SJU Transfer Targets/Possibilities

Question to John Fanta: “If Champagne comes back who is higher going into next year St. John’s or Uconn”?

Answer: I’ll vote St. John’s. Red Storm are not done in the transfer portal either

Gotta luv our Staff is relentless in its pursuit to complete the roster. So many names may make the eyes blink but leagues better than too few. St. John's basketball is in good hands in this era where the 4-year player has been T-Rex'd.

Is Alvarado to St. John's the worst kept secret in college basketball right now?  Too many people that would know seem to think it's going to happen.

Someone please remind  me  how this rumor started and why are we so sure it’s got legs?

I asked the same question, anybody that knows or kinda knows ain't answering though :).  But, all the guys that are credible on here think there's a chance... plus Zach Braziller has hinted at it, then the John Fanta hinted as well today with that post I quoted, so it seems like a real possibility.

My best guess is he's a local kid, wanted to play for St. John's out of high school, and he's probably told people around him he's considering entering the portal and playing one last year closer to home.  The big wait is to see how serious he is, he has history at GA Tech, so if he's willing to enter the portal and leave them, we know those rumors have serious legs.  Again, this is just me guessing out loud.

The only way Alvarado comes to the Johnnies is if he is told he will start.

Why would they have to tell the ACC DPOY he's starting?  I'm pretty sure the kid has common sense and can see he'd easily be the best or 2nd best guard on the team.

Yeah whether or not somebody of his caliber would start does not seem like an issue needing clarification

I imagine that if for some weird reason he needed to hear the words and CMA makes it a habit of not saying those words, Van would pull the kid aside and give him a wink and a nod. There's no way in hell he wouldn't start. And we could kiss goodbye every future local talented guy who wants to come back home if Alvarado didn't get the starting nod and a ton of minutes.

And while there may be some overlap, I don't think Paultz and Fordham have the same sources. So if they are both hearing the same thing, it's definitely circulating among those plugged in to the NYC scene.

Yea, I don't know on what planet you bring a player of his caliber in and not start him, I highly doubt he would have to hear that, elite players know they are starting they don't have to ask.  CMA's not going to be like "Yea, I know you're a 5th year senior, all conference player, DPOY, a top 100 player on draft boards, and can go to any school in the country and start, but we're thinking you come here and back-up Posh for 10 MPG for funsies."

Maybe it's just me but I thought he was joking in the he has to be told he will start comment.

We can’t give him a signed contract that he will start.how about let’s see him play ,interact with his team mates obviously he will start but he has to live up to it on the court

Starting is irrelevant.  frankly, I'm surprised its even an issue amongst fans anymore.
If you offered any player the chance to start and play 10-15 min a game, or to come of the bench and play 25-30 min, there isn't a player on the planet that would complain about not starting.
Not saying that is the case in this scenario, only that "starting" is far less relevant than "minutes played".

Could be an interesting week or so one way or other.

Starting is probably not irrelevant to any Player ! It’s been the gold standard for like , ever .  A Player like Alvarado coming here would expect to start every game , unless injured .  Would Posh be happy being told , “ your not Starting but , you will play a lot of minutes ?”  Hardly .  While I haven’t seen Alvarado a lot , I would say he could be a Pre-Season BE selection . Maybe even a BE POY candidate .  If he comes , he starts and plays 30 plus minutes a game .  And , why not ?

Hypothetically if Alvarado transferred to St. John’s he played 37.1 minutes a game last year. It won’t be easy keeping him or Posh off the court.

Regardless if it’s Alvarado or another guard, Posh’s play keeps himself off the floor plenty. What we all love is his non stop motor, that leads to fouls and some bumps and bruises. Plus, the pace we play at isn’t built for guys getting 35+ minutes.

I Alvarado comes here, him and Posh are our starting backcourt. Alvarado probably plays off the ball as he is the better shooter of the two. When either one is out of the game the other just handles the ball. It should work very well. If we have Posh , Alvarado and Mathis on the floor at the same time, no one will be able to match the defensive pressure that they will exert.
