San Francisco State

that was fugly. Jordan however impressed. Kudos for coach in letting Gift play. He looked terrible in the first half IMHO but helped turn it around at the end. Sampson was out to lunch on this one.
My take:
Harrison: B+
Pointer: B- but also MVP (great overall but negatives on missing several defensive assignments)
Sampson: D
Sanchez: B
Jordan: A-
Gift: D+
Green: C+
Branch: C
Hooper: D

Harrison, Pointer are what they are, which I love.
Jordan-thank goodness for his arrival
Greene, Branch are what they are, neither of which I love.
Jakarr gets a pass if he remembers he's not a "3".
Sanchez-need to see more.
Gift is what he is.
Hooper - see Harvard stats. There's a reason Amaker didn't play him.
Obekpa-our only true post presence.
Marco, Felix, CJ-not this year.

First let me say, I didn't see the game. But if I had a talented team in an exhibition game I would work on my weaknesses and not depend on my strengths i.e. stifling defense and ball pressure. On offense I would work on my half court sets and a in-and-out game. Hopefully Lavin was doing that and not worrying about the outcome. For years Georgetown would play and lose to D2 & D3 schools in exhibition but then later on in the season it would pay dividends. Could Coach be that forward thinking?, one could only hope.

This is a good point and what I was trying to console myself with watching this painful exhibition. Most of the game was like passing a kidney stone especially since I could not find any particular thing they seemed to be working on with maybe the exception of letting Gift play.

To quote Doc Gimmler. with tongue in cheek, after a very lucky win " What are you griping about, we had them where we wanted them all the way".
Domonick and Rasheed were supurb. I though Sir Dom was better than ever. D'Angelo is as good as before but has a somewhat more level headed approach to the game, and the new big guy is as good or better than we all had hoped.
It doesn't solve anything but the best team we ever had in '84-'85 eked out wins in more than a half dozen games against very low or middle division 1 teams by one. two or three points and lost to a lower ranked team in a much smaller division with 6 future pros on our team including 2 players of the year and 2 Olympian's! It's basketball. It's post adolescents running around in little more than their underwear, and, at this point in the season, trying their individual very best. Besides that SF State was a really good team who was smokin' today.
We'll get over it, Our guys are really very good with even more potential to be great.

I'd slightly raise Gift's grade, while slightly lowering Sampson's grade.

yeah...I agree. .eff Sampson....I mean Sampson-F

I knew what you meant. LOL

That is the grade I'd give him, as well.

Agree with both Sookjo and Paul. Have to say, Jordan is an outright stud. D'Lo is going to have a great year and I'm really happy for him. Other than that, I'd expect to see more, pre-season or not, out of the team. They did have the advantage of the Europe games and the added practices this allowed them to have. Give Greene's minutes to Hooper and let's see what he can do. Last year, Coach Lav had to expend a lot of energy and time trying to get D'Lo on track. This year Sampson's going to need some attention and maybe an occasional kick in the %#@. Didn't see the first half. Did anyone see any bright spots in Sanchez' game? Saw him miss a lot and put up some questionable shots. Other than that, I'd be curious to know SF State's shooting percentage. For stretches it seemed like they were banging in 90% of their shots. GO REDMEN.

Not what I expected but at least they pulled it out.

I know he was ranked extremely high but I was really impressed by Jordan. He seemed very under control when going to the basket and he seemed to get to the hole anytime he wanted to (I only saw the last 15 minutes). There is no way, from what I saw, that Jordan shouldn't start. He was the best player on the court.

Was excited to see this team today, and I will take it with a grain of salt that they might not have been as amped as SF state for this game- but expected a more energy.

Harrison - welcome back, played well, going to need him to play at a high level if we expect to contend for a top spot in the league. Jordan/Sanchez- impressed, not wowed- but def think these two have the goods to be game changers for us, excited to see them develop. Hooper- took Bourgaults role...just caught passes and passed it right back- missed his one shot. For Hooper to make a diff, for any spot up shooter to make a diff, we are going to need to penetrate... Didn't see any semblance of our guys driving and kicking- hopefully that changes.

Sampson- oh man he didn't look like he wanted to be out there. Think this was a one off and will write his performance up to being an exhibition.

Jones/Marco/Felix didn't see the floor at all...possible redshirts here? Dont know if a player is allowed to see the floor during an exhibition and redshirt as well. Think we def need Jones as another big body.

That SF State was a really good team who was smokin' today.

That SF State team is Division 2.

That "smokin' team (your phrase) was a mediocre 16 wins and 14 losses last season.

If St.John's doesn't play better against Big East schools then this will be a very - very long and disappointing season.

I don't think Marco will get a redshirt. He's just in one of those unfortunate situations where he will toil on the bench all year, and hopefully receive warm applause on senior night.

I think everyone expects Balamou to redshirt, but posters might be torn on Jones. Him not playing is telling, though.

Pretty accurate analysis.

He said they were smokin' TODAY. Last year's record didn't really have any bearing on that.

Not sure what point you are attempting to make.

If you are attempting to say that SanFrancisco State was smokin' today despite the St.John's defense then you are wrong.

The cold reality is that St.John's played poorly and allowed mighty SanFrancisco State to look better than they are (see their score on out of bounds play under their basket, their beating our players back on offense, etc.).

I've been silent while everyone, seemingly, has been very optimistic about this season. I'm really looking forward to it as well, but need to see major improvement to think we'll make the ratings and a run . Horrible foul shooting is rarely mentioned. 3 point defense and a stifling D, which we haven't seen, are keys to a fast break game that we should excel in, but that's not there either. Instead there's still the same no plan half court game. These are the games whereby we're supposed to blow out the opponent, building confidence; not eke out a couple of points victory.

I was there and had to shake my head wondering what we'd learned on our European tour.

Started with three guards but didn't run.

No offensive sets or plays to speak of - reminiscent of a freelance offense à la Jarvis.

Still woefully remiss in defending threes.

Jakarr virtually invisible during the game.

DLo carried us and Rysheed looks capable of doing the same thing.

GG works as hard as anyone out there but sometimes tries too hard and gets in his own way..

Would have had a very tough night against most Big East teams.

Still - an exhibition game.

And lest we forget the most attractive letter in the alphabet - W.

Tmes have changed You can not say because they are Div 2 it is an automatic blowout. For that matter you can not predict 100% it is a win// Still high on the team it was an expo game Lets see how it goes next game.
