Rutgers Exhibition

I heard from St. John's this a.m. regarding the lack of a tv broadcast of Saturday's (terrific) exhibition between SJU and Rutgers.

I do think that most of you unable to attend were not too upset about it but the athletic department wanted it clarified here and on X.

Their response:

Will you please tell your friends the following about the exhibition game and streaming it:

As you know there was no stream. Here’s why. This was originally scheduled as a closed scrimmage with no coverage allowed. Both coaches wanted to keep that principle for privacy purposes of the game and simply focus on raising money for pediatric cancer research. Obviously we got a great game too! Hope that helps explain as it had nothing to do with saving money and in fact we had MSG Network lined up to help if the coaches of both programs wanted coverage.

My take, and Kranmars knows how I feel. :)

We definitely have the most responsive and likely most capable AD in my nearly 50 years of association with St. John's. At the very least he approaches the venerable late Coach Kaiser. He is visible and present, and responds to the smallest requests from fans and alums. Yes, we are all passionate about our men's basketball team, and sometimes we get carried away with rants - sometimes justified, sometimes without basis. But it's nice that the AD cares enough to respond to rants with intelligent reasoned information.

Now let's have a great season, fill our home court arenas, and see March basketball!

Shared this on twitter, figured I would here as well.

Another thought, albeit pretty obvious about the scrimmage over the weekend: playing a power 6 conference team as an exhibition opponent, local or not should be mandatory for St. John's.

It was so refreshing to see what that game turned into. And yes, both coaches echoed similar thoughts that they learned so much about their own teams because of how competitive the game turned out to be plus the extra two overtimes. In the past, St. John's has had exhibition match ups again Adelphi, Southern New Hampshire, Baruch, Queens College, and you really don't get to learn much from that, it's just to shake the rust off an play against another opponent.

There's so much more value in a highly competitive game. Having a game that feels like a Big East Tournament tilt in October was fantastic, for everyone involved, coaches, players, fans. So yes there is a final exhibition against Pace, and I certainly understand the need and point behind a game against that tier of an opponent, but having one against a high end opponent as well, should be the formula going forward.

Someone also replied saying SJU has played better teams in secret scrimmages in the past, to which I replied "I think the "non-secret" aspect of it, having fans in the crowd, the noise, is vital. I'm 100% sure if this Rutgers game was a closed door scrimmage like originally planned, the game doesn't go into 2 OTs, and the result/lessons learned is/are very different."

This game checked a lot of boxes, first and foremost raising $ for pediatric cancer research, and secondly telling the coaches, players and fans a lot about what they have in front of them. Kudos to the school, Coach Pikell and Coach Pitino for making this happen and making sure the doors were open for this game and it wasn't kept a secret.

Totally agree with all points. We’ve had our share of closed scrimmages as well, just not against P6 teams.

10/31/22 v Rhode Island
10/21/18 v Rhode Island
10/28/17 v Hofstra

My last word on the subject but very curious, Cragg issues a public proclamation saying no streaming to increase attendance but the real reason according to the athletic department is Pitino and Pikiell didn’t want it available? And isn’t Cragg part of the “athletic department”? Then why did Pace get lumped in with the original announcement regarding attendance. Why didn’t Cragg just say the coaches didn’t want to make it available in the first place?

My take: Who's raising money for what at the Pace game? In other words, this is a fake excuse.

Cragg should have said, "How about getting off your lazy asses and get to the game. We have potential recruits (plus Glover) in the building. What message are you sending to them? They won't all come for the most NIL money. BTW, I spoke to a number of non ST JOHN'S fans at the game. One couple told me they went to Kentucky and were Pitino fans. There were plenty of Rutgers fans on hand as well.

Why would our AD say to the public that our head coach didn't want something that would be popular with fans?

I’ll have you know that competing against the Pace Setters is not worthy of scorn .

The Setters are loaded with future CPA’s and many of them will be playing Forward , Center and Guard .

You have to give them Credit ( as opposed ) to Debit for such a catchy Team Nickname.

It’s a very good Business School and lovely Campus in Plesantville , NY in Westchester .

My daughter graduated with her Accounting Degree and off to a big Accounting firm .

Alleyne was a major contributor on a National Championship team. Not worried about him at all.

Alleyne is experienced by he wasn't a major contributor last year. Semantics maybe, but he played 17 min per game last year and averaged under 6 points, then was recruited over for this year leading to his desire to transfer. He will be a contributor on this team as well and I'm glad to have him. If he can get back to his soph year stats at Va Tech that would be great but he's not going to play that number of minutes unless there are a lot of injuries. And every year he's shot lower from the field than one might like with a peak of 39% FWIW.

Pleasentville is their secondary campus (although they've been expanding more out to there, apparently).

Their main campus (where the basketball team plays), is in lower Manhattan, near Wall Street and the Financial District.

Very fair assessment IMO. Yes he hit a clutch shot but he's not going to be the go to guy.

Not a go to guy, a 3 and D bench guy, which is very valuable. Unless Cruz Davis gets more minutes there are 4 guys who will dominate the time at the 1 and 2 so there's minutes to go around.

I very much like your take. Me personally, I really didn’t care if it was streamed or not and that is how I felt after purchasing the ticket only to have a conflict later that had me thinking I was not going to catch any of it.

Rutgers had a nice somewhat loud contingent at the game (I knew a few who are connected to the program that were there).

There will be plenty of games that actually count to see either live in person or through various media.

I am really happy that we have Alleyne on our roster. He was valuable to UCONN last season primarily because of his defense and work ethic. I wouldn't be concerned about the number of shots he took or made in the Rutgers scrimmage. He is a good 3 point shooter and has shot from 3 at 37 percent at high majors over four seasons. All shooters as we have seen recently from D'Angelo to Shamorie to Julian are streaky. Pitino knows his value and he will be used accordingly.

Without thinking I would say that a great 3 point shooter would hit 45%. There aren't too many of those so 37% = 55.5% from 2 (with less ft opportunities). Definitely good enough to be called good. (How's that for a limited vocabulary assessment)

Funky left handed release though, no?
