Seton Hall Game

Some people here are acting like their favorite college team never lost a game before. On the road for that matter. SH played like an un-ranked home team should when playing a ranked, in-conference, rival. Their fans showed and made more noise than CA has been able to produce. Their players showed effort, shared the ball, and even hit fouls. Gibbs hit 2 threes the likes of which he hasn't hit since beating Nova. These things happen. There are no gimmes in conference play. A lot of parity this year. losing in the Big East on the road will be par for the course for almost every Big East team, with Nova being the exception. I expect us to be up for Nova and play them the way SH played us. Meaning we have a good chance to win.

Suggest we beat Butler first before assuming anything about Nova. With our narrow margin of error, one game at a time please.

Agree. Butler played Nova tough today, good ball movement and penetration. Never stopped hustling. Should be another tough game.

One of the worst officiated games of the young season. There were at least 4 Seton Hall fouls not called. The technical on Jordan was not justified as it appeared he was giving up the ball that hit the Hall player inadvertently.  Foul shots and the ball?? The refs did everything but gift wrap the game with that call.  With the commissioner sitting at Courtside she should realize an incompetent Jim Burr should not be a Ref next season.
Sounds like sour grapes but the number of foul shots given the Hall was ridiculous.
As for the game and the players, Seton Hall was clearly better prepared and Sterling Gibbs showed SJ what it lacks in spades, a point guard that is a scoring threat.  Jamal Branch was clearly outplayed. In fact, except for D'Angelo Harrison, the Hall has a talent advantage at the guard positions even with Whitehead out. There is no consistency from players like Greene, Jordan or Branch to compete with the better Big East backcourts.  The best guard recruited by Lavin last year is a walk on. The best bigs are ineligible and Amar got no burn which left Obekpa sucking air in the final 5 critical minutes. As I suspect, this lack of depth will translate to tired legs by mid February and will only be one of the factors why this team will likely be  unranked and a bubble team by the time the Big East tourney starts.
Which leads us back to Lavin. The wardrobe has made him a joke to announcers. Wearing a turtleneck or open collar seems like too much work for this apparently lame duck attitude of his and the ever professional John Wooden is rolling in his grave. Of course his wardrobe will not win or lose any game but the negative comments by the press is embarrassing.

Congrats to the Hall but I think we'll win the rematch.  They have some nice young talent but I doubt Whitehead stays and Mobley is a senior. Unless Lavin pulls some recruits out of his butt they will have better talent next year even with those two losses.  Criticize Hit, me or other fans here but more games like today will be the norm without a bench or the inability by Lavin to make use of players like Amar and Christian to compensate for poor shooting guards that make us smaller than we really are.

I agree it was six on five with Burr and the other refs jobbing us and taking us out of our game. How did they miss Obekpa getting elbowed in the mouth when the ref was standing right there. Onions Rafferty said it was inadvertent. Most fouls are inadvertent. Other than that, its scary that a bunch of freshmen schooled our seniors much of the time.

This somehow reminded me of the Fordham game in Lavin's first year. We got over it.

How about that stupid technical against Jordan. First of all the idiot refs stopped our possession and drive to the basket while Carrington was hurt in the backcourt. As Raf said, they usually allow play to finish. Jordan clearly did not throw the ball at a Seton Hall player. After stopping his drive down the middle he bounced the ball and as he turned released the ball. From the very beginning these three morons called ticky tack fouls. Just made the game harder.

Well, that's what Pointer and Jordan need to learn about building a reputation. You don't get the benefit of the doubt if you have an altercation every other game. If Branch did it...probably different story, but Jordan has been t'ed up and has a rep for talking trash and celebrating too much.

I'm sure the scouts are just as aware as the refs.

is was a great wakeup game for us as fans. We are simply not deep enough or talented enough to run through the Big East with ease. The predictions of 13-14 wins are just not happening, and if you look at the schedule, there are not going to be very many easy wins, even in a depleted Big East. home and homes are tough to sweep for us because our talent margin is not great enough to offset a home disadavantage without great effort. That being said, I think that 11-12 wins is quite achievable, and along the way see some extremely competitive games. No surprises here yesterday. Seton Hall is a talented team, and we didn't play well down the stretch.

Disagree with some of our fans here. Lose to Butler at home this weekend, and we will regret that loss later on. We also really want to beat Nova on our court, because winning on theirs will be much tougher. One game at a time, but to be a top three team in the BE, we have to win home games.

I'm not reading through this thread, but from the few pages I've perused....

people are freaking out about this?

Agree with Beast. Add to the mix that players good enough to recruit and have scholarships should be used so that our starters do not run out of gas at the end. If we do not plug that hole SHU will not be the end of it.

Well they won 10 games in the Big East last year and posters didn't like it. Winning 11 or 12 would be like getting back the Providence game and the one at DePaul. However we swept Hall and that is not happening.

You can look at it a million ways, but the bottom line unless you have a superior squad, it's a tough conference. Just about every game will be competitive so that should make for a great season for fans. Enjoy it.

This.

How anyone can expect anything different is nuts to me. 10-8 in the conference almost certainly has us dancing. And, contrary to popular thought, 10-8 is in the ballpark of where I suspect we'll end up.

Saturdays game is huge, must win.
Lose that and we could be looking at 0-3

Are you bi-polar? Your fanaticism has made Marillac look like a downer in comparison, and you are ready to jump ship after one road loss to a quality conference opponent? SH is 11-2 with a top 30 RPI. There isn't a team in the top 25 other than maybe UK that won't lose on the road in conference to a team like SH.

Deep breaths, guys. 11-2...rub some dirt on it...protect the home court on Saturday to stay in the top 20. The only "must win" games are against Depaul because of what a loss will do to the RPI.

So with #6 Villanova coming up Tuesday, you don't think that the Butler game is a must win?
I'm not saying that they'll lose vs nova, but it's a real possibility. I never said I was jumping ship Marillac, but think as you want. I don't care.

Is it an important game? Yeah, I'd say so. I think it is reasonable to hope for two or fewer losses at home in-conference, and losing the first game (not to mention starting 0-2) is not how you want to spend that budget. You also don't want to go down 0-1 to a team and have to fight the sweep at their place.

Is it a must win? No. We are 11-2. We have only lost to two quality teams and have a very good RPI. Also, Butler is a tournament team. If we lose to Butler and then beat Villanova...we'd be right back in it. Let's hope it doesn't come to that.

I know Butler had a couple of nice early season wins against UNC and G'town, but they've been smacked around in 3 of their last 5 games (Tennessee, Indiana, and Villanova). It's a home game for St. John's and the game is at Carnesecca, which will play in the Johnnies favor because it's going to be loud in there. Coming off of a loss against an undermanned Seton Hall team, I do consider this game a must win for them (especially due to the fact that they're facing the best team in the conference a couple days later).

Butler game is a must win and I believe it will be. Very tough opening for Butler on the road at Villanova and then St. John's. Tough way to open the conference games.

Who was that imposter wearing Dom's uniform? I hope he returns on Saturday

One aspect of Dom's recent reneaissance that he needs to take advantage of is when he get the ball at foul line. He needs to drive or shoot more...still very hesitant
