San Francisco State

Truth be told, this game may have been a blessing in disguise. Div 1 teams have lost to Div 2 teams before in exhibition games. Remember LeMoyne beating Syracuse (and mind you we won this game). We will find out very soon what if anything our team learned from this game.

The cold reality is that St.John's played poorly and allowed mighty SanFrancisco State to look better than they are (see their score on out of bounds play under their basket, their beating our players back on offense, etc.).

This is true but I'm not going Chicken Little over this exh game. Tarik talked about before the game Lavin saying that he was looking forward to using the game for in game learning so assuming that is true there were some good things going on despite the seeming chaos.

Exactly.
When will people realize the game mean absolutely nothing. Yeah I saw things I didn't like but why not try them against total strangers versus practice when your own team knows whats coming. I saw plenty of things I didn't like. Like passing the ball around the perimeter like a hot potato and not using Rysheed and Jamal as they should be in penetrating. It is what it is. We have a dynamite backcourt and last I checked college hoops is a guards game. Sanchez can do a lot. After a year off I was damn pleased to see what he gave. If Karr showed up the game isn't in question.

It's an exhibition so its hard to tell whats real and whats experimental but that was not an encouraging showing.

My take aways from the game.

Branch - played very little, looked lost on defense and missed two easy shots.
Hooper - Shot the ball too quickly and was slow on defense. However his defense was not worse than much of the rest of the team and would have liked to have seen him get some more time.
Gift - played hard. Very slow with limited talent.
Sampson - Horrible. Hope NBA scouts were watching
Harrison - very good on offense. Played with great composure and surely wanted to take more shots but stayed the course. His defense was not great.
Sanchez - Has a lot of skills. Had trouble corralling some rebounds and getting his shot to go through the net. Better days could be ahead.
Pointer - played great defense at times. Was the key to the win in my opinion. He needs to play 30 minutes a game. Should not be playing point guard.
Greene IV - still can't shoot but penetrated a little. Defense was better than others.
Jordan - a ton of talent but did not penetrate as I expected. The team needs him to be a point guard as well as a scorer. Plenty of upside.
Jones - might be needed this year
Obekpa - we missed you.
Lavin - needs to improve in a hurray.

#13 on the other side was much better than Branch or Greene IV

I don't see us winning a non exhibition game this year. If we can only beat a division 2 team by 2 points, how can we possibly beat a division 1 team? I guess we should enjoy our game against Humboldt on Monday. It's our last win until next November.

Jakarr showed up.

Problem is, he was out there by himself trying to showcase his "NBA range".

It was embarrassing.

He hit his first no? That meant the green light got stuck. I'd rather him try it now.

"San Francisco State had a mediocre 16-14 record last year", completely overlooking the fact that we had a breathtaking, no, stunning, 17-14 record last year.
We have a very talented bunch of great individual players that have to be molded into a unit by all those suits on the bench. I think they will. The certainly have
the numbers!
Some of you guys would never survive the team of Mullin, Berry, Wennington, Jackson, Glass ,Moses, Stewart, Shelton Jones, et al who walloped St, Bonaventure by 1, Fordham by 1,
UConn ( who sucked then ) by 3, Villanova by 3, Old Dominion (who?) by 11, Syracuse by 2 in OT in a down year, Villanova by 2, although we owned them with three wins that year,
Boston College by 2, and we even lost by 3 to Niagara who had a "mediocre" record throughout their entire existence save for the Gallagher years and the 60's and 70's.
I know, it probably was the coach who screwed up or maybe the recruiting or perhaps the administration or maybe it was using the redman name. It might have been the
small size of our gym or perhaps one of the priests got a free suit. I don't know. I do know we had the talent to win then and now.
Keep your shirts on. These are a good bunch of young men and it is a long and bumpy season. I think it's one we are going to remember for a long time . Right now it was a win, not in any column but a win
just like our 1 point win over Fordham in 1984; it jus doesn't count for as much. Give these guys a chance.
And, when you get down watching them play, think of those legends beating Fordham and St. Bona by one at the buzzer and then questioning their future.

Andrew, the only points I challenge are abount Pointer playing the point and about Jordan penetrating. Pointer didn't actually run the point in the half court offense. Lavin's system is predicated on several players being able to bring the ball up, rather than slowing down to find the pg to pass it off to. Pointer did bring the ball up on the break. As for Rysheed, he had numerous drives to the basket. It looked almost easy and I wondered why he didn't do it more. He was called for a charge on one drive but was under control on all of the others.

Granted this was an exhibition game, and plenty of first game jitters contributing to lackluster play. However, if they play like this against Wisconsin, there is no way we win.

After this performance, I don;t think anybody is thinking of Wisconsin right now. Nor should they. Coach should get their attention for the next game
Humbolt State???
Meanwhile this guy from Syracuse Carter Williams is tearing up the NBA. Go figure.

We smoked our opponents in both exhibition games last year and barely won by 3 in our opener vs Detroit. There is no rhyme or reason at all. Each game is it's own.

I should preface this by saying I didn't watch or follow the game and only saw the final score but it's an exhibition game, it's really not a big deal. Lavin has been known to try new things in games that actually count so I can only imagine the different stuff he was implementing today. I have complete faith that the team is more than prepared for the start of the season.

Wisconsin took care of business in their exhibition 80-51.

You are certainly right about that. But consider that our offense was listless, ball movement poor, considering an inferior opponent, had difficulty getting easy shots. Not one of our guys looked far superior to theirs, which is scary when you aren't playing a D1 opponent.

@RogRubin: St. John's survives exhibition game. Stud freshman Rysheed Jordan excels. The NYDN story:http://t.co/j9UEQ3617l.
"We're still two or three months away from playing our best basketball but I think we could surprise some people along the way and get some big wins," Lavin said. "By no means am I saying we're going to be terrible for two months. I just know this is a work in progress."

Why is it a work in progress? I am sure Syracuse will be ready for the start of the season.

Sanchez looks very versatile. He was active around the rim, and pushes the pull up the court and had some very nifty passes. Assuming he gets the ball the fall through the rim a little more, he's going to quite valuable for us this year.

Thanks for bringing this up. I noticed last year prior to the NCAA tournament that some absurd number of National Champions and/or Final Four teams scored somewhere in the 70-75 ppg window. I know I have the article somewhere and will find it. I was more concerned with the offense going into tonight and how Lavin juggled the number of players and their minutes and how they synced. Yet I've talked to a few fans who were more up in arms about the defense. Combined the stat I mentioned with the fact the rules are being changed to favor offenses I could really care less about SF State lighting it up from 3 today. I was actually surprised we werent' riddled with foul trouble. Dom of all people. So I'm more concerned with the offense and today we struggled outside of Dee and Sheed really.
