SJU Transfer Targets/Possibilities

FWIW  coming out of high school, 247 had Toro was ranked #402 and Soriano ranked #401. And while I know rankings aren't everything, just found it coincidental how closely they were ranked coming out of high school. Almost eerily close.

Glass half full. Soriano was closer to being ranked the #1 player in the class than Toro

Refuse to draw any conclusions until I see how the #403 ranked kid in last years class played ;)

One more Toro/Soriano comparison. Stats per 40 minutes for each in their final year in the A-10:

Toro: 14 Points and 15 rebounds
Soriano: 16 points and 14 rebounds

You guys can make what you wish out of these stats, I'm just sharing them.

All one has to do is look at the bigs that UConn had groomed under Calhoun to see.  Guys like Voskuhl, Hilton, Thabeet, Travis Knight, etc.  Quitw a few were big, raw kids coming in and were big contributors by the end. I’m not saying we are UConn and it’s not to compare their respective rankings. but it reminds me of one of those types.

This kid is exactly what we could use up front when we play big teams.  I don’t know if we can land him, but sju fabs should be very happy if we could land a big 7-footer like this who is skilled and can run the court and doesn’t fancy himself a small forward.

Toro's last year at GW he had 2 games early in the year against Howard and American where we went postal.  Double doubles and over 20 points scored in each game.  Both the teams were bad.  If you take out those outliers I wonder how much that drops his averages.  Soriano seems more consistent.

Also in terms of rankings.  I don't think there is any difference between 175 and 400.  At a certain point names are just being listed.

What you failed to mention about that per 40 minute stat comparison is Soriano was a starter playing against the other teams starting unit in his minutes and playing in crunch time in on the floor close games, Toro was a back up, probably playing against other back ups and playing in garbage minutes, so you can't compare their per 40 minute stats simply because they both played in the A-10  and say they put up similar stats, that's deceiving information, and I guarantee you no college coach would go by those numbers to determine who would be more productive, and I guarantee Soriano will be way more sought after than Toro was.

I think Soriano can help more than Roberts and Toro combined. The key is to get better. And since total studs don't seem to care about us, any incremental improvement is welcomed. He's not replacing what Moore could give us next season, but anything to chip away at that loss is a big plus too.

And as mentioned before, if this gets us in good with Stepinac, it's a good thing. The top programs lately are probably LuHi, OSL, Stepinac, and CtK, which has a coach who seems to like us now.

I saw Soriano play several games this year. Initially I was impressed but more I saw, I did not see him as a Big East player.  Good size but seemed to be somewhat slow and immobile with basically one move back to basket with a baby hook that missed quite a bit.

May fit somewhere at higher level, but I don't see his game fitting with CMA style.

Oklahoma St., Johns, Oklahoma, Illinois, Pittsburgh, Creighton, South Carolina, Virginia Tech, Penn State and VCU has reached out to Fordham transfer Joel Soriano a source tells @247Sports.

Averaged 10.4 points and 9.2 rebounds this season.

Nice list yet some of our fans are ready to thumb their noses at him which given our failure at securing the services of a big I find quite confounding. Apparently those posters have never heard of the phrase beggars can't be choosers (not that I feel Soriano would be a settle for pick up). Hey but maybe Lew Alcindor is about to walk through that door.

I knew he would get a lot of big names reaching out to him, not too many walking double/double 6'11 kids growing on trees.  Glad to see staff is pursing, he'd for sure fill a need.

I did not get the Toro comparisons at all.  Their recruitment difference in going to be apples to oranges.

You must be easily confounded then /media/kunena/emoticons/wink.pngbecause I don't see too many posters thumbing their  nose at him? But 10 + 9 in A-10 can equate to 5 + 4 in the Big East. But who knows? Anyhow I'll gladly take the big body, but will temper expectations. And you are 100% correct, beggars can't be choosers. Maybe that's why I'm so pissed off right now: because we feel like beggars. But guess we gotta take the mindset of David Ruffin when he sang ; "Ain't to proud to beg"

Eric Paschall transferred out of Fordham , went to Nova , won a NCAA title and , I believe is now in the NBA .  Sometimes kids at other schools can play , despite not being on the Kentucky , Kansas , Duke radar .  For example , Abmas at Oral Roberts. There are others .  Fordham is a great school Academically and while it might not get top 100 kids , some players want the Education Benefits in addition to playing ball .                 Plus , a guy like Paschall or this kid might be good enough to make a BE or other Conference school but , not get minutes behind a more highly recruited player . Just saying ..

Matos originally committed to Mississippi State, before decommitting and committing to New Mexico. Only a freshman last year, interesting.

This kids is not even remotely as talented as Eric was/is.  Eric was a huge coup when Pecora got him to commit to Fordham.  This kid can help but Eric was a difference maker for a high major.

You are correct, but Pascal also went from averaging 16PPG at Fordham to 7PPG his first year at Nova. He also wasn't being asked to immediately fill a huge void at Nova, as Soriano would be asked to do here. Again, Soriano seems like a nice pick up if we are fortunate enough to get him, but not expecting him to be an impact player. At least not next year.
