SJU Transfer Targets/Possibilities

What are the Ethics , if any , for Coaches to solicit  Transfer Recruits ?  Does the Player reach out and just enter the Portal and then Coaches can contact players they are interested in attracting ?

Some less than “ethical” schools do their homework before kids enter portal. It is easy for example to follow up on a player you recruited but did not land. Contacting kid’s handlers, AAU contacts, family members indirectly during his season to potentially entice a kid is not so rare. If a kid is sitting, being recruited over or otherwise unhappy, I bet the process for talented players far precedes entering portal. Just don’t get caught. :)

I honestly don’t think our transfers are anywhere near as bad as Pitt’s nor many others and many had figured we’d have 4 transfers for a long time now.  Our “starters” that are leaving aren’t really heavy impact players with the exception of Moore who seems like a bit of a head-case.
Losing 20+ PPG to transfer is never a good thing.  Moore and Cole are big losses no matter what people say, both heavily contributed to wins.  Cole actually made a game winner.  I know it's easy to say now that they weren't that big of a deal, but both had pretty good first years and got experience in the system, that's something that can't be replaced, because the replacements will have learning curves when they are learning the new system.

Now with that said, most other teams are experiencing the same thing, so hopefully it evens out.  But, I don't know why people are thinking St. John's current transfer situation is just so much better than Pitt's, I guess it's hope that Justin will transfer here, so people have convinced themselves it's a lot worse over there, but in reality it's not that much different than what's going on here and everywhere else.

SJU's three (not four, unless you want to count Caraher) departures are two JUCOs who didn't work out and a limited-minutes player who might not even leave.  No effort was made by SJU to retain any of the three because in one case the replacements are already in house and on the way, and in the other they expect to improve via the transfer portal.

I have a good friend who is close to the Pitt program.  Pitt's situation is completely different than SJU.  That is a mass exodus of players who Capel recruited and who were the core of their team around Champagnie.  Champagnie is probably gone as well, and he also has zero recruits coming in.  Their five (not four) departures include 3 starters and their second and third leading scorers.  It's ugly there, and may get uglier. It's somewhat surprising Capel is still employed, and wouldn't be surprising at all if he isn't for much longer.

Not really sure why you'd overstate SJU losses and understand Pitt's - you clearly spend a lot of time on the game.

Can you say Moore didn’t work out? Ended weirdly and quicker than expected but he 100% gave us more than I expected this season.

I think that after he adjusted, he worked out very well - on the court.  It certainly seems like he did not work out well in other aspects of what the Coach is looking for, and/or that the role they envisioned for him did not work out for him (a la Tariq Owens).  Either way it clearly wasn't a fit for one or both parties - I suspect both.

If only we got a second Champs here, we'd be tough to beat.  Deep run...

If this could only happen, we would have the best pair of forwards in the country.  If Justin cut his hair to match Julian, then defenses may leave Julian open from 3 thinking it's Justin. You need every edge possible in this game.

I never actually figured that Justin was coming here but there’s always hope.  If by some chance Capel gets fired and Justin doesn’t get proper feedback from NBA who knows, but I’m sure unlikely.

Transfer Stef Smith of Vermont was also referenced as someone SJU is looking at.

Considerable chatter out there re potentially more SJU movement fwiw. I hate this free agency era

I don’t hate it unless it’s starters we are losing and we replace them with more talented kids.

Seeing as there’s only one kid left who I wouldn’t be too upset with leaving, it’s not a great notion to deal with IMO.

Yeah agree Mase.  Let’s wait and see of course.  The other possibility is GWill as staff seems to be pushing hard for guards.  I’d hate to see that and hope not.  Would like to see him back and healthy for his senior year.

Seems clear staff is looking for increasing shooting proficiency and the ever present big. Fingers crossed.
IMO, we need two more solid shooters (hopefully, one of 'em is a dead eye marksman) and a steady big.

We cant start losing good big east plays like earlington.  Time for Coach Mike to start promising playing time and starting spots to these kids.

Next season:
Starters:
1- posh
2- gwill
3- Champy
4- Earlington
5- ?

30 minutes a game guaranteed.  Lets go Coach!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You dont think any of those 4 have earned that?

This is ruining college basketball.  Wahab leaving GTown?  No continuity at all.  Who wants to watch a bunch of mercenaries play for one year.

It’s certainly not unique to us, but it seems that we’re losing our whole team.  Part of the joy of being a fan is to watch kids develop.  I remember when we signed Earlington, some knowledgeable posters said he likely won’t produce much right away but could turn into a good four year player.

There is no such thing as a four year player any more!  For me, kids like Earlington are what makes college basketball great.  Watching them develop and contribute.  This one if true would really hurt.   Champagnie will enter the portal — may or may not come back.  We are essentially building a new team.
