Fordham transfer Joel Soriano tells me he has heard from both St. John's head coach Mike Anderson and an assistant. #sjubb

If CMA has reached out to him personally this early, they really want him.  He usually let's the assistants do their thing then he comes in and closes the deal when they feel they have a really good chance.

From what I am told he wants to stay close to home and wants to play in the BE.

Pretty hard to see this ending anywhere else.  If SJU wants him I think they get him.

Joel Soriano on two of schools pursuing him, also spoke about Oklahoma and South Carolina

St. John's:
“They've been recruiting me hard as well and they tell me how they need a big man like me and how I could help the team a lot. They also say that with the guards they have in the backcourt, I would fit in really well. I would come in to play and work hard and they talked about their culture and identity which was good to hear.”

Creighton: “I've known the coaches since high school, so we were are kind of cool. We talked about how I'm doing and that they would love to have me. They want to get on more calls with my family and my mentor so its been going well with them as well and they are recruiting me hard. We also talked about their Sweet 16 run and how some of the guys are leaving but they still have pieces to go make another run.”

Great to hear staff is all over Soriano. True big with back to basket moves, mobility and soft touch don’t grow on trees.  Hope CMA grabs this kid.  Nice that he has 3 years eligibility too and has plenty of major schools after him.  Get it done.

Curious how this would effect us as we also offered Matos?

There's another expression: a bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush.

I'm guessing they'll only take one.  They just added 6'9 wheeler.  Plus they already have Nyiwe, Stanley, Drissa, and Champagnie all at the forward positions.  I don't think they'll have 7 forwards on the roster for 2 spots.  They'll need some save some scholarships for guard/wing depth which is really lacking right now.

With that said there is a dilemma here, Soriano said in the 247 article he's going to take about a month before he commits, if Matos wants to commit sooner is the skill difference that great for them to wait and risk losing Matos to someone else?  The big competition for Matos looked like Seton Hall, but they just added another 6'9 kid this morning, so you'd have to like St. John's chances if they wanted him.  It'll be interesting to see what they do.

Hope you're right, fordham. Competition seems intense and he has links to both Creighton and SC.

Pretty sure we kicked the tires on Matos before, so we'll see how far this goes. Not sure how hard we kicked last time around.

Bayron Matos was a 3* out of HS, ranked 219th re 247Sports. Joel Soriano was a 2* and ranked  401. Bayron weighed 240lbs-ish in HS...Soriano 190lbs...Bayron must've given his pounds to Joel./media/kunena/emoticons/smile.png
Bayron had some high major interest; Soriano mid-major.

I think Soriano looks like the truer post-player and has more upside with size and nice touch.  I thin wi the some work, Soriano can get his body in top shape and be difficult to stop in the post if you get the ball to him.  3 years eligibility are nice and give time to grow as a player.  It seems to me that Matos is more like Stanley who we already have to bring along.

So who is better Nyiwe or Soriano?

Totally different.  Soriano is bigger and more of a post-player.  Nywie is a gazelle and runs court like Moore and is maybe even more athletic.  Both would be a nice combo.  Two styles and can play together or mix it up.  Adding a pure post player would change our abilities as a team and having more than one big would be a look we haven’t had in an extremely long time. Similar to comparing UConn’s Akok to Sanogo.

I think we need Soriano more than Matos, but probably have a better shot with Bayron than we do Joel.
And this time, Soriano seems more likely to draw high major interest.
Hope we can get this big guy. Looks good to me.

Another gem from you know who mentioned in that article.

Personally I would prefer Silva first, then Soriano, then Matos.
Only issue with Silva is we are going to have a lot of Sr's/final year players next year.  That will give posters a coronary about the turnover again going into 22.

By now we are used to it.
