SJU Transfer Targets/Possibilities

Nice pickup as a grad transfer. Very good player. Also keeps the 22 scholarships open for some big time HS guards were looking at

Smith committed this morning to SJU! Per Zach b

And per Stef's twitter postStef Smith@Smithball_skill·5mThank you to all the schools that recruited me during this process. I am truly blessed to announce that I will be finishing my college basketball career at St.John’s University. Can’t wait to get to work and play for Coach Anderson and the rest of the staff!

Smith is a good player from the signature program in that conference, UVM.  Well coached.  Should provide really good depth at guard position next year.

From Paultz’ avatar I’m gonna guess we are heavily involved.  If the staff thinks they can get more out of him that he has shown, gotta trust them on that.  He’s got the physical tools for sure.

Would love the Iggie addition assuming that he's followed by another big (even a one year grad transfer) with a track record of producing at the Division 1 level. Give me Aiden and the Stef Smith equivalent of a big man and I'm happy.

I don't think the staff needs 7 forwards on the team for 2 spots.  They already Champ, Earlington, Stanley, Traore, Nyiwe, and will add 1 more, that's more than enough.  CMA is not a coach that has a lot of bigs on his team like a Georgetown and pounds it in the paint, he likes quick players that's versatile that can switch out on defense.  Assuming the incoming big is taller than 6'8 he'll have 5 guys that's 6'8 or taller to mix and match lineups.

I doubt we’d land a second big guy if we land Igiehon. Don’t forget that besides Igiehon at 6’10” 250 we’d have Nywie at 6’10” 215 both at center, as well as Stanley at 6’8” 245.  I think that people might be underestimating Nywie a bit as he was committed to a top school before coming here and has some skills.  Igiehon has a lot of tools and with some injury and illness, has not really broken the surface.  In this case I will guess we will grab the “bird in the hand” and grab Igiehon, even if he’s not the back to the basket big guy many want.  He’d still be a big upgrade over Roberts and physically tough to handle up front.  Igiehon would be a big that can excel in the running game and sort of does fit Cma’s system.

Not a transfer, a Hs recruit but I wish staff would get involved with former penn state commit Elijah Hutchins-Everett.  6’10 4* big kid who is mobile, has offensive skill and is still on the board.  NJ kid who plays at Putnam Science in CT.

Menu imo opinion is one big and another guard/shooter. Of course other variables can come into play.

Yeah I think a big and another guard/wing shooter is what we need and we’d be looking pretty strong entering next season if Champ comes back and nobody else leaves.

Stoked Stef Smith is committed to SJU! Seems like a big upgrade over Vince Cole

Why do people keep referring to Cole?  Smith is replacing Dunn.
Probably because Dunn scholarship had already been used by one of the incoming freshmen.  Smith is taking one of the 3 scholarships that just became open.  And considering Cole was considered the shooter for this team and all articles posted on Smith so far since his committment have all referenced his specialty as being a good shooter, people are going to say it's a Cole replacement, which I personally think is more accurate than Dunn.  I considered Pinzon as the replacement for Dunn.

I think just roster-wise with regard to position, regardless of scholarships, Stef is the replacement for Dunn.  Cole was a wing and so is Pinzon.  Gonna be interesting to see who else we add.  The Stef addition can not be understated.  He’s a quality veteran guard and an excellent shooter.  Allow us to do many more things because he can shoot all over the court.  I loved Dunn, and not taking anything away from him, but Stef is an upgrade because he do every thing Dunn could getting to the hole, but is dangerous from the outside. Regardless of our losses thus far, we got better today.  Let’s keep it up.

Penn State transfer @Jamariwheeler5 tells me he’s heard from Florida, Miami, Ohio State, GCU, South Carolina, UNLV, St. John’s, TCU, Wright state, USF, FIU, Murray State, Texas A&M, Tulsa, Southern Illinois, Texas San Antonio, Elon, James Madison, Umass, Towson,San Diego and FGCU

We need a proven big not a project. He doesn't need to be a stud, just a solid 20-25 MPG player who has already proven himself at a mid to high major. I have no problem with an AI and/or Nwiye coming off the bench. I just don't want to go in to next season with a freshman and some unproven players manning the low post.

Sounds like a show! No? /media/kunena/emoticons/wink.png/media/kunena/emoticons/smile.png

1.  Stef Smith is a REALLY good addition to the program.
2.  I don't really understand that "is he replacing Dunn or Cole" discussion at all.  We start a PG plus two guards, we lost the two guards, we added a guard.  It isn't like the scoreboard is going to say that he's playing in Dunn's spot or Cole's spot.
3.  Get a big and after that it's "best available player," IMHO.

We will be fine.
