San Francisco State

I'll give you 3 guys, who I consider to be "basketball players" on this current roster.... Harrison, Sanchez, and Jordan. Pointer is also well on his way.

I agree with your 3. Also agree that Dom has a much better sense of the game now, though I think he defers too much on offense and when he doesn't defer he tends to make the wrong shoot/drive decision.

However at this point I think there are only 3 guys on the team who are athletes developing as basketball players - Sampson, Obekpa, Balamou. Obviously Sampson and Obekpa have very high ceilings. Everybody else understands the game at least fairly well, some of them very well.

I think that to some extent that "recruits athletes not basketball players" tag has been used to take Coach off the hook for strategy and management decisions. It's attractive because of how athletic some of his recruits are. But when you really look at the roster, it doesn't hold up quite as well.

Complaining about recruiting..... I won't bother to comment. That gets a laugh.
.

This season will determine whether the players Lavin has recruited are good basketball players or just good athletes. There is a difference.

There is a difference.

I'll ask you this.... Who do you consider, on this team, a good basketball player or just an athlete?

I agree with your 3, for sure. I also agree on Dom. I don't really care how his game is qualified, because I love what he brings and wouldn't want him to change it. Even his mistakes always seem to be of the aggressive variety. That was a clear travel on Saturday, but he was trying to Eurostep and finish hard in transition. I like that.

Branch showed an ability last year to be in this grouping, with great floor sense/ability with the ball in his hands, but he hasn't been the same since the injury @Gtown. I'm hoping Saturday was just one of those games he couldn't get in rhythm, and he'll get back to it starting tonight.

Greene, when used properly, has plus scoring skills, albeit streaky.

I think figuring out what the two of their roles are going to be and getting the most out of them is going to be a key this year, because they are two guys who have skills and value to add.

Thank the basketball gods we have Harrison. We'd be in the toilet without him.

You're basing that on what? An early exhibition? The latter stages of last season?

You can't absolutely state that when there are two "new" capable options on the current squad in Sanchez and Jordan.

Not to mention, if you were to take the best player off any team, then there would be a chance they'd also encounter some trouble.

I can agree with your 3, as athletes developing into basketball players.

I can certainly say with confidence that Harrison, Sanchez, and Jordan understands the game very well. I expect those three to carry the load for the most part. Sanchez may not do it from a scoring standpoint, but he's gonna stuff the stat sheet.

I laughed (and, was kinda irked) when Pointer attempted the Euro step. But in the end, I didn't really have a problem with it. It can be an effective move, if done properly and at the right moment. I love what he brings to the table.

In bold: Totally agree! I'm looking forward to see how they fit into their roles.

My analysis: We played like poo poo on Saturday. It reminded me of last year.

The end.

I'm obviously basing it on the early exhibition. I don't think we would have gone very far with him in the lineup over the final games last season, anyway. He was an uncool bricklayer. He may turn out to be a bricklayer this year, but at least he's a cool bricklayer. Jordan will be outstanding and Sanchez will be very good, but Harrison is the kind of player who can carry a team on his back through the big tournament. Jordan might be able to and Sanchez can't.

I find it interesting that after one crappy exhibition game some folks have already written off Jakar Sampson! The guy you think can carry us in the tourney is not even on the NBA radar yet while Sampson is projected in the 2nd round.
The big question is can coach Lavin get this team to play as a unit on both defense and offense. This year with a full roster it is on the coaches.

So, do you guys think we win easy tonight? Or do the troubles continue?

if we do not win easy Wisconsin will destroy us on Friday.

That could happen, even if we were to win easily tonight.

C'mon, man.... You've been watching sports too long to make such a statement.

I'll chalk this one up to you clowning around. I believe you know better.
