Rutgers Exhibition

Alleyne was a major contributor on a National Championship team. Not worried about him at all.
I didn't say I was worried about him. I was merely pointing out that he didn't shoot it very well yesterday and over his career has never shot it well so, despite his big shots last night, calling him a shotmaker night be a little optimistic. I also said that a) it was only a scrimmage and b) he'll never take 17 shots in a game ever again because that's not what he's here for, so no biggie either way. I'm very glad to have him. His quotes after yesterdays game showed leadership and maturity, two things this team has sorely lacked over the years.

On a separate note, I know its probably a little naive in this day and age to want to actually like the kids that play on your school's team; as long as they can play, why should I care if they're good people? But between Wilcher and Ledlum and Dingle and now Alleyne, I just like these kids. Taylor seems like that one loveable goofball every team needs to keep it light. Brady, same thing. It makes it so much easier to root for them. And I am.

Just a few unsolicited thoughts.

First...I thought the crowd was disappointing. For 20 bucks, my wife and I got seats on the floor in a game against a good opponent. For 10 dollars...the price of a beer in Manhattan...you got into the building. There are elite fans on this site who try to get to every game and I'll admit I'm not one of them...but come on. Do we deserve Pitino?

Rutgers is a good team. They're well coached and they have some studs. I'd be shocked if they didn't make the NCAA's in March.

I was elated by the first half. We were men against boys. In the second half, we looked like we blew our load and were looking for a cigarette. Terrible. Many posters here broke down assessments of players better than I could, so I'll leave it at that.

Pitino said, post game, that this kind of win was better than a 30 point blowout. They gave up a big lead...had a buzzer beater...then put Rutgers away in the second OT. Onions.

OK...we're not top 25 yet...but I see it coming.
I see it coming also but have even higher hopes
.
Some players just have to be refined more especially early
in the season.

Case in point,. Last year we had a recruit from Purdue named
Aaron Wheeler . Early in the season. We had lost confidence in him,
to put it mildly.

Second half of the season, he was a WOW ! Go to guy
and a board banger, even without having CRP.

Our coach will squeeze the best out of someone's potential
, so stay cool, keep the faith and enjoy.

In games like this, I would like to see SJU give tickets away to area schools, CYO teams, rather than play yo a house 3/4 full.
They have done this on several occasions. This was a fundraiser and they should not have had to do that when it was $10 per ticket.

Most of the complaints on the lack of attendance is more geared at the students not the non-students.

Saying Alleyne never shot it well over his career is objectively false. He’s a career 37.0% 3 pt shooter on 3.9 attempts per game and 81.6% FT shooter. As a soph at Va Tech he shot 40.8% from three on 4.7 attempts per game, including the game-winning ACC championship three.

His overall FG % isn’t great because he has a very poor handle for his size. He’s a 2-3 dribble guy which is far less than ideal for a 6’4 kid.

The better the guards setting him up are at getting into the lane and kicking the better he is. His soph year they had a Tasmanian devil at PG and his 40.8% reflected that.

Jenkins and Dingle are dribble-heavy guards and they should all complement each other very nicely. Maybe Ledlum, Luis, and Taylor can kick it to him as well when they are at the 4. He’s a 3 and d guy. He can effectively guard 1-3 and more than hold his own against stretch 4s like he did with David Jones last year against us.

I agree with you that he likely never sees 17 shots in a game again. However, he hopefully doesn’t have to play with only one facilitator again either.

As mentioned by several, the attendance was to but it kindly “disappointing”. I had a feeling it would be by the way they kept pushing it with advertisements. It is more than bothersome that we can't get students to role themselves from their dorms on campus or housing near it for a 2 PM charity game ushering in a new era of basketball. I guess with them the night before was all about 2Chainz.

Maybe it is about the fact our brand has been irrelevant for years that we have not really built up a fan base in that age range except for those whose parents are diehards. The two years that my daughter was there before she transferred, she had student season tickets but could not get her roommates or other friends to go and that problem seems to continue. You would think they would want to be part of starting a new tradition and get things going but no.

Season tickets and mini plans sales are up due to people like most of us on this site, people who remembered the heydays, are graduates and or grew up as fans whether they attended the school or not. This is the perfect time to cultivate this group of students and those who are coming after them but the signs yesterday in this department was not there.

Back when I was a student, the students didn’t pack games at Alumni but then there were no dorms or student section which we have at CA. The Students did come out en masse for games at the Garden. We shall see.
I fall into the category people who remembered the heydays! this is my favorite time of year New Hope

as mentioned. It’s more about the students coming out of their dorms. always thought with how many thousands of students Carnesecca arena could not have a crowd

Hitting 3’s when the game is on the line trumps shooting percentage. The two he made in each OT were clearly game changers.
Take enough threes, some are bound to go in. I agree he hit the big shot but he’s not sharpshooter some people make him out to be.

Sorry, I had my Alleyne big moments mixed up.

Here is Alleyne hitting a game-tying 3 against Florida in the NCAA tournament to send it to OT:

His junior year his Va Tech team won the ACC tournament by blowing out UNC and Duke the last two games in Brooklyn. He started all 36 games and averaged 31.1 mpg that year.

A number of UConn fans on the fan site “Boneyard”, were disappointed when Alleyne entered the transfer portal.

I believe over 4,500 tickets were sold and if another 600 or so actually attended, it would have been packed.
However, the reality is that the student demographics have changed since many of us attended. Female students outnumber male students and tend to attend fewer games.
We now have a large Asian and South Asian population and fewer Irish and Italian-American kids that were more into basketball. Those students need to be targeted to attend games and convert them to fans. The pan-hellenic groups need to be more involved as they were years ago. I do agree a 2 pm start time for a non-televised game was a head-scracther and finally, I was surprised that a larger Rutgers fans following was not present.

All excuses for a crappy fan base. I think of it this way, if 98 year old Coach Carnesecca shows up, which he now does only 2 or 3 times a season, it's a big deal. If you are within 75 miles of the game instead of complaining that its not on tv, if you care enough, pay TEN BUCKS and usher in the Pitino era by showing up.

What is apples and oranges is there is enough interest in Iowa in a woman's exhibition game to sell 56000 tickets AND have it on TV. Why on earth would a sponsor pay for ad time for an sju mens game when only 3000 fans bother to show up for a charity game? Sju doesn't have its own sports network. Instead of blaming Cragg why not call Fox Sports and express your dissatisfaction. All proceeds went to pediatric cancer research so sju already underwrote the cost of security, cleaning, ushers, etc. You can still make a donation if you wish.

As far as our remote or handicapped fans, I wish the game was televised. For local fans, for decades local teams blacked out local telecasts and the Mets and Yankees are mostly subscription based. Maybe we should do that too.
Those of us in Florida could and would probably pay to subscribe to something if it were available.

He shot 39% from 3 in his three year stint at Virginia Tech. I’ll take that.
