San Francisco State

“@tarik4turner: Although #SJUBB beat SF St, they have work to do. Defensive breakdowns & Turnovers were the issue. Good learning points for Lav & crew.”

Good learning points? The minutes came from 2 players nearing 25 with junior college experience, three juniors, a soph that is really a junior in terms of age and prep school, and a top 15 frosh playing at his natural position. I think we are all getting a little tired of "they are learning". I'm giving them time to gel as a unit. Yes, it's an exhibition game without our center and a future NBA player (perhaps) sleepwalking. But if these guys are still in the learning stage, then Lavin needs to look in the mirror and do more than just adjust his hair and tie.

After this performance, I don;t think anybody is thinking of Wisconsin right now. Nor should they. Coach should get their attention for the next game
Humbolt State???
Meanwhile this guy from Syracuse Carter Williams is tearing up the NBA. Go figure.

Wisconsin took care of business in their exhibition 80-51.

How much do we have to beat Humboldt State by to feel confident that we are ready to play Wisconsin? If we win by like 30 do you think we can beat Wisconsin? Since Wisconsin won their game handily do we even have a chance?

Wisconsin will be a solid favorite. Upsets can always happen.

Definitely after bookies get away from the smell of this one.

Can never say. Michigan opened up with a joke team. So bad I can not even remember who they were but it was embarrassing scheduling them. They should be ashamed of themselves But that said hopefully this team does some great things this yr. If we do not make the dance then it will not be far fetched to question the coach and staffs ability to chose talent and to have them peoduce

Attended the game today...While I think we should have spanked SF State I won't get crazy about the lackluster play...Sheed seems like the real deal...thought Sampson was focused on outside shooting more than usual...disappointed to see Branch sit so much despite starting and being cited, by coach, as the most improved player...I know some noted some missed shots and defensive assignments but there is no way his play only warranted 8 minutes...Realize that coach may want to tinker but Branch needs to be part of the tinkering...and they absolutely need to start incorporating more penetration...SF State's zone was on us most of the game because we mostly passed the ball on the perimeter and didnt get them on their heels

Agree that absence of penetration was frustrating.

They rarely penetrate in a half court set. In transition I always said Branch excelled. Same with Rysheed. 2nd half Rysheed penetrated with ease. Took the contact. Got shots up and/or got the line where he looked good to me. I loved Branch starting with Sheed and Dee but Jamal didn't penetrate. He sat on the top directing the ball around. With those three in you can have 2 threats to drive and kick out to a Dee or the other guard. That could be dangerous.

Anyone have old Nova tapes with all those guards these guys can watch?
I thought Brach penetrated a couple of times in his limited time..missed a few and got yanked...Greene always gets the benefit of the doubt...hope this is not harbinger of more time for Greene...

Branch got yanked because he has the foot speed of a turtle with indigestion. He picked up his third foul because he held a player on the other team because he couldn't keep up with him. He has some sneaky agility that helps him when he gets into the lane, but no matter how you slice it he's just too damn slow.

I don't know what your issue is with Phil. He should clearly be the third guard after Jordan and Harrison and he should get far more time than Branch. He and Dom are both solid contributors.

There's not a lot to say about today's game since it mostly consisted of randomly running guys in and out. Zero time for Bourgault was no surprise, and the makeup of the frontcourt changes when Obekpa returns. Gift should join Bourgault on the bench when that happens. Unless Hooper can hit a shot in an actual game, as opposed to Youtube, he ought to be the third member of that club. Add Balamou and they have a bridge game.

Sanchez does some nice things but needs to adjust to the speed of the game at the D1 level. Sampson took the day off. Harrison, Dom and Phil were really the ones who showed up and played today. No idea why we started a 3-guard lineup. There was just no reason to play Branch with Jordan and Harrison both on the floor.

