Rutgers Exhibition

I have a close relative who is just about as big a diehard uconn fan* as could possibly be (his biggest fault). He is the smartest basketball fan I know, and when we got Alleyne, he said "You guys got a really good one, and big reason we won the NCAA Tournament."

Good enough for me.

* He does root for us when not playing uconn

Diehard UConn fan, and the smartest basketball fan you know?Sorry, but that is impossible.

As for Alleyne , Pitino says “ he’s the best defensive player we have in the Backcourt and has the ability to make clutch shots .”

That should be enough for the nay sayers .

He wasn’t coveted by Pitino to be a play maker and for a shooter who is a good defensive player , assists should be the last thing we should impose on him .

If you recall , he was one of the very first players Pitino signed last Spring . It wasn’t a accident .

I believe over 4,500 tickets were sold and if another 600 or so actually attended, it would have been packed.
However, the reality is that the student demographics have changed since many of us attended. Female students outnumber male students and tend to attend fewer games.
We now have a large Asian and South Asian population and fewer Irish and Italian-American kids that were more into basketball. Those students need to be targeted to attend games and convert them to fans. The pan-hellenic groups need to be more involved as they were years ago. I do agree a 2 pm start time for a non-televised game was a head-scracther and finally, I was surprised that a larger Rutgers fans following was not present.
This. The student population is way different than many in US & is arguably most diverse in nation. Not saying right or wrong just that it’s obviously big factor. I used to walk to class for 100 yards without even hearing English. You have many international students from all over globe. It’s also a commuter school. Regardless though, win and they will come. Especially MSG.

Saying Alleyne never shot it well over his career is objectively false. He’s a career 37.0% 3 pt shooter on 3.9 attempts per game and 81.6% FT shooter. As a soph at Va Tech he shot 40.8% from three on 4.7 attempts per game, including the game-winning ACC championship three.

His overall FG % isn’t great because he has a very poor handle for his size. He’s a 2-3 dribble guy which is far less than ideal for a 6’4 kid.

The better the guards setting him up are at getting into the lane and kicking the better he is. His soph year they had a Tasmanian devil at PG and his 40.8% reflected that.

Jenkins and Dingle are dribble-heavy guards and they should all complement each other very nicely. Maybe Ledlum, Luis, and Taylor can kick it to him as well when they are at the 4. He’s a 3 and d guy. He can effectively guard 1-3 and more than hold his own against stretch 4s like he did with David Jones last year against us.

I agree with you that he likely never sees 17 shots in a game again. However, he hopefully doesn’t have to play with only one facilitator again either.

And, to add to your point, Rutgers defense and, in particular, their closeouts and ability to make us play east-west shouldn’t be underestimated. We had to work hard for our shots.

In games like this, I would like to see SJU give tickets away to area schools, CYO teams, rather than play yo a house 3/4 full.
I actually suggested this but was rightfully told it was a charity event. A CYO family of 4 could see two very good college teams for $40 bucks. Way less than a movie.

I think right now we are about 63% diverse and about 40% Catholic. I think those numbers are pretty consistent at urban based Catholic universities.

I'll say this about our diversity: At sju men's basketball games there are frequently small mobs of students seated together near me. Often the groups of friends are mini u.n.'s - black, white, latino, asian - and clearly appear to be great friends. I'd say right now it's one of the great things about St. John's - the racial and ethnic diversity where strong friendships are forged.

Not negating your experiences which are authentically your own. Just saying we are no different than most universities today.

Please disown him. 😜

I led at the 5:45 mark of the second half during the timeout as I had another commitment (my wife, daughter and I had tickets for Hamilton and had plans for either dinner or drinks before the show).

I read another post saying Daniss has his pocket picked several times and might have problems against guards like Posh. Having missed the end of regulation and the OTs, I have no comment on hat portion but I only recall him getting stripped once. They pressured, double teamed, and hedged against him the entire game and I thought he looked good. I think he did tire late and the offense struggled in the second half bit overall, he will be more than fine. Shooting wise, he had about three heaves all in the second half from the three to avoid a shot clock violation and there was another turnover when he and Brady where not on the same page and the ball went out of bounds. Rutgers used a Nolan Richardson strategy on Daniss (“Cut off the head and the rest of the body will die” was the strategy he used against us and David Cain in the Tourney).

I think Alleyne was 0-4 on 3 pointers before he hit his first one (a nice fluid looking step back) and then missed his next two by my count before I left.

Wilcher played with Daniss at the same time most of the time he was on the court with Daniss running the show before Wilcher got his chance.

Taylor’s handle surprised me. There were several times I thought he would get stripped and he didn’. Helped set up his teammates.

As I mentioned in a post after watching practice a week ago, Drissa is much improved. Played both the 4 and 5 yesterday.

Ayo hit his first shot but missed the rest.
I don’t see Daniss having any problems with Posh or small guards. He is solid. He had one take away after being the sole ball handler for 43 minutes under constant pressure. He needs a guy to relieve him at times but don’t lose sleep over his handle. And guess how many lay ups he had blocked at the rim…..none. How refreshing!

I fall into the category people who remembered the heydays! this is my favorite time of year New Hope

as mentioned. It’s more about the students coming out of their dorms. always thought with how many thousands of students Carnesecca arena could not have a crowd
We only have 3500 students living on campus. FYI, we must have 60-65 kids on cheer squad and dance team this year! They were in mid season form!

From what I can see on Ticketmaster tickets are selling great. This was an exhibition game that was setup late. We were away and I know our trip was booked before this game was announced.

But we listened to Dave on the trip home today so it’s like we went!
Hey that’s super awesome to hear! Thank you so much that means a lot.

56% of entire student body is female. If it’s the same % for on campus students, 1540 males live on campus. You can’t fill the arena with those numbers. More research needed for other demographics this post mentioned but all valid points. It’s clear we can’t blame on campus kids for bad attendance. No more finger pointing. It’s us.

There was no mini U.N. at this game. It was African-American, White and some Latinos.
I saw a handful of Asians and certainly no South Asians. Why aren't the frats and sororities more involved?
There were plenty of students roaming the campus but seemingly oblivious to this historic charity event in their backyard.
I'll chalk it up to it being an early Saturday game but this event should have sold out within days of its announcement based on all Pitino publicity alone.
Scheduling the "rapper" event the day before this game was also an attendance killer.

Those of us in Florida could and would probably pay to subscribe to something if it were available.
Let’s see—200 Florida alums paying 20 bucks each for streaming one game equals 4000 in gross revenue at charity game less streaming costs means less money for charity? Charity subsidizing Florida alums. Cragg gets a lot of criticism but life is not that simple guys.

Yeah, because I am sure people willing to pay would only be those 200 alums in Florida. Besides it is called investing in the future……
Just look at this thread, how much of the diehards posting here is about the actual game, the 50 minutes on the court? Not much because very few saw it; no real buzz from the most zealot of fans, no excitement about what would have probably went down as an “exhibition classic”! The very exciting “beginning of a new era.”
No doubt in my mind, Pitino will leave this in the rear view mirror in the long run but that doesn’t change the fact that opportunity LOST by more “mom and pop” penny wise and dollar foolish thinking.
