SJU Transfer Targets/Possibilities

Silva is very good.  You’re right though Moose, I’d like Soriano because he would potentially be here a few more years.  I also think we probably don’t want to crowd the PF/undersized center spot where we have Wheeler, Nywie, Stanley and Traore.  We already will certainly be much bigger and stronger up front this year.  Soriano the only one of the group who’s a near 7-footer and a true center which would provide us with something different than we already have.

Watching some clips on Toro/Soriano from the A10:

Toro excelled at cutting to the basket and scoring. He rebounded well in traffic. Tipped the ball to himself. Was able to back a guy down but didn’t overpower them in the post. Could hit a jump shot if left open.

soriano looks much stronger. He used his body to back guys down. Finishes at the rim. Blocks/challenges shots. Comfortable in the paint. Reminds me of an Old school big man

Nothing earth shattering just some info

Whichever center/big man who comes here will have to play respectable minutes.   If it is perceived that big men don't get playing time or develop in our system, then it will continue to be difficult to recruit them.

Apologize in advance, but who is the player Silva being referred to?  I did not see him on here.

Yesterday & obviously Adam’s was hired to keep kids there

”LUBBOCK, Texas — At his introductory press conference Tuesday, new Texas Tech men’s basketball head coach Mark Adams said that forward Marcus Santos-Silva and three other Red Raiders want to return to Tech next season.Santos-Silva, Avery Benson, Chibuzo Agbo and Clarence Nadolny all attended the press conference.“We’ve got a great nucleus back and these guys all want to be back,” Adams said Tuesday while gesturing at the attending players.”

Help  Felipe! :)  For those inclined to consider HS ratings strongly, note comment re his prep year rating. Coach Quinn at Thomas Moore is also an excellent coach who I am sure refined Joel’s game.

Soriano averaged 10.4 points and 9.2 rebounds and shot 54.5 percent from the field in 2020-21 for the Rams. Those were all career highs for the 6-foot-11, 250-pound forward, who spent a year at St. Thomas More Prep (Conn.) after graduating from Archbishop Stepinac (N.Y.) in 2018.Soriano teamed up with former Illinois guard Alan Griffin to win a state championship at Stepinac in their senior season.

The Yonkers, N.Y., native was a three-star recruit following his prep year and chose Fordham over other offers from Stony Brook, Iona, Old Dominion, La Salle, Manhattan and Florida International.Soriano also has international experience. He played for the Dominican Republic at the FIBA Americas U18 Championship in 2018 in Canada and averaged 8.7 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.5 assists in six games.

Exactly what we need, for the times when we need that.

If you want to feel old, consider that Jere Quinn coached Charles Minlend.

If you want to feel really old, those were the days we beat out UConn for recruits.

Tim O’Toole is lead recruiter for Pitt in the Joel Soriano chase. Former SJU radio guy and HC at Fairfield, Tim btw is a Stepinac grad as is Joel.

per Zach B

Fordham transfer Joel Soriano had a Zoom with Pittsburgh this morning, per source. Has one scheduled with St John’s tomorrow. #sjubb

Two new schools involved: Georgetown and Marquette

Hopefully he would like to stay local as Fordham had mentioned he had heard.  Plenty of big schools involved.

We need some good news on the recruiting / roster front. Strong high major interest is worrisome but hopefully CMA & Staff prove this is 'home' to Soriano.

per zags

/@joelsoriano22 on @StJohnsBBall ahead of his Zoom Friday:

‘St. John’s has been recruiting me hard. We have a zoom meeting tomorrow and so far their coaching staff have been great with the process’

As far as I know, this staff has yet to win a major publicized recruiting battle.  Not overly optimistic, but hope to be pleasantly surprised.

Always the optimist.

Not a game changer, but a quality piece in a  position we desperately need.

For SJU, just having a big man that stays in the post IS a game-changer.

Amen! Sensing a great shot, we’ll see soon enough. All about closing but a lot of folks, including Stepinac HC, have noted how aggressive staff has been to make it happen. I’ll be the optimist on this one.

Really?  Because a certain team in South Orange recruited Posh Alexander as an outright priority for 3 years, only to have Anderson come in at the 11th hour and get him.  And it destroyed that certain team's season last year because they had to gamble on a kid (Aiken) who was always injured, and when he went down the replacement was a former walk-on who just transferred to Monmouth, because the kid who they landed instead of Posh couldn't get on the court.  I'd call that us winning a recruiting battle that was pretty public.
