All very true but what if ME wants to start, play 27 minutes, and get 10+ shots per game. He is a unique player but I don't see that type of progression for him at STJ if CMA and staff fill the empty slots with the level of talent we all want and JC returns, even if I do believe he is super valuable. There are plenty of top mid major teams where he could potentially achieve those types of goals.Rob post=428478 said:I love Earlington, as a fan. I love how he's progressed. I think he'd be foolish to go elsewhere -- he has developed well under CMA and staff and has a definite significant role on this team. I also think CMA does an excellent job of putting him in positions where he can succeed, and hope that resonates with him, because he is the type of player IMO who needs to be put in the right spots to play at optimal value.

So McGriff, Dunn, Cole, Moore, Roberts, Toro and Caraher have definitely departed from last year's team either to graduation or transfer portal. Champagnie is exploring NBA and other professional options but potentially could come back.
We have three Freshman coming in Pinzon, Traore and Stanley. We have one Grad transfer Smith and another transfer Nyiwe coming in.
Returning so far from this past year's roster are Alexander, Wusu, Williams and Earlington (not counting non scholarship players).
With only four returnees (five if you count Julian) that changes the team composition significantly. That number of just four or five also assumes that there will be no further defections or injuries. That is not very much to work with considering that we were talking about almost everyone returning just a few weeks ago.
Of the players coming in it seems like there is limited info on how Nywie, Traore and Stanley will do at the next level. Smith (like predecessors Mikey Dixon and Rasheem Dunn) has performed well at a mid major conference level. However it is somewhat unclear if he will excel at the Big East level. Pinzon seems like he might make the most immediate impact of the Freshman but until we see him play that is just guesswork. Bottom line for me is that there is far more turnover than I could have imagined after we ended our season on March 11th.
I am glad I trust Mike Anderson and I am sure he and the staff will put it all together, but it is hard for me to see us moving forward to the top of the Big East with all the Roster disruptions. Hopefully Julian will come back and we will pick up some nice pieces in this game of musical players. I know depth is an important part of the CMA system, so I am sure they are working on a plan as we speak. As a fan I get attached to the guys we have and root for them to succeed, so there is always a sense of loss when they transfer.
GhostZapper you make an immense amount of sense, without any of the emotion, bias and cockeyed optimism that afflicts much of our fan base. Excellent post.

Six players on our team this season played their first game for St John's (Posh, Wusu, McGriff, Toro, Cole and Moore). With half of our scholarship allotment turned over in one year, CMA was still able to lead us to a 4th place finish.
Things are clearly going to be crazy next season. There are nearly 1,000 players in the portal right now. Every player has the potential to be a free agent. Teams like Pitt and Miami (among others) have been decimated with more than half of their players that still had eligibility remaining entering the portal.
I don't like the new system but it is what it is. Every college basketball fan is going to need to buy a program next season to figure out who is on their team. Fans will be rooting "for the shirt" because there is going to be a huge amount of turnover throughout the nation. But I have confidence in CMA and his staff. In the end, I am confident that we will be competitive once again next season.
On paper with the Smith signing yes. But that is on paper, the proof will be on the court.usguard post=428561 said:I don’t know but it appears to me what we have coming in is better than what we lost
Yes, everything is riding on Champ returning. Hard to speculate about next year until you know for certain he'll be back. But, from the sounds of how CMA was talking and the statement Julian put out, seems like unless something crazy happens and he suddenly jumps to a projected first rounder he'll be back. And honestly as long as him and Posh both return the preseason projections will be about the same no matter who else they add.NCJohnnie post=428568 said:Futile to speculate how good we'll be next year until the transfer/Champ dust clears. If Champ, Posh, GWill, Wusu & Earlington return, with Stef Smith playing a key role and we add at least one solid big and a couple of other solid role guys to go along with the three frosh we can be very good. But that's more ifs than I wanna think about so I'll just enjoy the end of March Madness, the start of baseball and being able to go to the gym again for now.
