Rick’s Targets

“One thing I'm hearing as St. John's struggles in recruiting is this is just a reminder of what an uphill climb it is, Hall of Fame coach or not, to get players to Queens. I fully expect this to turn soon, and I'm not talking about Walter Clayton, who is very unlikely to come, but this is a really tough job and Rick Pitino and Co. are learning that.”
Where did Zach say that?

there is some alternate outlet where people get Zach reports. And somehow get it before twitter? Idk but I have seen a few mention it
Post+. It's a pay service, but Zach lets the SJU Fan Facebook group copy his tweets, which I guess he can hide, only for Post+ users.

See, that is what I was worried about right there. Rick will adjust and whoever he gets they will be well coached. But yes cutting everyone loose was a mistake! He thought I can do better, I am Rick Pitino. But the suck of ST John’s seems to be more powerful than a HOF coach.
We will be as good as we possibly can be but first year May be rough.

You might be right, but it’s way too early to say that.

Let me say , I have full confidence that Pitino will put a good team on the Court in November and possibly great teams in 2024 and after .
I’m a former NYorker and still have family on Long Island and upstate . But , if anyone thinks recruiting todays players to a NY City School is going to be easy , even if you are Rick Pitino , they are somewhat mistaken .
For a Florida native player like Clayton, would you rather Winter on a beautiful Campus in Gainesville or , play BB with Snow, Cold , etc in Jamaica , NY ? Plus , if reports are true , Clayton has family issues close to home to deal with .
NYC is not a dream location for a 18 year old kid or , a 20 year old Portal player that can go to many of these big State Universities with iconic Campus atmosphere .

We also , despite Pitino, have to deal with a 20 year f drought in BB . Most of these players only know of St John’s as a losing program .

Yes , Rick will get it done but , it’s not a cake walk . He’s got a lot to offer Players but , there are a lot of good Coaches out there at good schools too .

Now that the roster has been intentionally descimated, our former recruits turned away and now and our top transfer target embarrassed us, I guess we're looking at the Yankumba Sima's and Ron Mvoicas of the world.

Pitino is my favorite bball coach of all time.

But this has looked like a hot mess.

Listen, will he get a full roster? Of course.
Will it be a roster everyone thought? No
Will it be better on paper than what we had ?probably not
The question is will it be the roster that Pitino initially thought he would have? Now I am going to say no just based off Clayton.

So because of the uncertainty of the last 2 questions, no matter what it was a miscalculation.

So New Rock is easier to recruit to then Queens?

Getting this thread back on track, has Coach Pitino landed any transfers yet officially? Outside of Joel Soriano who will be the other 4 starters next season ?

I feel like in the past our coaches would just pick up any player and if the were ranked then this board would be happy. I think RP is going to bring in players that will play well together and be a cohesive group. I am looking forward to players valuing the ball, making the right pass and shooting well. I think that’s what we will have in store for us.

I really thought Pitino might be able to overcome the built in challenges in recruiting to Queens especially with enhanced NIL opportunities with Repole's money behind him. Pitino and Cooley were hired at the same time and Cooley has tapped the portal for three players already. It just shows how hard it is to win the recruiting game at St John's and why CMA failed to get it done here.

I still think that the plan was to blow up the roster and bring the expectations down which would give Pitino and the administration time to get facility upgrades in progress and fan attendance back up to respectable levels so that he has something to sell recruits, especially rising sophomores and juniors Pitino can build a relationship with going forward. Factor in the NIL money Repole and others bring to the table and there could (and should) be a formula for success.

This isn't an easy job and I think the administration has finally got its head out of its arse and is committed to putting the money into the long overdue upgrades needed to put St John's on better footing in relation to other programs who are big time or at least aspire to be.
Pitino is 70 years old. He’s not going to waste a year to rebuild. I predict St. John’s will be in be in the NCAA next season.

I slept with between 25 and 30 women in my time. If I had a big ego I'd say there are plenty of 20 and 30 something hotties lined up ready and willing to have a good time with me any day now.. The reality is those days are long gone. Then, again, I don't have Rick's ego.

Anyone who follows college basketball...and top professionals...will tell you there's no one in America who can out coach Rick. He's the best in the business. He won't forget how to coach. He won't forget how to be driven. He'll always be relentless.

The problem is his ego got out of hand. No one, anywhere, in any business, would get rid of virtually every one of their employees with no one waiting in the wings to replace them. Rick made a huge mistake. He's not infallible as many posters who worship at his feet believe. Rick will bring in good players...not great players...and he'll work them to a point where he'll probably make the dance next season. Virtually all of you know he could have done it with our guys. Instead, he hurt them and he rattled his new fan base. He doesn't realize young, hot ball players aren't lining up for him, anymore. Ships sail. You have to learn your limitations.

Right now, swallow your pride and reach out to our guys and humbly ask them to return.

I don’t believe this. Norm, Lavin, Mullin and Anderson all got some talented players here. Hell, Lavin might have gotten Norm’s players to the Sweet 16 if DJ Kennedy didn’t get hurt. Then Lavin himself recruited D-Lo, Dom, Sampson all top 100 players. Mullin had guys like Ponds, Heron, Figueroa etc. Anderson got Storr and Gardner who were Top 100 recruits, Soriano, Curbelo and Jones were top transfers. There are quality players that I obviously did not mention because I’m not going to name them all, but getting talent here was never the problem to me , it was the coaching and the ability to maximize the talent that we had. Lavin having his personal issues hurt tremendously also. But, I can’t believe that it’s that hard to get some talent here.