Can't take too much out of this game, though. Hopefully the staff was just letting some guys play who will get less time as the year goes on.

pretty right on

Why are y'all beating up Lavin for the "good learning points" comment? He didn't say it.... Tarik Turner said it.

Just because one is an upperclassmen doesn't mean games can't be good learning points.

Relax, people.

I think people need to go out for a smoke with some of Humboldt's best crop after the game on monday to relax

The cold reality is that St.John's played poorly and allowed mighty SanFrancisco State to look better than they are (see their score on out of bounds play under their basket, their beating our players back on offense, etc.).

This is true but I'm not going Chicken Little over this exh game. Tarik talked about before the game Lavin saying that he was looking forward to using the game for in game learning so assuming that is true there were some good things going on despite the seeming chaos.

Exactly.
When will people realize the game mean absolutely nothing. Yeah I saw things I didn't like but why not try them against total strangers versus practice when your own team knows whats coming. I saw plenty of things I didn't like. Like passing the ball around the perimeter like a hot potato and not using Rysheed and Jamal as they should be in penetrating. It is what it is. We have a dynamite backcourt and last I checked college hoops is a guards game. Sanchez can do a lot. After a year off I was damn pleased to see what he gave. If Karr showed up the game isn't in question.

Jakarr showed up.

Problem is, he was out there by himself trying to showcase his "NBA range".

It was embarrassing.

He hit his first no? That meant the green light got stuck. I'd rather him try it now.

Jakarr missed his first 3. Made his 2nd. Missed the rest.

Try it now when they had 5 games in Europe to try those things against better competition?

I'm not doom & gloom. I'm just tired of the excuses and justification.

I believe if Obekpa played, we'd win by double digits because SFS did most of their damage in the paint.

That being said, we showed the same issues that we had last year. And Lavin's love affair with PGIV is strange.

And Lavin's love affair with PGIV is strange.

I hope the "love affair" ends on Friday (I feel it will).

Jordan was in foul trouble, and Branch was planted on the bench for whatever reason, so I guess that's why Greene logged quite a few minutes running the point. But I'd rather see Greene play off the ball. I think he'll be more valuable in that position.

I'm no fan of Greene running the point guard position. I think we'll see more of Jordan and Branch manning that spot throughout the season.

Watched the game late and am not as worried as a lot of you guys. That team played a very good game and were able to hit shots consistently. Now are defense was not great what so ever (pick and roll defense was atrocious) so that had a lot to do with it, but overall I think it was them playing well more so than us playing that poorly.

A few take aways:

Harrison played absolutely phenomenal. He shot, drove, rebounded, and defended well IMO. He also hustled like a mad man which is something I hate applauding but it seems like its not always a given with this group.

Rysheed looked great and poised out there. He was a little bashfull out there but once he got comfortable you could really see his potential. Great feel around the basket and a super soft touch on his shot. He had a few really good passes in transition including one where he found dlo for a wide open three which just rimmed out. His defense will get better with time.

Sanches played really well I thought. He reminded me a little bit of Moe with his rebounding, his arms just seemed to keep going. He can pass it well and just needs to get more comfortable finishing around the basket again. I'm sure its been a while for him.

Dom played good and provided really good energy. I like him coming off the bench and doing just that. He still looks very awkward with the ball in his hands though.

Gift really went after rebounds well. Still lacks instincts.

Phil played well for a 4 minute stretch. Other than that he didn't do much. Like moose said he needs to focus on attacking not fading away on jumpers.

Branch didn't show up but I'm not that concerned. Hes a guy that needs to get in a good rhythm.

Jakarr played absolutely terrible IMO. Didn't attack, didn't rebound, Ive always been concerned with is offensive IQ, i think its close to the worst on the team honestly. Hes got talent just doesn't really know what to do with it. Some of the shots he takes are horrendous.

good to see the team come out with a late game win.

that was fugly. Jordan however impressed. Kudos for coach in letting Gift play. He looked terrible in the first half IMHO but helped turn it around at the end. Sampson was out to lunch on this one.
My take:
Harrison: B+
Pointer: B- but also MVP (great overall but negatives on missing several defensive assignments)
Sampson: D
Sanchez: B
Jordan: A-
Gift: D+
Green: C+
Branch: C
Hooper: D

IDK how Harrison doesnt get an A for that performance. He was phenominal.

