SJU Transfer Targets/Possibilities

Bamafan, sure we can land those types you've mentioned, as we can also land much better prospects.

Regardless, The point of the original post responded to was true....  There are a ton of prospects in the transfer portal.  That's a fact.

I'll wait till the dust settles before the final judgment.

I really liked Williams and Earlington. Wonderful SJU players who I appreciated. That being said...

Maybe I'm crazy but I don't see this as a disaster. I think this is more change (which like the coaching search is often painful in the short term) as the program continues to change identity. My gut says in a couple of months this board will be pleasantly surprised with the new roster. Not to imply that I wouldn't prefer keeping two major contributors that were upperclassman, it just feels like there are things happening we don't know about and just because those things made outgoing players unhappy/restless/whatever doesn't mean they're necessarily bad for the program.

We will have a roster, so yea we have that excitement in rebuilding it to look forward too. But what any transfer or recruit would be joining right now is hard to figure out.

I guess I just felt completely fine with the losses up until both of these guys. With them we had a 5 man group we could walk out tomorrow and play BE teams with. Without them, we could win any 3 on 3 tourney in NYC, not much else.
I understand this is a bad look. I'm not trying to deny the optics of the day. If Posh/Champagnie/Wusu transfer or Pinzon decomitts then my concern level will be high. I just think these things are happening out of the blue to us but for a reason behind the scenes. It seemed pretty clear to me throughout the season that this was turning into the Julian & Posh show and that Wusu was very clearly being groomed for a large role sooner than later. Something was said, implied, felt that made these things happen. Because we didn't get a sense of turmoil between the players (who still seem supportive of one another) my intuition is telling me that this was initiated by the staff (not that these players were told to leave only that they're being informed the program is moving in a certain direction) I also think a Big East team that has a ton of minutes to give out yet already has Posh Alexander & Julian Champagnie (fingers crossed) will be much more enticing to transfers than we were a week ago. We'll see who they add. I loved the Stef Smith addition. Let's see

I suspect this is largely a generational thing, but just as the NBA has lost some (not all but a fair amount) of its allure to me because of players jumping from team to team to build super teams, I fear I am about to lose some of what has made college basketball so attractive to me: watching players develop and grow over a few years. Add to that we have a coach better known for coaching acumen than recruiting big time talent and it's hard to be optimistic, especially about next year which I was previously quite optimistic about.  But that's just me.

The program withstood COVID-19; we’ll see about NCAA-21.  I hope it’s not terminal to SJU basketball.

I think the writing is on the wall. Let’s call the Transfer Portal for what it is. This is college basketball free agency. So in my opinion this is slowly becoming a professional league. That’s fine I guess. Times are changing. Maybe it’s just not for me. I liked watching committed kids develop over a period of time. I would say 4 years but let’s be honest we have had very few 4 year kids over the last 20 years. That’s done. St. John’s and most of the other Programs are 1 or 2 year pit stops. I already follow a pro team so why do I need this? I think college basketball is dying a slow death. Just a matter of time.

The number of players in the transfer portal is a reflection of today's society. When I was a teenager, if you didn't get as much playing time as you thought you should get, you would work harder to show the coach that you deserved more time on the court. Too many of today's kids want and expect immediate gratification. If things don't go exactly the way that they want, they walk away and look for it elsewhere. I'm not saying that this philosophy is necessarily right or wrong, it's just something that most people from my generation have difficulty relating to.

True or False: Starting with Caraher, St johns has had more kids leave the program this year then any other team in the nation.
Not even close buddy.  There's a school that has had 15 players in the portal this season lol.  There's 74 schools that have at least 5 in the portal.  And that's currently in the portal not committed, so very possible a lot of those schools had more in the portal but they already committed to another school.

wow this is an absolute joke. The college basketball we all know and love is gone. This is how it is now

All I know is Mike Anderson could use another commit soon to get all the fans off the ledge...;-)

Have you finished compiling that list yet ?
Wasn't me... that's way too much work lol.  Some guy on twitter, but his list isn't even updated and that's how many teams have lost players.  74 teams have lost at least 5 players, that's 22% of teams and the season isn't even over!

If true and this was orchestrated by the staff, the only reason for it I see is that they know that there are high quality Big East level NYC area kids who they know guys like Van and DeMeo can reel in out of the transfer portal. Guys who Posh, Julian, Wusu Pinzon and Traore know etc. I don’t see another reason for them doing this otherwise.

Hey, we have a starting spot for Kadary now...;-)

yes, that’s exactly the type of kid I’m talking about. Bring in him , Aiden and one other NYC kid from the portal and we’ll be fine as long as all the freshman show up and Champ comes back. But, I’m taking a show me approach to this because I don’t trust anything anymore when it comes to this program

Per Zach
There was a jealousy factor, I'm told, of the attention the New York guys received with certain players who have left St. John's. #sjubb

Unnamed sources knocking kids with rumor as they head out the door is a bad look. It reminds me of the Jeff Wilpon Mets. At least that was done with professionals.

Agree Gene.  I wanna see it too, but we are two good transfers away from being better next year already, providing Champs comes back and I’m fairly certain he will.
