I think when it's over we'll end up with Rysheed Jordan and Jarell Martin.
I think it's huge that Jordan's having an official that coincides with the DFTC. I think that's an advantage on atmosphere alone. Alot of former pros will be in attendance and Jordan will see the bonding of the players, most of whom were already friends.
I didn't think we had a chance with him a month ago.
Still a concern that Branch and Greene are only juniors next year, tho. If immediate PT is important, we could have a problem.
Possibly and perhaps not.
No one should be surprised if D-Lo leaves after this season.
If that happens Phil slides over to the 2 spot and there is 20 minutes a game at the pg spot for each of Jamal and Rysheed.
Only problem is Phil has no reliable outside shot. Jamal slides to the 2 as a better shooter.
Sometimes we get caught up in "labels" - I'm not sure coach Lavin really cares. It's 15 years later, and I still don't know if Baron Davis was athe PG and Earl Watson the SG, or Vice-Versa, for the '98 and '99 Lavin teams. Baron led in assists one year, Earl in assists the other. Neither had particularly good outside shots (Baron shot 31 and 34% on 3s his two years, Earl shot 32% both years)....By the way, the year before that, starting SG Toby Bailey led the team in assists with 156 from the wing. That following year, the first of the Baron/Earl backcourt, Bailey moved to SF...and finished 2nd to Baron in assists with 135. Steve will run the offense thru whoever runs it best. That '98 season was Lavin's 2md straight "what-if" year - three 100 plus assist guys in the starting lineup, All five starters future NBA players, and stopped at the Sweet 16 - center Jelani McCoy got suspended for weed, and in the tourney's 2nd game, Baron tore his ACL - the year before it was McCoy suffering a fractured sternum in the Sweet 16 game that ended their run at the Elite 8. Hence, when I post predictions it's always qualified "barring catastrophe". ;(
Thank you. I think sometimes people want to identify a player as a pure point guard or pure shooting guard and forget the fact that you can blur roles on the court. Just a couple of years ago, Villanova had a great backcourt with Randy Foye and Kyle Lowry. And I don't think anybody would label either of those players as a pure point guard. My feeling is that if a player can play, the coaches will find a spot on the court for him. Understandably, you need to balance your lineup with distributors, shooters, slashers, and rebounders. But bringing in a top notch player like Jordan is a win-win and I don't think he'll have to worry about finding minutes. If he is as good as advertised, Lavin will get him out on the court and make the necessary adjustments.
Either way, let's enjoy the players that are currently on the SJU roster. In terms of pure talent, this current group has to be the best backcourt that they've had in years. Harrison, Greene, and Branch are going to be a formidable trio for the Red Storm. Throw in contributions from Bourgault and Balamou and SJU is going to be set.