Personally I think your getting Greene confused with Jamal, and Jamal Confused with Greene. But thats just me, its easy to see who is the better basketball player. Branch had a bad game but dont think he deserved so little minutes.

good to see the team come out with a late game win.

I agree with everything you said. I was getting ready to make a similar post after watching the replay today. Defense was bad yesterday, but given that it was pretty good last year when we didn't press much, I'm fully expecting that to be a strength of ours this year. On offense, I'm okay we us testing our range in a preseason game, thought Jakarr could have done so more within the flow of the offense, and agree with guys who say we should be working on penetrating the defense. Jamal didn't play enough to draw any real conclusions. Rysheed looked good, although not sure how guys have him in the NBA next year off one preseason game. Typical overreaction on this board by some, and a little pot-stirring as well.

I think we'll see more focus tomorrow and taking better care of the ball.

I don't think we're ready to play Wisconsin, and I think we will lose that game. But the thing I noticed is we have such a fast and talented team, But for now, this team isn't ready to play a top 25 team on a neutral site that is much closer to Wisconsin, and I think it will result in about a 15 point loss. And I'm really optimistic about this year, and feel we have the talent to go sweet sixteen in the tournament. But this team needs more time. And I agree with those of you saying we shouldn't need more time. I thought Europes purpose was to get this team gelling early so we could have a shot at Wisconsin. But for whatever reason, we are clearly not ready. A lot of the blame needs to be put on Lavin. His offense that HE put in is so boring and will take Bo Ryan five minutes of film to figure out. One of if not the most athletic team in the nation, and our offense is pass the ball around the perimeter and then chuck a three when we only have one guy who can actually make a three on a consistent basis in a game. It worked for Lavin three years ago when you had natural slashers like Kennedy, Hardy, and Brownlee, because they could beat their man off the dribble, but we don't have that. Jordan can slash, but is tentative right now he will more as the season goes on. My point is when you only have one guy who can penetrate and score, you have to come up with an offense that gets you looks inside with out much slashing. You need a system that puts the ball into the post, you need to set more screens to free up our scorers, and you need to have quicker ball movement. Plain and simply, are defense is not good enough to support a mediocre offense. We need to have a better offense.

Our defense was awful too. We need to fight through screens or somehow improve our screen defense. We can't play man to man either. Things need to change, and they won't in time for the Wisconsin game, and they might not change at all.

If you think we can win with Phil playing a prominent role and taking a lot of shots that's fine. I don't agree.

My main concern after yesterday is weather or not Sanchez and Sampson can play together. I know it's only one game, but it kind of looked like they were getting in each others' way too often.

Sanchez, Jordan, and Pointer all showed great quickness on D. Forced a lot of steals. Interior D will be better once Obekpa comes back. Perimeter D must be better, but quite a few of the 3s they hit were contested (heck, we seemed to do better with #13 when we left him wide open).

Jordan seemed to make it a point, as the new player, to not try and take over the first 25 minutes. Once he realized that was to our determent , the real Jordan busted loose. IMO, we will go only as far as he takes us. With the shots he was getting Harrison yesterday, Jordan will only make him better.

I would say we are not ready to play Wisconsin yet, but you know how this sport works. One week you look ready to beat Louisville, the next week you look like you can't beat the local public high school team, and it goes back and forth over the course of the year. I guess, what I'm saying is, I don't know what the heck's going to happen this year.

UNLV lost to Dixie State (as many have noted)...Funny, they are the Red Storm as well...

12K+ in attendance at that game...we had what appeared to be 1200
