Seton Hall Game

I know people will disagree but I've always felt we should have hired whoever necessary to land Whitehead. I feel even stronger about that now. It's not the 80's or 90's SJU anymore, the 2013 version of SJU can't afford to miss out on players like that especially to rivals.

From an ethical and leadership standpoint, you don't want to hire coaches for players and I get that. But at this point I want to win and do whatever it takes (as long as it doesn't lead to vacated wins- which the Keith Thomas signing could have resulted in ironically).

That would have required Lavin to fire his buddy Rico or a coach who was only here for 1 year in Whitesell or the only guy on the staff who actually goes to games and recruits in Chiles. So it wasn't happening.

I didn't think of it like that. Fair enough.

"Lav" and his hardworking staff would be better off putting together a roster of 3 star and 4 star players who stay for their entire four years of eligibility than chasing the elusive superstar.

Whenever Carrington's name came up, he was ridiculed on this board.

According to Rivals (pay) "Lav" offered Messrs. Carrington and Sina but, like so many other players during the past 3 recruiting cycles, they did not accept his offer.

I was one of those people you are probably referring to. I watched him in HS and he did not play like this at all. That being said he's a lefty version of Phil Greene who shot 2 of 7 from field against us so lets not cloud certain thing.. And as much as we kill Lavin he and the entire staff were all over him. He probably saw the amount of guards we have and chose to go somewhere else.

*And I wouldn't say ridiculed. We had other pressing issues not another guard and one that performed like he did in HS.

Moose, I have only seen Carrington twice.. IMHOhe has way more game as a freshman than Phil has right now... He can penetrate and being lefty he uses that to thwart the defense in the paint.. Hit 2 clutch FT'S to win the game for the Hall..

Phil is Phil, good role player.. Carrington will be a quality player for them for several more years, even with Whitehead coming back.

As for Lavin not getting him, you never have too many guards that can play.. PT can be won in practice and in games, Who is to say he wouldn't have pushed ahead of Branch or Greene or, even Jordan, at some point? He showed me a lot today.

He goes left and Phil goes right. They have identical numbers as freshman.

There is no mistake Lavin busted it with Carrington. He was always there watching him. You're not wrong in competing for a spot but when these kids see minutes in 1 place and senior laden team elsewhere they are gonna go for the minutes nearly ALL the time. We have all these other guards on the roster and they aren't playing. Nobody is going to get minutes over our guards this year. Sorry but thats the truth.

Accepting that premise Moose, then Lavin should have 6 players signed already and Briscoe should be one of them because there will be plenty of playing at SJU next year but yet we have one guard signed and that guard is not Briscoe.

You won't get argument from me there. I'm with you. But as for Carrington I just can't lay blame there when they tried but it just didn't make sense for Khadeem and he chose another local option

Lavin can't even out recruit Kevin Willard!! :eek:hmy:

Lav and his hardworking staff offered Sina and Carrington who chose to play for Willard

Not defending Lavin and his staff, but we didn't have immediate playing time to offer either of them like Seton Hall did. That very well may have been a factor. Both Carrington and Sina are averaging 25+ minutes a game this year.

That's true Room 112, but Whitehead should be here. Whatever deal Willard cut Lavin should have cut. If Tiny wanted to come along then so be it. College Coaches do it all the time. Kansas did it with Danny Manning's Father years ago. It happens all the time. It's not uncommon.
hewould hae had to fire someone...if he could have added a coach, Mo Hicks would have been there

I don't follow the HS circuit like some on this board do, but got the same impression and expected to see a less talented player...the kid has talent and moxie...SJ fans would have loved him..

but, as noted by others, PT may have been a concern on his part...

The best way to get "ridiculed" on this board over the past few years has been to question Lavin or compliment Seton Hall. Now, it's time to realize the Jersey local is cleaning our clocks.

It is also time to realize that we do not need Lavin. The most effective promotion for a basketball program is not a charismatic, slick talker......it's winning. There are plenty of good young coaches out their. Of course, to find the right one, it will take a lot homework on the part of SJU Administration. I sincerely hope that work has begun.

Just got back from Church.

The priest, Fr. John Morely,, a really good guy, is a long time theology professor at The Hall and a huge basketball fan.

He started Mass by saying that today is the Feast Day of Mother Elizabeth Seton and then mentioned the Pirates performance against Villanova.

Over 80 SH grads at Mass according to Fr. Morely.

If we continue losing this year we can forget about ever getting super stars.

JSJ,

Respectfully, you live on the wrong side of the river - and attend the wrong church. :)

I dont see any comparison between him and Phils game honestly.

Overall output not apples to apples game. He's a complimentary piece. Doesn't do anything great but can have days where he can take over.

For someone like myself who admittedly doesn't know anything about Carrington's game, and having watched for the first time, the thing that struck me the most was his aggresiveness in driving the lane. We've never seen that out of Phil in 4 years here.

Yes, he play makes.
