My take is that it is not just about the players. They need to be coached up & I've seen nothing over the last three years that makes me optimistic that that is going to happen. We could have 5 all Americans, if they do not play as a team and know the fundamentals of winning basketball, we are not going to have a successful season. I've watched the team make the same mistakes game after game for three years . Sorry for the negative comments but I do not have any faith in this coaching staff.
While CM has been 'learning' coaching OJT, and is still learning x/o's, he's a life-long gym rat, and an NBA HOFer.
He knows 'the game', and the fact that he kept 19 - 22 year old college athletes intact as a cohesive unit through a miserable, confidence-thumping 0-11 BEC losing streak says volumes to me.
My confidence for the upcoming season is high because Chris for the first time since he's become our HC, will have the horses* to win and win big.
(* Mustapha plays.)

I sure hope you are right! However, just because Chris was a great player and knows the game, does not mean he can teach the game to others. As I said, I have seen no evidence that he can do that.

As 80% of the posters on this site have said, this year is a put up or shut up year for the staff and no excuses if they don't make the dance. Having said that, there is a lot of cause for optimism (especially with MH) and I just don't get the point of posts anticipating that the staff will fail. The fact is Clark & Simon have been coached up by someone and I fully expect Trimble to show improvement this year. You can argue that the staff is responsible for the team not being deep enough to absorb Lovett's injury/defection but they deserve a lot of credit for keeping the team engaged and competing despite all the losses. Just my opinion.

With much more depth and a weaker schedule then last year (2 losses), we should only lose 1 ooc game (@ Duke). So 12-1 in the OOC schedule.
I don't want to expect to much of them, so I'll go with 10-8, they gotta go atleast 2 games over 500.

So 22-9, that isn't asking for a miracle right?
As Paultzman avi says: No excuses.

Okay, but the fact he kept the team intact through that horrific streak and rebounded to defeat Duke and Nova and win 3 other BEC teams with an under-manned, exhausted, team gives me confidence that he'll deliver the 'goods' with the horses.

At this point, most of what is posted belongs there.

Any notion that CM can’t Coach is fake News. That needs to be dropped as a critical assessment . And , harping on last Season wears thin . Most Critics were beserk st the 0-11 streak but, few gave credit to Away Win at Villanova or MSG Win vs Duke . Ponds shouldered the duties of 2 players, himself and LoVett. Both Simon and Clark improved over the Season . The rest of our Players were largely Role players , who contributed at times . Now , we have a legit BE Roster , maybe thin in the Front Court but, this team could play very uptempo with a 4 guard and Clark line up and create match up problems for opponents . We will see . Lastly , let’s leave all the rhetoric and bad chatter at other posters and CM and Mitch behind and start the 2018-19 Season with a clean slate on the Court and on redmen.com too. Raise your hand , if that works for you !

The board went crazy with universal joy. What happened after the season was over was people put those 2 wins in context with the overall season including the losing streak. The past is the past. It’s all about this year and locking down recruits for the future. Let’s hope it’s an awesome season !!

Very balanced article, pointing out the added weapons on the roster but also questioning CM’s ability to bring it out of his team—which I think he can and will do.
Odd he didn’t mention Clark’s offense, or add Figueroa as an additional scoring threat.
The one thing most predictors seem to miss—so far—and it’s understandable, because a lot of it is ‘on paper’, is the aggregate scoring threat and athletic ability of Mullin’s collection of guards/wings.
With a little luck, St. John’s should be a fun and exciting team to watch.

Agree Chicago. I think for many of these pundits who don't follow St. john's as closely as we do, Figueroa has likely flown under the radar due to the fact he was a late pickup from JC ranks and was originally signed by a mid major out of HS. Dixon on the other hand they've had a year to hear about and he does have a demonstrated record of Div I success as a freshman, albeit with a mid-major. If Dixon & Figueroa are as good as advertised and MH is cleared to play, watch out because Simon & Clark are going to be every bit as good or better than they were last year and Shamorie has a lot to prove as far as increased efficiency goes.

SLYFOX, everyone was ecstatic beating Nova and Duke. But you have to look at the overall picture, not focus on one part of it. What you're ignoring is the "every dog has his day" part of college hoops. It's not necessarily a sign that the coaching is getting better, it's more law of averages with the Nova game. We flirted with upsetting them practically twice a year but just never finished. We were well overdue on that win. They also didn't have Paschall but to be fair we didn't have LoVett so even trade off IMO. The real evidence of good coaching is good consistent recruiting and being a consistent winner. Not losing 11 games in a row and then getting 2 great ones out of nowhere. It seems like a bunch of people are operating from the standpoint as if Mullin has already proven himself...but he hasn't. Yes he has shown gradual improvement, but he's running out of time. This is the final year we have where he can have a loaded roster with experience and depth and finally prove he can make us a tourney team. We don't have any real major players coming in so far next year and we lose a ton after this season, so if he doesn't make the tourney I wouldn't be shocked if he resigned. We should do very well in OOC, the real question will be can we do well in conference.

Well said Mike! As for those two improbable wins I think we all got stuck in the moment for a while. SlyFox is still stuck there. Without those two wins this board would have been brutal during the off season with a lot of endless repetitive chatter.;)

Who said he is running out of time ? Has our non existent AD said that ? Has the school president said that ? Not to my knowledge. Only you keep repeating that.
As for us loosing a ton this season, possibly, but we only have 1 senior so it is very possible everyone but Clark returns and we add Wright and David C and Heron, who may not be cleared for this season. So on paper we are adding far more than we are guaranteed to lose.
As for Mullin resigning after this season I would be shocked if that occurs as I expect continued improvement, though how much remains to be seen.
Please stop posting and repeating the same crap and go take some anti anxiety medication.
