Season Predictions

Yes he has shown gradual improvement, but he's running out of time. This is the final year we have where he can have a loaded roster with experience and depth and finally prove he can make us a tourney team. We don't have any real major players coming in so far next year and we lose a ton after this season, so if he doesn't make the tourney I wouldn't be shocked if he resigned. We should do very well in OOC, the real question will be can we do well in conference.
Who said he is running out of time ? Has our non existent AD said that ? Has the school president said that ? Not to my knowledge. Only you keep repeating that.
As for us loosing a ton this season, possibly, but we only have 1 senior so it is very possible everyone but Clark returns and we add Wright and David C and Heron, who may not be cleared for this season. So on paper we are adding far more than we are guaranteed to lose.
As for Mullin resigning after this season I would be shocked if that occurs as I expect continued improvement, though how much remains to be seen.
Please stop posting and repeating the same crap and go take some anti anxiety medication.
Mike makes some great points here.
First 3 years 12-42 in conference - improvement is needed here.

As far as next year's roster:
Clark graduates
Ponds has stated numerous times he is leaving
Heron - if has monster year he can leave
Simon- will he pull an Owens and go somewhere else for his last year.

These 4 are big core of the team.

I think should stop picking on Mike it is an accurate post.
I think you missed RMNorth's point. While I agree with Mike that the roster past this season is up in the air the main point was that no one who matters has set a timeline on Mullin so he isn't running out of time. And any allusion to an imminent resignation is pretty far fetched as well, more like wishful thinking on the OP's part. Since those two points keep popping up in Mike's post and are based purely on his own speculation they are worthless statements that frustrate rational posters, supporters and critics alike.
Very amusing when people assume that coaches and top staff will say what/how they really mean/feel and tell reporters what is on their mind honestly. If the coach or administrator doesn't say it, then it can't even be a possibility! That's a silly sentiment. I'm very much looking forward to the season, but no one can deny the lack of effort and dedication of Mullin relative to other coaches and how frustrating it is. It's like being at Hooters with a buddy and he swears the blonde bombshell waitress is into him, but you laugh and tell him she's not really into him she just wants a tip. Sometimes they are just not that into you even when you think they are. It would be a lot harder to make that case if he was all over the place doing tons of in-home visits, events, fan engagement, etc. I hope Mullin leads us to a tourney berth and everyone can get back on board again instead of having our 2 factions. As I said, maybe a tourney berth and a great year rejuvenates Mullin and we see a renewed effort and passion for the job after tasting some real success. Let's hope.

Most of us will be in one faction if this team does NOT do well. There are just a lot of us that want to see how this obviously talented roster performs first before we freak out.

A little caveat with the predictions. Without Mustapha this will be a completely different team. They will be small and have no depth at the 5 position. With Heron this should be an NCAA tournament team.

If you gave me Even odds we win either BE regular season championship or BE tournament I would take them. This is our year!

I like this

As has been the case virtually every season under Mullin, St. John’s will be undersized. The transfer of shot-blocking specialist Tariq Owens to Texas Tech made that a certainty. But Mullin is very high on Keita, a 6-9, 240-pound forward who possesses the back-to-the-basket post-up game Owens lacked. Mullin isn’t concerned about losing such a potent shot-blocker. The Hall of Fame player would prefer his team to be more sound defensively, and not rely on an eraser under the basket.

“I think he’s going to be a major presence,” Mullin said of Keita. “He can hold his position [in the post]. He’s one of our fastest guys, straight forward and laterally, which is unique for a guy his size.”

Keita does not have to be anything special, he really just needs to use his big body to stay planted in the paint so he can't be moved around easily like Owens was on a regular basis. I'd rather have an anchor than a shot blocker. This way we can maintain defensive positioning and avoid fouls/goaltending. If he can just rebound and get easy baskets consistently it will be huge.

I have not seen him, but someone who sees him play and practice regularly has said he has the chance to play on the next level. Don't need him to play superman this year, but nice to know the potential is there.

Keita has obviously gotten into solid shape during his time off. I wouldn't say he is a huge body, hes actually a bit lean, but hes a body we havnt had in a while. There's been a few references now to his speed and agility which isn't something I necessarily thought we were getting. I am sure Mullin's plan will be to switch close to everything on defense which can be great but also demands a lot. Give us 25 minutes a game at the 5 and that should be enough.

Couldn't agree more and my only add to this is stay out of foul trouble.

Maybe Owens transferred because Keita outplayed him in practice last year? It always felt like Ellison left because he knew Simon was better than him.

And not get perimeter happy, hoisting from deep.

Keita does have a smooth looking jumper for someone his size. His three point shooting this season will surprise people. Hopefully he spend most of his time on the court rebounding and providing solid interior defense.

I'm all for Keita expanding his game in 19-20 and 20-21 when on paper we have less horses, but him staying close to the rim and being effective while doing it is a huge part of this coming season.

Absolutely. Keita could become a nightmare for defenses because of his ability to hit the open three and creating space inside the interior. For a good chunk of games we are going to have 5 players on the court who have shown that they can shoot the open trey. It's going to take excellent coaching to teach them to find the open man or cut inside when the interior is left open. Look how well that worked for Villanova last year. The Offense should be really excellent this year.
