Rick’s Targets

im not too concerned yet either. The timeline is just interesting. 2 weeks ago I expressed some impatience and was told "just wait until next week". That was last week, it came and went. Then we heard some rumblings of "wait till Easter, a lot of kids are gonna pop on Easter"... nope. Then we were told 48 hours we should have multiple commits. That was around 48 hours ago right???

I am not down on Pitino right now. I am down on the people who are acting like they have sources. It is becoming abundantly clear a lot of people don't and are just waiting like the rest of us

“One thing I'm hearing as St. John's struggles in recruiting is this is just a reminder of what an uphill climb it is, Hall of Fame coach or not, to get players to Queens. I fully expect this to turn soon, and I'm not talking about Walter Clayton, who is very unlikely to come, but this is a really tough job and Rick Pitino and Co. are learning that.”

Well, not exactly reassuring...

There is a stack of inspiration cards in my kitchen and the one on top to read this week says:

Be positive patient persistent -
BE POSITIVE PATIENT PERSISTENT

imo RP knows and practices this!

I thought these words were poignant & timely.

Sounds like they're trying to lower expectations for the fan base

Guys, take a step back from the ledge. I know who I would not want in the foxhole next to me.

I interpreted Zach’s comment as to say Pitino may not be able to bring in his normally high level players right away.

None of the coaches who came in did that. Even Lavin had the talented recruiting class his second year.

Pitino will win games, and get us in the NCAA Tournament. Then I really believe the recruiting will pick up immeasurably.

2011 - Harkless, Pointer, Harrison, Garret - All top 100
2012 - Branch, Obekpa, Sampson
2013 - Jordan
2016 - Ponds, Lovett
2018 - Herron
2022 - Storr, Curbelo
I would say the better language was MA and CM had trouble getting top 100 talent here. Admittedly, MA pulled a couple of gems in Champagnie and Posh (who had been top 100 but dropped because of an injury his senior year - if I remember correctly).
I think RP is as charasmatic as Lavin was and that he will be able to bring in talent.

I really thought Pitino might be able to overcome the built in challenges in recruiting to Queens especially with enhanced NIL opportunities with Repole's money behind him. Pitino and Cooley were hired at the same time and Cooley has tapped the portal for three players already. It just shows how hard it is to win the recruiting game at St John's and why CMA failed to get it done here.

I still think that the plan was to blow up the roster and bring the expectations down which would give Pitino and the administration time to get facility upgrades in progress and fan attendance back up to respectable levels so that he has something to sell recruits, especially rising sophomores and juniors Pitino can build a relationship with going forward. Factor in the NIL money Repole and others bring to the table and there could (and should) be a formula for success.

This isn't an easy job and I think the administration has finally got its head out of its arse and is committed to putting the money into the long overdue upgrades needed to put St John's on better footing in relation to other programs who are big time or at least aspire to be.

Who says it was leaked? All he wrote is he’s “hearing.” I’ve been a source for the Post twice. I seriously doubt Rick Pitino or Mas are saying that at this point.
What you said.

Also, there is a difference between "talent" and "fit". Fans judge "talent" based on HS rankings, fair or not. We get excited by the number of stars next to a kid because we typically do not know much more than that. And in a year or two, those "rankings" are out the window, and it becomes about what a kid has done in college. Which is why portal-mania is such a thing. Lavin recruited awesome off-the-bat, and while both Mullin and Anderson nabbed some highly-rated kids, some of those were available for a reason despite their talent (see Lovett, Curbello, etc).

Ultimately, R-E-L-A-X. I get the frustration, but what matter is not the "timing", but what the roster looks like come fall. However it is formed. Based on his profile, I would have loved to get Clayton. But we have no clue about the inner-workings on all of this, and no doubt there are players who have yet to enter the portal or who might enter the portal who the staff is in contact with.

All I know is that because we have Pitino, none of this concerns me. Because it is Pitino.

Also BS that anyone is struggling. It’s been what, three weeks? Maybe four?
Ok, deni

Lavin’s stellar recruiting class was his first full year. He only had one scholarship to fill his fist year and he added one of the top HS players in California..

In any event, recruiting was a totally different game when Lavin was coach. The fact of the matter is we are struggling right now and there’s no sugar coating it.

A little too early for me to say we are struggling. Just like the day we made this hire I am in wait and see mode.

So far this is what is going on from my perspective:

1) The old roster was cleared out and fans like me were disappointed that players we really rooted for are now gone.
2) The new roster will be built and no one knows yet what that will look like.
3) Regardless of the names and the rankings of the players we get, there is a belief that Rick Pitino (more than our previous coaches) will be successful at coaching up his type of players and molding them into a winning unit.
4) For me I will say we are struggling when we are actually playing games and performing badly. Anything else is pretty much speculation and impatience IMHO.

Lavin’s first year were the holdovers. His second year brought in the big class.

In your eyes, we are struggling. I see it differently. And I am hardly a rose colored glasses king of person.

I am just not going to post “be patient” over and over, unlike you who is posting multiple times daily that the sky is falling.

You don’t like Pitino. Check.
Pitino has lost it. Check.
We are struggling. Check.
We will be the first team to have a three man roster. Check.
We will be lucky to have a MAAC level backcourt. Check.

I am probably missing some things, but I pretty much have encapsulated your posts.

And with Clayton he chose to be near his roots and who knows if the people he loves are having money or health issues or loneliness - and he & his relatives just want to live closer by.
Really not our business.

We’re losing out on a stud pg with no top targets in sight after dismantling a talented roster. That’s the concern.
Boo, c’mon . Talented ? It was a 8 th place BE team that had 5 wins over Butler , DePaul, G’Town . Wins against UCONN , PC? Hey , it’s the BE , nobody goes unbeaten . They played rag tag , ugly BB and they did it for all 4 years thatCMA Coached . Blame him but , he recruited all those plAyers . And, it don’t see the Portal lighting up with our former players . None of them have landed yet . Other than Storr , most of them will wind up at mid tier schools . Posh , if he doesn’t come back , which is likely a miracle , might go to a SH or , other upper league team . Or , who knows ?
