SJU Transfer Targets/Possibilities

Per Zach
There was a jealousy factor, I'm told, of the attention the New York guys received with certain players who have left St. John's. #sjubb

Unnamed sources knocking kids with rumor as they head out the door is a bad look. It reminds me of the Jeff Wilpon Mets. At least that was done with professionals.

That's terrible, if that was the case.

Of course the New York kids were going to get more publicity.  The five best players on this team (in no particular order) were Posh, Julian, Wusu, Williams, and Dunn.  4 out of those 5 were from the city, and the one who wasn't, saw injuries keep him from reaching his full potential.

Did Moore and Cole want more pub?  Well, they had their moments, but didn't earn it as much as the other 5 guys did.

I really liked Williams and Earlington. Wonderful SJU players who I appreciated. That being said...

Maybe I'm crazy but I don't see this as a disaster. I think this is more change (which like the coaching search is often painful in the short term) as the program continues to change identity. My gut says in a couple of months this board will be pleasantly surprised with the new roster. Not to imply that I wouldn't prefer keeping two major contributors that were upperclassman, it just feels like there are things happening we don't know about and just because those things made outgoing players unhappy/restless/whatever doesn't mean they're necessarily bad for the program.

We will have a roster, so yea we have that excitement in rebuilding it to look forward too. But what any transfer or recruit would be joining right now is hard to figure out.

I guess I just felt completely fine with the losses up until both of these guys. With them we had a 5 man group we could walk out tomorrow and play BE teams with. Without them, we could win any 3 on 3 tourney in NYC, not much else.
I understand this is a bad look. I'm not trying to deny the optics of the day. If Posh/Champagnie/Wusu transfer or Pinzon decomitts then my concern level will be high. I just think these things are happening out of the blue to us but for a reason behind the scenes. It seemed pretty clear to me throughout the season that this was turning into the Julian & Posh show and that Wusu was very clearly being groomed for a large role sooner than later. Something was said, implied, felt that made these things happen. Because we didn't get a sense of turmoil between the players (who still seem supportive of one another) my intuition is telling me that this was initiated by the staff (not that these players were told to leave only that they're being informed the program is moving in a certain direction) I also think a Big East team that has a ton of minutes to give out yet already has Posh Alexander & Julian Champagnie (fingers crossed) will be much more enticing to transfers than we were a week ago. We'll see who they add. I loved the Stef Smith addition. Let's see

If you love the addition of Smith how come Williams leaving doesn’t bother you? They are both senior shooting guards. One knows the system and was 3rd in the BE in 3fg%.

I don’t think the sky is falling. I’m not even putting any blame on Anderson. I just think it was much easier to put together and fill the already big holes that were in place than it will be now. Williams should have been in addition to whoever was added. Not in lieu of.

Two would be seniors who finished top ten in the BE in 3fg% just left an already short roster. Being concerned isn’t an overreaction.

True or False: Starting with Caraher, St johns has had more kids leave the program this year then any other team in the nation.

False but why let that stand in the way of a good performance.

The other problem is that there is no consequence for a player entering the portal and then wanting to come back.  Imagine if you told them that if you enter the portal you loose your scholarship if you want to return.  I wonder if they would think twice about entering the portal.

Not even close buddy.  There's a school that has had 15 players in the portal this season lol.  There's 74 schools that have at least 5 in the portal.  And that's currently in the portal not committed, so very possible a lot of those schools had more in the portal but they already committed to another school.

wow this is an absolute joke. The college basketball we all know and love is gone. This is how it is now

5 of the 9 guys who played for USC last night were first year transfer players including every starter not named Mobley.  Just saying.  Not ideal but per Making Plays post this is becoming the norm for many if not most schools this year but isn't some sudden change.  It's been coming.

And there were plenty of other impact transfers littered up and down the rosters of successful teams.  Playing the transfer market well was already important, and as some have alluded recently it many be more important than than recruiting now for schools that don't regularly sign top 50 players.

So about Desi Sills and Aidan Igheoin.....

...if those 2 come here, I bet I can pick the 5 posters that will start the false narrative that Roberts and Williams are better lol

Just to be clear, Williams leaving DOES bother me. I'm not at all indifferent to it. He was one of my favorites and I'd prefer that he stayed. It bothers me less than some because my main point is that his importance and contribution (in my opinion) is being overblown a bit. In my mind he's much more replacable than someone like Moore. I also do understand why people are concerned. This is a lot of departures. I didn't mean to be condescending or say anyone is "over reacting" Only explaining why I'm optimistic which mainly has to do with which players have (seemingly, hopefully) been retained and the amount of movement we're seeing everywhere.

If you told me I could only keep 3 players from last season they'd be Posh, Champagnie and Moore. If Moore is gone then Wusu.

I wasn't thinking of Smith as a 1 for 1 replacement for Williams but I will entertain it...I don't think Stef Smith is a more talented player than Williams but I do think he may be more reliable and consistent. I don't know how his success at Vermont will transfer to the Big East but based on how he's played against P6 teams, I feel good.

Well!
Next time I'll think twice before logging off to do some work for a few hours.

I feel the same way.

I logged off this site some time around 11 pm last night. Did not log in this morning. Given my practice range performance and actual golf game today, no wonder why everything seems to  be falling apart. Got on the system at around 1 pm this afternoon, and WOW!.

Wish I could be so frustrated, even when I was a 15 back in the day.

I love Earlington, as a fan.  I love how he's progressed.  I think he'd be foolish to go elsewhere -- he has developed well under CMA and staff and has a definite significant role on this team.  I also think CMA does an excellent job of putting him in positions where he can succeed, and hope that resonates with him, because he is the type of player IMO who needs to be put in the right spots to play at optimal value.

All very true but what if ME wants to start, play 27 minutes, and get 10+ shots per game.  He is a unique player but I don't see that type of progression for him at STJ if CMA and staff fill the empty slots with the level of talent we all want and JC returns, even if I do believe he is super valuable.  There are plenty of top mid major teams where he could potentially achieve those types of goals.

I can't even keep up but 3 Memphis players entered portal DJ Jeffries, Boogie Ellis and Damion Baugh.

Boogie and DJ were very highly recruited kids who were initially committed to Duke and Kentucky before both de-committed to go to Memphis..  Boogie just scored 23 points in the NIT Final and is transferring.  Wouldn't mind getting involved with either kid particularly DJ.

Just wondering, what happens if after looking at these huge numbers, the legislation allowing this one time “free”transfer fails meaning only those who have graduated will be able to shit up next year while the others have to sit out a year (unless granted a hardship waiver)?

Sills I would be interested in (would rather have Khadary Richmond but don’t know if that is realistic but he appeal to his joining the “Brooklyn Posse”.)

Igiehon, doesn’t grab my interest.  I wanted him after high school and would have been happy to have him this year, but he didn’t do anything in two years at the Ville.  I am looking for upgrades.  If we got him and two other bigs who had some status in getting on the court and doing something, then I’d feel better.

If they decommitted from Duke and Kentucky and then went to Memphis they are way above what we can afford
