Seton Hall Game

One of the worst officiated games of the young season. There were at least 4 Seton Hall fouls not called. The technical on Jordan was not justified as it appeared he was giving up the ball that hit the Hall player inadvertently.  Foul shots and the ball?? The refs did everything but gift wrap the game with that call.  With the commissioner sitting at Courtside she should realize an incompetent Jim Burr should not be a Ref next season.
Sounds like sour grapes but the number of foul shots given the Hall was ridiculous.
As for the game and the players, Seton Hall was clearly better prepared and Sterling Gibbs showed SJ what it lacks in spades, a point guard that is a scoring threat.  Jamal Branch was clearly outplayed. In fact, except for D'Angelo Harrison, the Hall has a talent advantage at the guard positions even with Whitehead out. There is no consistency from players like Greene, Jordan or Branch to compete with the better Big East backcourts.  The best guard recruited by Lavin last year is a walk on. The best bigs are ineligible and Amar got no burn which left Obekpa sucking air in the final 5 critical minutes. As I suspect, this lack of depth will translate to tired legs by mid February and will only be one of the factors why this team will likely be  unranked and a bubble team by the time the Big East tourney starts.
Which leads us back to Lavin. The wardrobe has made him a joke to announcers. Wearing a turtleneck or open collar seems like too much work for this apparently lame duck attitude of his and the ever professional John Wooden is rolling in his grave. Of course his wardrobe will not win or lose any game but the negative comments by the press is embarrassing.

Congrats to the Hall but I think we'll win the rematch.  They have some nice young talent but I doubt Whitehead stays and Mobley is a senior. Unless Lavin pulls some recruits out of his butt they will have better talent next year even with those two losses.  Criticize Hit, me or other fans here but more games like today will be the norm without a bench or the inability by Lavin to make use of players like Amar and Christian to compensate for poor shooting guards that make us smaller than we really are.

I actually thought Jamal played a good game.

Sina just had the game of his life. Especially being wide open.

And, last I checked, we do have a PG that is a scoring threat.

Problem is, he is more concerned with the NBA scouts in the seats than what is on the scoreboard.

I think way too many people are overreacting.

SH matches up with us better than any team in the BE because they are one team who is just as athletic as we are. And that is why Dom, who has been our difference maker this year, was nullified.

Amar & Christian wouldn't have moved the needle today. JDR's big body keeping Delgado off the glass would have.

On to the next one.

I agree it was six on five with Burr and the other refs jobbing us and taking us out of our game. How did they miss Obekpa getting elbowed in the mouth when the ref was standing right there. Onions Rafferty said it was inadvertent. Most fouls are inadvertent. Other than that, its scary that a bunch of freshmen schooled our seniors much of the time.

This somehow reminded me of the Fordham game in Lavin's first year. We got over it.

Saturdays game is huge, must win.
Lose that and we could be looking at 0-3

Are you bi-polar? Your fanaticism has made Marillac look like a downer in comparison, and you are ready to jump ship after one road loss to a quality conference opponent? SH is 11-2 with a top 30 RPI. There isn't a team in the top 25 other than maybe UK that won't lose on the road in conference to a team like SH.

Deep breaths, guys. 11-2...rub some dirt on it...protect the home court on Saturday to stay in the top 20. The only "must win" games are against Depaul because of what a loss will do to the RPI.

So with #6 Villanova coming up Tuesday, you don't think that the Butler game is a must win?
I'm not saying that they'll lose vs nova, but it's a real possibility. I never said I was jumping ship Marillac, but think as you want. I don't care.

C'mon, Marillac - you know he was just the same dupe with his new 'oldschool Redmen' handle. This was his over the top, super fake and overly positive fake account that he used to mock the "yes men' of redmen.com. I don't know how anyone could fall for this old mans BS. What a pathetic life it must be to be so old and spending the last chapters of your life being a ridiculous troll on the internet for a school you supposedly 'root' for. Quite the life but at least it gives me something to laugh at and make sure that I'm nothing like when I get to the last chapters of my own life.

Damn there are some real losers on the board

Oh, and I'm not jumping ship.

Losing a road conference game isn't the end of the world. It happens.

When it's the first league game of the year, you are favored, and the other team is missing a key player, it's a bad loss, whether we want to admit it or not.

Hmmm. Ironic this is the first thread you've made an appearance in since you bashed the team for blowing a lead against Syracuse.

Really don't think that's "ironic." But, suffice it to say, there's not much to discuss about games against the likes of Fordham, LB State and Tulane, except that at least unlike in the recent past, we didn't lose any of them.

Is it an important game? Yeah, I'd say so. I think it is reasonable to hope for two or fewer losses at home in-conference, and losing the first game (not to mention starting 0-2) is not how you want to spend that budget. You also don't want to go down 0-1 to a team and have to fight the sweep at their place.

Is it a must win? No. We are 11-2. We have only lost to two quality teams and have a very good RPI. Also, Butler is a tournament team. If we lose to Butler and then beat Villanova...we'd be right back in it. Let's hope it doesn't come to that.

I agree with one thing you said 98, on to the next one.
I disagree with just about everything you said otherwise. Jamal played as well as he could which is not saying much given his dearth of talent but I commend you for thinking his 5 points vs the 25 and 8 assists by Gibbs was even remotely comparable. As for your thinking Rysheed Jordan is a point guard who is a scoring threat, then Sterling Gibbs should declare for the draft because Jordan is nowhere near as complete a player at this point nor is he assigned any point guard duties by Lavin.
While I agree to a certain extent about JDR and Delgado, he is a zero offensive threat while, if properly coached and developed, Amar should be the superior player. Dom was not nullified by SH's athleticism but by a talented 6'9 Mobley who is a true power forward while Dom is just a very small small forward. Of course this is no fault of Dom as the centerpiece of Lavin's recruiting class, the 6'8 Thomas, was penciled in to be the power forward and we may never know the truth about his recruitment nor has our intrepid staff given any hint of WTF is going on with our lone NYC recruit, ADR, aka, the second coming of Bob Lanier.

Seton Hall played very well today and give them credit. They were sky high for 15th ranked SJU.
They hit free throws better than they do, they hit clutch threes like they don't and Sina had a big game.
Delgado rebounded like I wish Sampson could.WOW.
Never the less a little humble pie should get these guys back on track. Look for a win against Butler.
at Carnesecca.

Some people here are acting like their favorite college team never lost a game before. On the road for that matter. SH played like an un-ranked home team should when playing a ranked, in-conference, rival. Their fans showed and made more noise than CA has been able to produce. Their players showed effort, shared the ball, and even hit fouls. Gibbs hit 2 threes the likes of which he hasn't hit since beating Nova. These things happen. There are no gimmes in conference play. A lot of parity this year. losing in the Big East on the road will be par for the course for almost every Big East team, with Nova being the exception. I expect us to be up for Nova and play them the way SH played us. Meaning we have a good chance to win.

Suggest we beat Butler first before assuming anything about Nova. With our narrow margin of error, one game at a time please.

@TomPenders: St John's losing at Seton Hall was not an upset . SJU will go far when they commit to a fullcourt press from the get go . Not just down 10+.

with more depth I could agree with Penders.

My opinion is that they cannot go full court from the get go, they were sucking wind at the end of this game. Especially if Jordan does it ok D
