SJU Transfer Targets/Possibilities

As of  6 PM on Sunday, the Verbal Commits  list https://www.verbalcommits.com/transfers/2021 had 1391 Transfers.

On Sunday only one new transfer was added.  Eleven transfers announced their new school.

On Saturday, five new transfers were added to the list and seventeen transfers announced their new school.

At some point, the staff must decide whether to accept the best available candidate, or hope for a decommitment from another school, or simply carry the open scholarship over for next year.  My guess is that this week coming will wind down the current transfer frenzy.  By my count, SJU has two available scholarships for the coming season and one more for the following season.  I would be satisfied using one now and leaving one vacant for someone that comes available.

There is still plenty of time and there are still a ton of kids to kick the tires on.

With four solid gets in transfer mania so far, no reason to doubt the next one won’t be a positive as well. Additionally it appears strategy is to leave some roster flexibility until NBA draft guys opt in or out seems smart. So far, well played effort by staff with continued good fortune very possible.

Why not take the best combo guard available now and save the last ship for a Hail Mary on a stud like Alvarado.  I don’t see why it’s an either or proposition.

I will caution fans that our last 2 ships very well could be role-players.  We aren’t going to land all studs as there will be no PT for any of them.

Really, who other then Posh and Champagnie is so good  that a stud would be deterred from coming? You may  be right that we aren’t going to land  any studs, but lack of PT ain’t the reason.

It certainly will be a reason.  Eliminate full time starters with posh, champs.  We have a plethora of PF’s now as well as a center.  Potential PT is going to be winding down  in a potential recruit’s mind.  Even at SG, we just landed a 3-year starter from a Big 10 program.  I could see us landing one real good one if some top notch kid thinks we will easily win the SG spot but even that won’t be easy.

Right, but your comment suggested that we couldn't land any "studs" bc of a lack of playing time.  Other than Posh an Chamapagnie, there is nobody on our roster that would  give a "stud" pause from coming.  And that includes the kid we just landed from Rutgers.

Didn’t say we couldn’t, but we might not as we have some depth at a few spots.

Disagree.  We still need a guard that can handle the ball and shoot. That player will play healthy minutes.

I think you are both right. It COULD be a role player if they like someone enough to take him and other targets don't pan out. But I think they are still hunting for a starter, ideally someone who has shown they can score at whatever level they are at. They won't have to be the primary option here, so that will help with transition from mid-major if that's indeed where the kid comes from.

Stef Smith does those things.  Not saying we can’t use more but he’s quite good.

I agree with you I think regardless of what happens they'll be fine as far as ball handlers.  Stef Smith is a combo guard and Pinzon can play some back-up PG if needed as well.  Posh will probably be playing 30-34 MPG, so it's not many back-up PG minutes available anyways.

With that said, I think they'll go for a home run here with the next scholarship, and that person is likely to be a combo guard that can handle the ball. If that doesn't work out, I could see them adding a late JUCO/High School combo guard that's a project just to have 12 scholarship guys on the roster. I don't see them using both remaining scholarships unless it's 2 homerun players.  I just don't think they would waste 2 more scholarships on role/project players, when they already have 3 freshman coming in that are projects, they can save that last scholarship and likely get an upgrade when players start transferring out at the mid-term.

While the rush to enter the portal has subsided, players still have about ten days (until the May 1st) to enter the portal and be eligible for next season (https://www.cbssports.com/coll...hes-and-teams-will-navigate-uncertain-waters/).  So it is possible that someone of interest is still on the fence and has not decided yet.

As for those looking into early entree to the NBA draft, players have until 11:59 PM on May 30th to declare for the draft and 5PM on July 19th to withdraw (https://www.nba.com/news/2021-nba-draft-process-dates-official-release). So I wouldn’t bet on an early decision by Julian or Alvarado since the NBA combine doesn’t happen until June 21st - 27th which means the invites for the combine probably won’t go out until the beginning of June.

While I would like another ball/handler and shooter (they can be one or two of the same), I don’t see a need to rush to fill the last two slots now until the portal and NBA withdrawal deadlines pass unless there is a “must have” out there right now or one becomes available between now and the two deadline dates mentioned previously.

I would love Jaylen Minnett....then save the last scholly and not use it unless Justin or Jose come back and wanna join up to make a deep run in the tourney.
Appears they are not actively recruiting him now, but we’ll see if that changes

I think we’ll see a lot of names and tire kicking for combo guard, but obviously Alvarado would be the people’s choice should he formally enter portal. He announced for NBA obviously, but not for portal, unless I missed it. Dream on Paultz! :)
