St. John's has expressed interest in Hofstra grad transfer Tareq Coburn, per source. 6-5 guard who averaged 15.1 points and shot 39.6 percent from deep last year. #sjubb
Nice!

A Queens native and a really strong student, Coburn has been admitted into St. John's challenging medical program. Uncertain if he can do both. Fluid situation. Plans to meet staff this week.

Btw, his dad is a doctor & mom a nurse I believe

It appears that Tareq is a very impressive young man, both on and off the court.  It would take a special kind of person to play Division 1 basketball, as well as attend a medical program.  Seems that the staff has found a gem!

Im confused.  I didn’t think sju had a medical school.

They don't have a medical school, they have a highly regarded PA medical program.

SJU also offers Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Sciences will provide an interdisciplinary academic program of study that will foster competencies in areas related to biomedical sciences as well as core competencies in the liberal arts and sciences. Since the healthcare industry contains a wide range of professions, this program will prepare graduates to identify and address administrative, management, and policy issues within the healthcare industry. In addition, this program will prepare graduates for further education and training in clinical practices and advanced scientific research within the health sciences.

Nursing, The undergraduate nursing program at St. John's College is an upper division program meaning all students are admitted in their junior year of study upon completing general education and nursing course prerequisites. As mentioned a an expanded program is targeted for Fall of 22 as I understand it

Got it.  Thank you both for the explanation.

Coburn

“Hi everyone, I’ve made an academic decision to forgo  playing professionally right now to finish my schooling amid pandemic. I’m only interested in a school that has a Physician Associate/Assistant (PA) Masters degree program. In regards of saving everyone’s time and energy “

No way to do the PA school and play ball.
Maybe he's a lot smarter than you./media/kunena/emoticons/wink.png

lol.  Pa School requires 5 full days in-class with multiple tests per week and no vacations .  They’re very strict about it.  Can’t do any traveling at all during that time and it’s not flexible like regular college courses.  They won’t make exceptions for athletes.

CMA had a pre-medical student as a walk-on named Kikko Haydar at Arkansas, he played basketball all 4-years, then returned  as a grad assistant while also in med school.

Now, I'm not sure Coburn's complete situation, but I'm sure if it was something that wasn't possible he wouldn't be looking into it, because he originally said he was done with basketball.

With some of the bad luck we've historically encountered I'm surprised Lew Alcindor didn't transfer here under similar circumstances after his 4 years at UCLA. /media/kunena/emoticons/smile.png
