@Seton Hall, Sun. Jan. 22, 12 Noon, FS1/570AM

The Hall toyed with us in the first half, almost like the big kids against the younger kids in the local school yard. As I previously posted Delgado would eat us alive. Rebounds, defense and foul shooting were lacking again. We took too many poor shots in the first half as opposed to more passing, cutting and less three pointers during the second half.
Ahmed still shoots his foul shots too hard, as evidenced by them hitting the back of the rim. Has to soften the shot by aiming for the front of the rim. Ponds is taking too many difficult shots. And is Freudenberg a forgotten man? Looks that way, especially when Alibecovig gets more playing time. At least it was a watchable game in the second half. Kids don't give up - good sign. Matt needs to desperately patrol the junior college and transfer circuit.

On the bright side Mullin is wearing much better ties ever since I mentioned it a few games ago. Going to more power ties.

Gotta find something nice to say today other than at least it seems like our guys didnt quit in the 2nd half by looking at the box score

You are correct, we did not quit in the second half and that was one of the few silver linings to this game. Lovett in particular is one tough competitor, reminding me more amd more of Harrison in that regard.

I know others disagree on this, but why again no zone when we were getting killed in the paint? Even for a few possessions?

I haven't checked the stats but the Powell kid was consistent hitting threes against our man to man defense. The opposition gets wide open three pointers because our guards fall into the middle to help out and are late to the corner. With a zone Delgado would have been able to roam freely between the defense, probably scoring easier then he did. Too many second shots and porous defense.

Someone needs to tell Lovett that he is NOT Allen Iverson and Ahmed needs to be put at the end of the bench. I'd rather see the German kid play.....

Those were, imo, our two best players today. Am I missing something?

Yes. Didn't they have more then half of the 72 points we scored?

The future looks bleak. This team that is presently getting blown out by the Hall will be basically be the same team next year. The recruiting is poor and the redshirts sitting out this year are not game changers. This is turning out to be a replay of the Lavin years without two NCAA appearances .For all the optimist who believe Owens will put on 30 lbs and Yakwe will learn to catch and shoot a basketball. Good Luck!
ll

I disagree with this assessment.
There's reason to be optimistic. Freshmen become sophomores! Sophomores become juniors.

And there is certainly talent on the way. Justin Simon is a 6-5 guard that was a top 30-35 recruit nationally out of HS. That's right around where guys like Sampson Harkness and Pointer were ranked. They turned out pretty good, no?

And Clark is a 6-7 forward with 2 years experience in the big 10. Right now he would arguably be better than Ahmed and certainly better than Alibegovic or Yakwe.

There is reason to think we will be better next year. Including the coaching.

And our fans need to stop crying about 6'9 "bull" powerforwzrds. Those guys don't grow on trees. Any big guy with even halfway decent skill is highly sought after.

No, I want the big, bulky center next year. Referring to halfway decent - do you mean like Sima? Delgado would have still eaten him alive.

Giving up 85 to a team that has struggled offensively is not a good formula.

Our entire team D is not good.
From Ponds and Lovett to Ahmed to the bigs.

We rightfully criticize Owens and Yakwe... but the other 3 are not good defenders.

Ellison has the potential to defend well, but only brings the energy and IQ every other game.

Once again we overplayed Delgado down low. Instead of blocking the baseline and forcing him to go to the middle Owens allowed him to take easy layups.

It was a total disgrace. Do these guys enjoy being embarrased?

Popcorn is out of the microwave and now have my Rum and coke.. See you all after the game and after the movie which can't be nearly as depressing as the game

Hey Mike if you are seeing Manchester by the Sea or Fences it will be more depressing.

Nathalie got the screener for fences also. I'm watching that one tomorrow. Cant take too much depressing stuff in a day after a st johns loss. Only thing that could cheer me up is seeing New England lose or a really good episode of homeland tonight

Was out today so missed the game. Glad I was out tired of hearing the same old we are young That aside we have to wake up to reality we are just not hat good WE build up our guards like they are the 2nd coming .They are decent players but not great There size hurts them against bigger talented guards and the big East is not like HS where guards of their size can get to the rim. Often they will be blocked ,stopped If we were better on the def end where we could pick properly for them their stats would go up but hot their fault they have to try and make up for inside deficiency and are over worked for when they are out of the game our talent drops So I will enjoy the teams efforts for the rest of the yr and hope things keep improving and better players come to our school
WE are much better than last yr But it would have been nice to beat the Hall

Our front court players shouldn't be able to sleep tonight. I get pissed when I get out rebounded in a work league game. these guys are getting embarrassed on a national stage. If I was mullin they would be back in the gym on campus tonight.

Agree. I was 5' 11" at a small Catholic High School and played the back of a zone. We played Looie's St. Ann's team at the MSG in the playoffs. I had to stick my ass into York Larese and some other monster to rebound. You force them to go over your back. Hello, anyone home. I have never seen such a poor boxing out bunch.

A blue tie?
Way back when grades 1 to 4 wore red ties grades 5 to 8 wore blue ties

blue is my favorite color and I have a virtually identical tie to the one he wore today. Actually have another one that is very close. Maybe the color doesn't go so well with the shirt he was wearing but I'm a fan of the type of tie he was wearing today

Seton Hall just showed how far away St. John's is from competing http://nyp.st/2jmb60D

That "gulf" the writer referred to is only two players. I will use my extensive knowledge of Spanish to describe that gulf: Rodriguez and Delgado.
Those two talented and physical players almost singlehandedly out rebounded the entire St. John's team.
The only other difference was a 10% point shooting difference.
The other obvious comical difference between the two teams was Yakwe playing center, losing the tap as usual and scoring zero points.
We played hard in the second half and that was a big positive.

Wheels off.

No on court leader who recognizes the need to rein in the undisciplined, out of control patterns we fall into every game. Other than Owens and Williams, everyone on the team takes the turn. Some more than others.

Have to believe this staff recognizes it. Would love to read the "bubble above their heads" when we go on one of our binges.

Especially when Mussini is in the game. Puts the effort in but simply cannot guard anyone. Like clockwork, teams go right after him.

Since I didnt watch the 2nd half I took a closer look at the box score. Our turnovers were less than theirs and we scored more from the ft line but damn other than the rebounding numbers they had 19 assists and we had 10. That's 90% more. Ughhhh

Just started checking the board after only catching part of the 2nd half. Not surprised at seeing the usual gripes on the board. The simple truth continues to be that we need better, and bigger players. Looking at what is coming next year, and who we are pursuing in 2018, I don't see this problem being addressed. We have one skinny and raw kid signed for 2018, a 6'8 transfer next season, and only 2 other bigs targeted for 2018, one of whom is a reach, and the other who knows. Right now, the chance of a NCAA bid by year 4 rests on a ton of ifs, which is not what some expected by year 4.
