Caught up with Georgia Tech's Jose Alvarado, local guy from Christ the King: “[St. John’s] recruited me and then they didn’t want me. It’s a business. I didn’t take it personal. I don’t have anything to prove to them. They know how good I am.” #sjubb

Ouch... I don't think I ever heard a kid be that honest about a recruiting situation.  I love that though.

IMO, it doesn't make sense for a 23 year old fringe draft pick to transfer, matter of fact if I was him I'd stay in the draft, another year in college and coming out at 24 isn't really going to help his stock at all, it may even hurt it.  And I don't think he will be drafted this year, but I would think he has a pretty good shot at picking up a 2-way contract.  With that said, obviously I'm not in the know on his situation, guys on here that have been credible think there's a chance and Zach has hinted at a surprise homerun pick-up, so I'm hoping for the best.  If he enters the portal it gets really interesting.

Am I correct that even if he enters the portal and chooses us, he would/could still test the NBA waters and go pro?  In other words, his transferring to us does not guarantee that he will ultimately suit up for us next year.

I’m sure he would first enter the portal. Then when NBA decision gets made would choose a school there after if he decided to play one more year of college. Right now he’s in the draft but not in the transfer portal. Of course the talent that he is, I’m sure a college coach would risk taking him on even if he still kept his name in the draft.

Here's a question for you guys. Say we are lucky enough to land Alvarado. We can assume a majority of the minutes at the 1 and 2 spot will be locked up, probably 30+ a game.

What does this mean for Smith and Mathis? Im sure they decided to come here with the notion they'd get good minutes.

Further, what does this mean for Pinzon and Wusu? It will eat into their minutes as well.

Think someone posted before if they go 3 guard - that would be 120 min.  So, even if Posh/Alvardo got ~30 each.. That would still leave ~ 60 total between the four others (Wusu, Smith, Mathis, Pinzon)...  My guess is Pinzon or Smith would get the short end there,,

Good problem to think about, but only a wish at this stage.

Playing 3 guards for majority of the game. Last year we had close to 30 minutes from Dunn. 25 for Williams. 20 for Cole. And wusu still got his 20 a game. That’s 3 spots right there for Mathis, Smith, and hopefully Jose.

In a normal world it would be good year to red shirt Pinzon, but it isn’t. Staff was actively seeking  an additional player who could play some PG and score anyway, so that there would be minutes impact in any event. I’d leave it to staff to figure out. Not a bad problem to have if you want to put best possible team out there. Hopefully this comes to fruition and will be a great opportunity season.

I think it would hurt Pinzon more than anybody.  If Alvarado is on the roster, it probably means CMA goes with a 5 guard rotation.  So, that means unless Pinzon beats out one of the transfers, he'd likely be the "McGriff" of next year, meaning he mostly plays during cleanup minutes or filling in during injuries, which honestly as a 3-star on a really good team, it's not a bad deal not to play much your first year, just getting experience should be the focus.

And as far as the rest of the guards... you have 3 guard spots, 40 MPG available at each guard spot, that's 120 guard minutes.  You figure Posh and Alvarado take 30 MPG like you mentioned.  That's 60 minutes.  That leaves 60 minutes for Wusu, Smith, and Mathis.  So around 20 MPG for each of them, which isn't bad.  Also, CMA does like to run small ball at times, so there will possibly be a few forward minutes per game for Wusu.

Hopefully he would do that.  Rayjon Tucker a couple years ago did the opposite, he entered the portal, choose a school, then made a decision to stay in the draft.  I remember because he was a transfer from Little Rock and everybody in the country wanted him, I was thinking that sucks for all those schools to waste time recruiting him and he just stayed in the the draft.

Of course, and as sju fan that will probably end up happening ;) but like I said, with him it’s a risk I think plenty of coaches would be willing to take. My guess is if he’s announcing a transfer he’s probably pretty sure on leaving the draft. Like you said, on the surface, not many reasons for him to transfer from GT unless it’s something outside of playing ball.

I wouldn't worry about Coach finding minutes for players.  He is absolutely willing to go 11 deep, keep the pedal to the medal for 40 minutes, and to play small lineups.

Jose is 23 and at that age it is probably best for him to move on to the draft or an overseas job of play for pay.

This recent discussion about widescale portal transfers is a real problem for high school seniors.  They sign a national LOI in the early or April signing periods based on what school wants them and if they are a fit.  Then along comes transferees from the portal and it completely upends their reason for choosing a school as the get "recruited over".  In fairness to HS seniors maybe the national LOI date should be moved to June 1st so they can better evaluate a school's needs versus what they bring.

While this is all exciting, won't the typical group of Blue Bloods be all over this kid?

Unless the factor of playing at home far and away eclipses all other factors, I'm not ready to say I love our chances going to head to head with Kentucky and whoever else for reasons that are all well documented.

have to hope he grew up a SJU fan and wants to stay home and help bring us back to prominence.
Regarding Pinzon coach could bring him along slowly and have a nice upperclassman later.

I think there would still be a ton of minutes because Alvarado would slide to pg when posh comes out.  Then when posh returns, youd sub out alvarado.  So there would be a lot of minutes to be played at the 2 and 3 spots.

I'm not an insider and admit i'm not analyzing this rationally.  Unfortunately i'm so jaded from all of our years of ineptitude that I literally won't believe something like this can happen to us until it actually happens.  And by that I mean literally gets announced as part of the starting lineup on opening night.

Do  not see us playing 5 guards esp with our Ht now. Basketball is a business the best players see the maj of the mins Pinzon ,
could outplay the transfers .I have high expectations for him The balance act is getting your best players to play and role players to help with contributions toward winning.it’s up to the staff to improve role players to take the place of those ahead plus keeping everyone happy. But recruiting over is an unfortunate part of the game thus transfers

Agree Pinzon will surprise many! Really nice highlights in that game against Siera Canyon!

I don't see Alvarado leaving Georgia Tech to go to a blue blood but anything is possible. I am guessing that he would want to come back to NY for a reason.

While COVID will hopefully wind down soon, it could take another season for all of the International leagues to get back to normal. I doubt some of the posters would be so optimistic unless there is something to this. That something could change in an instant so I understand the skepticism.

Of course Alvarado could enter portal and be courted by elite programs, nothing is a lock obviously in college hoops. That said, if  he enters portal, I believe we are in play. In the meantime staff is not putting all eggs in one basket.
