a waiver to be immediately eligible a couple years ago and he got denied and had to miss a few games before he got his waiver as well.  It's worth the risk to the other 3 mid-majors on his list, but IMO it's not really worth it for St.John's.  We'll see what happens tomorrow.
